Its a Christian romance with a good story. It kept me wanting to see what happens next. I would like to read more books by Mary.
It starts with Cassie mourning her husband dead. Everyone in town new her husband was always spending money on her and he had loans everywhere.
Their is not a lot of women in this small town in Montana. The men were gathering around her saying she had to choose right after the funeral. Cassie or China Doll some called her was in shock.

DISCLOSURE: I was provided a copy of Montana Rose by the publisher. I was not paid nor required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

Cassie Griffin is burying her husband Lester Griffin. Lester Griffin has controlled every aspect of Cassie’s life; right down to what she’s suppose to wear to his funeral. Now that he is dead, what is a pregnant, homeless, widow to do, especially in a town where available women are scarce? How about remarry right on t...more

If the name Mary Connealy is on the cover of a book, I know I’m in for a good read. Having cracked up as I hightailed it through Petticoat Ranch and Calico Canyon, I was fully prepared to chuckle my way though Montana Rose as well. To my surprise, I found this historical to be delightfully different. While some scenes launched me into laughter, Montana Rose offers more than mere entertainment. Connealy has crafted a story with an important message, but she conveys it with such skill and finesse ...more

Mary is a great writter and I have never read a book that I didn't like that she wrote. Montana Rose starts out with a young girl buring her husband and there are not but a few women in this little town, so they didn't even get him buried until the men started crowding around her and one was going to force her to marry one of them that day while the parson was still in town.
The lady that ran the store talked the red haired young man that dug the grave to marry her as she was expecting a b...more

Mary Connealy and historical westerns - they are like peas and carrots, german chocolate cake and coconut frosting, Husker football and red and white fans - you just can't have one without the other. Mary's books are in the rare category where I will read sections of the book out loud to my husband because the writing is so good I know he will appreciate it along with me, even though he doesn't have a clue about the storyline. I did that with Montana Rose - I read him an entire chapter and we b...more

I enjoyed Mary Connealy's Gingham Mountain, so when given the chance to read her newest, Montana Rose, I jumped at it.

Montana Rose is the story of Cassie and Red. The book begins with the burial of Cassie's first husband, Griff. She has always been known (behind her back)as "China Doll" because of her expensive clothes and lack of interaction with the townsfolk. After husband is buried, all the single men at the funeral vie for her hand, since she needs a husband and the ...more

Montana Rose by Mary Connealy is the first in the Montana Marriage series and what a way to kick it off! Cassie Griffin learned well how to be a perfect china doll under her abusive husband's tutelage; she doesn't interact with other people, she does everything her husband asks without question and she never shows sadness or fear. That facade is challenged when he dies leaving her a penniless pregnant widow in the Montana Territory in 1875. Before his body is buried, the men are lining up in the...more

Cassie Griffin is not noticed by the three other people as they talk badly of her late husband and her. Red Dawson is digging the hole they will be putting Griff into and Seth and Muriel, who have taken her in and helped her since his death yesterday. When the couple leaves Cassie comes forward and attacks Red. He can't be digging a hole for Griff, Griff can't be dead. He is though. Griff was her guardian at twelve and married her at fifteen. Mary Connealy's books always have a way of pulling me in and getting under my skin. Montana Rose was no exception at all! She took a seemingly ordinary setting out West with every-day people, and turned it into a story that was full of emotion. I connected with these characters in a way that hasn't happened to me in a very long time, so much so that I felt like I was a small part of their community.

I loved the compliment at the very beginning of the book that stated this was a tribut...more

This is the first book in a series about Divide, Montana. Mary Connealy writes in her foreword that her inspiration was Janette Oke's Love Comes Softly. Although premise is similar--a pregnant woman is widowed in the west and needs to marry to survive--the story is completely its own. It is based on Christian values and the values are reiterated throughout the book, yet are not overly pushy or preachy.

Cassie Griffen's husband, Griff, moved her to the west and built her a big, be...more

Sometimes its hit or miss with Connealy's work. This one was a hit for me. It taught some very important lessons about being yourself and was a very inspiring book for me.

Cassie had been controlled for all of her not so long life. Now eighteen and pregnant, she has to watch as her husband is being buried. As it is rural Montana the dirt isn't even all settled before numerous men start clamoring to be the one to marry her and take care of her. Luckily, Red Dawson steps in before on...more

MONTANA ROSE by Mary Connealy is a pleasurable read set in the 1800s. We watch as a pregnant Cassie Griffin buries her husband, and in the same day finds herself in a tug-of-war between two men who want to marry her, and one man that doesn't. Wade and Mort Sawyer, powerful ranchers in the area, want Cassie all for their own. But Red Dawson knows of their brutality and will not allow Cassie to fall prey to their evil ways.

I won this book on goodreads and was excited to read it!

This book was a cute read, and a very quick read (I actually read it in until the wee hours of the morning when my cat had gone missing and I couldn't sleep. Oh, and the cat did finally come home.)

There were a couple things about it that I wanted to say about audience.
First, it is a book for a younger crowd, maybe 12-14 or so? I love adolescent fiction, so that was great for me.
Second, it is a "Chr...more

The beginning of this one was so stiff. It was weird that Cassie was being paraded around by all the men wishing to marry her minutes after her husband died. Obviously this was for the sake of story, but it still didn't make me excited to read the rest. I don't like the multiple stories and points of view going on. I think its too many for one story.

However, Red and Cass are really cute together and once they get married, the parts with them together are sweet.

Sometimes however, whe...more

This book is actually the first in a series but I had read #2 (The Husband Tree) first. Silly me. It's best to go in order, right? Like cutting in line at a store check out, it can lead to upsets. Well, I found this to not be much of a issue in this case. The only person who can get upset is me and I loved it anyway.

As with anything that is Mary Connealy related that I've read so far, Montana Rose can stand on it's own. Poor 'china doll' Cassandra. Through the first...more

'Montana Rose' is a Christian historical romance set in 1875 Montana Territory.

I hadn't noticed that this was a Christian romance before I started reading, and in fact it wasn't until the second half of the book that it really picked up and ran with the Christian message. I wasn't planning to read another overly Christian story for awhile, so I am actually pleased I didn't know in advance otherwise I would have missed out on a fantastic book.

Mary Connealy is an author who truly knows how to grab your attention from the get go.

As Cassie Griffin watches her husband get buried, she feels utterly hopeless. Alone and pregnant, she has nowhere to turn. Thank God for the likes of Red Dawson, who steps up to marry her, take her back to his home, and care for her. Though this decision is sudden, it is the only way to keep Cassie safe from slimy villain Wade Sawyer.

Connealy has created two humble, innocent characters i...more

I can't imagine what life might have been like in 1875 Montana, but thanks to Mary Connealy, I got a glimpse of what she thinks it might have been. Cassie, a pregnant widow who is forced to marry on the eve of her husband's death is a strong and vibrate character. She really is not what she seems. Cassie's new husband, Red is the perfect gentleman who feels unworthy of her beauty and love. Together they tell a tale of faith and trust in not only each other, but also God.

I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I am usually pretty strictly in to "Chick-lit" or "Paranormal Romance" and this book was a Western, which is something I never thought I'd had an interest in. The story itself was very engaging and I felt very pulled in and invested in what would happen to Cassie, but also all the other characters. It was easy to get a feel for who all the people were and visualize their environments. The writing was very smoo...more

Mary Connealy brings us Montana Rose, book 1 in the Montana Marriages series and let me tell you, I didn't know whether or not to laugh or cry, so I did both! Mary's talent is blessedly amazing. She uses humor, heartache, sweet characters and God's wonderful love to create an incredible soul capturing story.

Montana Rose is a good title for this book because it shows how genuine love and concern for another human being can cause a person to bloom who had been previously stifled by fear. There were many things I enjoyed about this story. At first I found the repetition about the heroine Cassie's submissiveness, her abuse history, and the reference to her being a China doll a bit annoying. I clearly caught that early on. But the story was strong enough to pull me along. I quickly forgot that issue onc...more

Every time that I pick up and read a book from Mary Connealy I am in awe at the topics and issues that are addressed in such a loving and in depth manner. This specific book deals with marriage, courage, abuse, healing, strength, and new faith. The lives of the characters are so real and so easily comparable to real life that it is extremely difficult to remember that it supposedly just a fictitious story in novel format.

This is the first of Mary Connealy's new series. This is about a pregnant woman who is vertually a lone woman in Montanna after her husband dies. She ends up marrying another man the almost immediately after her husband is barried. There is one man who wants her for himself that causes some strife in the book. There is also another character that begins her story, but ends it in the next book of the series. I enjoyed this one.

This is my favorite Mary Connealy book so far!! I loved Red and the strong male figure he represented. Cassie was a very young, pregnant widow who needed a hero and Red stepped up to rescue her. The only part I did not enjoy was the birth scene. Cassie acted a bit too crazy and irrational for someone who wasn't on drugs and the whole scene went on too long. Just a slight criticism for an overall enjoyable book! On to book #2 in the series!

Received this book for free from goodreads and was not what I expected. Maninly was taken aback by the religious references. I generally do not read faith based fiction and although I am Catholic I'm not sure it is a genre I'm interested in. That said, I am not engaged with the characters introduced and probably will keep an eye out for the remaining series.

I wrote my first book when I was about twelve. A romance novel. I shudder to think what a twelve year old could know about romance. I have no idea what happened to the manuscript. I suppose my mother found it, and burned it while screaming in horror, but I’ve always been afraid to ask. Was it a hundred pages? Two? I have no idea, but I seem to remember just writing FOREVER!
