After witnessing clashes with the urban poor and workers on one side and the government militia on the other side that took place in France in 1832, Zygmunt Krasinski wrote this profoundly pessimistic play about Poland's future in which he foresaw strife between the nobles and the polish working classes.

This play enjoyed a great deal of popularity amongst right-wing poles who lived under the Communist regime imposed on their country at the end of World War II. In today's Poland which enjoys demo

A portrayal of the apocalypse, which for the author are all the 19th century revolutions in Europe. He has put an equality sign between Dante's Inferno and the camps of the revolutionaries, which he obviously criticizes and detests. He takes the side of the religious aristocracy, which makes this book an obvious propaganda, which is what I didn't like about it; but overall it shows an interesting view on the changes in society and therefore it is worth reading.

Count Napoleon Stanisław Adam Ludwig Zygmunt Krasiński (Paris, France, 19 February 1812 – 23 February 1859, Paris, France), a Polish count, is traditionally ranked with Mickiewicz and Słowacki as one of Poland's Three National Bards — the trio of great Romantic poets who influenced national consciousness during the period of Poland's political bondage.
