Poor Richard Laymon, he was born into the wrong world. The Eskimos live in a world of snow and have a hundred words for it, but Richard Laymon lived in a world of nipples and had only the one word. One single, lousy word. Nipple.
Sure, there were 'hard nipples' and 'long nipples', even more exotic 'glistening' or 'jutting' nipples - but in the end, it was all just nipples, nipples, nipples. So many adjectives, just one lonely noun.
No, if life was fair Richard Laymon would have been born into a ti...more

Man, this is one of the best Laymon books I have read. Once again, suspension of disbelief is a must, but this is the case with most horror fiction. Only, with this book, you are dealing with a magic bracelet that, once kissed by the one wearing it, allows you to leave your body and "ride" anyone you want. A cool premise, delivered in Laymon's usual style, with a twist and resolution I never saw coming. I have been on a Laymon kick lately, and this one and After Midnight are my two favorites, fo...more

To borrow the oft-quoted cover blurb from Stephen King, “If you’ve missed Laymon, you’ve missed a treat.” If you’ve never had the pleasure, I urge you to pick one up one of Laymon’s books (One Rainy Night remains my favourite). They’re the literary equivalent of watching a low-budget slasher flick while riding a dilapidated old roller coaster – a deliciously enjoyable thrill ride that doesn’t require much from the reader, other than to strap in, hold tight . . . and enjoy.

Body Rides is pretty mu...more

Ahhhhh. Finally done.
Well, I’ve actually been done for a few days now but I was mulling over how in hell I was going to put a review into words that would encapsulate this book. I mean – really give it that oomph of perspective that this book truly needs. * giggles *

It’s been hard. (No pun intended for those male readers).

I’ve been mulling for days.

I guess I should start off by saying that I was forewarned about Mr. Laymon and his needs, his plot requirements, his fantasies ….. that all kind o...more

It's been a while since I read a good horror and thought this sounded good. I was wrong. The premise is guy hears screaming in the middle of the night, rescues woman from nut job just in time, and she gives him the gift of what sounds like a really trashy snake bracelet which allows him to enter other people's bodies and hear their thoughts and feel what they feel without their knowledge. So the start isn't so bad but the rest is misogynistic crap. What does this guy do with this special power?...more

One of my ultimate top favorites by Laymon. Gave me EPIC dreams after reading it, and very few books actually get into my dreams. xD

I loved the whole idea, it was just unique to me and the characters were terrificly done. Been trying to get my husband to read this but he doesn't like horror books lol. It's well worth a read; imaginative and got the right amount of thrills that you'd expect from Laymon.

My favorite part had to be the ending though. It was memorable, adorable in a strange way (lol)...more

Ein absoluter Flop!
Inhalt

I love Richard Laymon. He writes stories that read like b-grade slasher flicks. Always fun. Always bloody. Always in bad taste.

With that being said, this book sucks, badly. The first 50 pages are decent, typical Laymon. Woman in trouble, crazy killer. Then this book goes off the deep end. It turns into a romance novel. The main character Neal, get laid more in the next 250 pages, than in a porn script. It is boring, repetitive, and unbelievable.

Finally we get the killer back but the novel is to...more

One of my favorite by Laymon.

Unlike Stephen King, Richard Laymon knows how to write an ending. This book is a little slow in the middle, but the beginning is like riding a rocket. I was reading at lightning speed and had the biggest grin on my face. Laymon's books are just so much fun! Extremely gory, sexually graphic, and refreshingly unpredictable, BODY RIDES is among the best of his books (IN THE DARK, ISLAND, NO SANCTUARY are just a few). If I was ever stranded on an island and allowed to read only one author, Richard L...more

Reading a book can be considered a body ride, the reader hops into the brain of each character and unknowns to others gets the front row seat of the action. Richard Laymon's Body Rides takes the same idea and runs with it in this book, making for an exciting and fast read that somehow spans over 500 pages yet it takes the reader all his might to tear away from the story. I can honestly say that this was a great week, reading this book, living through each character, not wanting it to end ever......more

The plot is different, I'll give Laymon that. It was a cool idea to have a bracelet where you can go body-hopping any time you want. The execution fell a little flat but overall the premise was good. As the back blurb reads, Neal gets sidetracked one night returning video tapes with a man torturing and murdering a gorgeous female. Putting on an act of bravery, he shoots the man, captures the woman, and saves the day. The ending should have him walking off with whistles and high fives shouldn't i...more

I'm a huge Richard Laymon fan and have read about 20 of his books. This, I felt, was one of his lesser works. It starts off incredibly, and I thought I was in for an epic thriller in the Laymon tradition, but instead the book meanders and shuffles around for way too long, and actually it became a bit of a chore to read. The concept behind the novel is incredible, and the passages of the book where Laymon explores this concept are excellent. It just seemed that the book as a whole didn't explore...more

I had never heard of Richard Laymon until last year...and wow...what a suprise he was. I normally don't go for much horror or sc-fi (most of it reminds too much of the X-Files).

Laymon's prose is to the point and easy to follow. He not only had a mastery for written word but for leading the reader down twisting corridors of a story. Compulsively readable and delves deep into the hellish parts of human existance. No alien visitor BS here. True human terror.

Okay so before I joined my book club they read this book. Every meeting they talk about it. Every book is compared to it in some way. Wow, now I know why. This book is awful. The only reason it got two stars is that it would make a great short story. 100 pages long just the start and the very end this would be a a good story. The middle of the book is total drivel. Horrible dialog, unbelievable decisions. The characters are so one dimensional.

Richard Laymon has recently been discovered by myself and added to my top ten all time favorite authors. Body Rides was the 1st if his books that I read and absolutely loved the content & concept. After reading Body Rides, I tried to find every book I could by him. I was extremely disappointed to learn that he passed away.

One of my all time favourite books of all time, imaginative, funny, dark & classic Laymon.
Easy to read characters, relatable at times.
a fantasy story that left me thinking after I finished the book, what would I do if I were in the story.
Make this your next to read....
Highly recommend

I wasn't really looking forward to reading this book, but I was surprised. I liked the characters, although I found it a little strange that the women accepted each other so easily. The story took a little while to get going. Not Laymons best but it wasn't his worst either.

This was a great book! And completely insane! I literally read and read this book till it was done. So hard to put it down. A lot of heart pounding action in this one. A great thiller by a great Author. I think I will definitely have to read this book again.

Neal saves the life of a woman who gives him a magic bracelet that allows him to enter the mind and body of another person without them knowing he is there. But the person who wants Elise dead is not going to let Neal get away with saving her and decides they both have to die.

I loved the idea of this book. I think most of us have fancied the idea of getting into someone else's head and this story lets you explore some of the possibilities. It has more depth and imagination than most of Laymon's...more

I read this way back many years ago when I was in High School, I remember doing a book report in English class on this book - my classmates and teacher thought I was a bit odd !! haha !! but I loved it :D must pick it up and read it again !

I thought this book was pretty silly and had alot of lame parts, especially introducing the ditzy Sue for a threesome! it was as if an adolescent boy wrote about his fantasy and I just didn't buy into the story. Plus Sue's backwoods way of talking had me cringing, it was like nails on a chalkboard.

Been a long time since I read this, but I remember it being very different to anything I had read before and enjoyed it...don't really remember what happened in it though. I may need to read it again!

This was an awesome book, just the idea of being able to transport one's soul/mind into another's without them knowing is amazing; the possibilities are endless. I want to read more books on this!

did not like this book at all. Laymon is best when he's working with characters that are over-the-top but the horror could be real. This is too fantastical for me.
Aaron Urbanski
Intense, fast paced novel about a magic bracelet that allows the person wearing it to 'astral project,' which is sort of an out of body experience. I dig it.

Everyone has wanted to know what being in someone else's skin might be like. This book proves it might not be a pleasurable experience!

The idea of being able to hitch a "Ride" in another persons body was way too cool to pass up. Laymon at his finest.
