In July of 1989 Eighteen year old Kaitlyn Arquette was chased and shot to death. The police believe it was a random shooting, but the Arquette family believes it was because she knew somethings she shouldn't of. This is book is about her death, the investigation surrounding it, the events following her death and the family searching for the truth of why Kaitlyn was murdered.

This true story of the unsolved murder of Novelist Lois Duncan's 18 yo daughter Kaitlin grabbed me from page 1 and kept my attention half way through the book. The second half, however was bogged down with so much speculative detail from psychics and the author I found myself skipping over some of the psychic encounters.
There is much to enjoy about this true story, while "enjoy" is probably not the best word. Duncan is a gifted storyteller and unlike some first person accounts, she writes with a...more

The book Who Killed My Daughter is about this real-life event of author named Lois Duncan who tries to find out who killed her daughter. It all started when her 18 year old daughter wanted to stay over at her friend's house. Lois agreed to it. She later gets a call from the hospital that her daughter has been shot in the head 2 times. Heartbroken, she automatically knew that her daughter was going to die. She consulted with her daughter's boyfriend Doug and several cops. They come into conclusio...more
This book is amazing! I absolutely loved it! It was recommended to me by my sisters and mother who have all read it and loved it. The story is so sad and interesting, it captivates the reader the whole 400 pages. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

I grew up reading books for young adults by Lois Duncan. So when I saw her name in the true crime section as an adult I had to pick it up. Unfortunately, this is a very personal story for her about the murder of her daughter, and the efforts to find the killer(s).
Usually true crime authors have a peripheral bearing on the story. Here our author was front and center, which made for a very different perspective on the crime. She recounts their attempts at working with the police, detectives, and...more

I chose this book from a list of nonfiction for my Adult Pop Lit class because I read a lot of nonfiction, but have never read true crime before. I'm sort of surprised I haven't as I tend to really enjoy things like Forensic Files and Unsolved Mysteries.
Anyway, for class, I'm thinking about why readers might like this kind of book...personally, I'm drawn to the process and the puzzle. I think it's so interesting how crimes are solved and the amazing things we can do with technology and scientif...more

I loved Lois Duncan's books when I was in junior high. I was surprised to see she had written a true crime book, and decided to read it.
The book is about the murder of Duncan's teenage daughter. It's a well-written portrayal of the grief of a horrible loss, plus the increasing frustration and anger of parents watching as the investigation is handled badly and then dropped altogether.
The reason for the two stars is that the book is not written solely by Duncan. She includes very long passages of...more

I don't usually like true crime books written about a case that hasn't been solved, but this book was great. The author writes in a way that is very comfortable and easy to follow, she provides enough information that you feel like you're experiencing everything with her, yet it's not so technical that you get bored or distracted, and the book really felt like it had a solid, logical ending despite the fact that the case is still unsolved.

I had no idea that Lois Duncan, bestselling young adult author, used to live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I also had no idea that her eighteen year old daughter, Kaitlyn Arquette, was murdered in downtown Albuquerque in 1989, and that the case is still unsolved. This true crime memoir is terrifying and fascinating. Duncan's search for her daughter's killer (killers?) includes the discovery of a possible Vietnamese gang connection, car accident scams, interstate drug trafficking, psychics, shoddy...more
I must have been living under a rock to not know that Lois Duncan's daughter was murdered in 1989. I've enjoyed her YA fiction for many years.
This story is an incredibly sad and real account of her attempt to deal with her daughter's murder and to try to get the APD to help find the murderers. I am saddened that the APD dropped the ball over and over again - they acted like they didn't even care about solving this case.
I understand why Duncan included the passages from the psychics, but some o...more

I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone one who likes to ready non-fiction books. This book has a lot of mystery and suspension. Its about a teenage girl named kait who was shot one day and believed to have been because she found out of something she shouldn't have because her boyfriend was involved in a gang who did drug dealing. Her family is devastated when they find out , specially her mom because in a way she feels guilty and felt like she could have saved her. I cant rel...more
I would probably give this book a 4.5. I thought this book was a the best one that Lois Duncan wrote because it happened to her and in the book her daughter, Kaitlyn was shot. The police barely investigate it and they don't follow up on tipsters or want help from Kaitlyn's mother because they think she is too emotional and doesn't know what she is talking about. So Lois, Kaitlyn's mother takes the situation into her own hands. She gets additional help from a reporter who agrees with her that th...more
I would probably give this a 3.5. I found it riveting, imagining the daily reality of what this family went through while they tried to cope with this murder...my heart goes out to them, and I hope they are able to find justice for Kaitlyn. A lot of people might not get into the psychic aspects of the story, but I had no problem with them and found them interesting...it's amazing how one's mind opens about these things when they lose their own loved ones. Many of the coincidences she pointed out...more
I read this nonfiction work only last summer. I found it in a box of donations and was immediately taken when I realized the author was the young adult (YA) writer. The story is about the true life tragedy of Duncan's daughter being shot to death. Suspicion surrounded a group of Vietnamese business types who were in a racket to make insurance money off of LA travelers involved in orchestrated car accidents. The odd thing is that recently when we visited our son in LA, we came face-to-face with a...more
After reading "Who Killed My Daughter" I felt dissatisfied because the ending is not fulfilling. This book is almost like a mix between a memoir and a murder mystery but at the end, the killer isn't revealed. Although at times throughout the book I was interested, mostly I felt that there were too many psychic readings and not enough interesting details. I am not sure if I would recommend this book to others because it didn't exactly interest me. Even though I didn't enjoy it, I still thought th...more
Well i'm not all the way done with it but pretty close. This book is probably the best book i've read in awhile. It's about this mother who is the author, her daughter Kait gets gunned down and she goes to the hospital and her mother finds out she's in critical condition. She calls all of her sons and daughters to come up to the hospital to tell them what has happened and to say their last goodbyes. After they get home from the hospital all of her kids spend the night at her house and all stay i...more
This was a very difficult book for me to read for several reasons.
First of all, I knew even before starting the book that it would supply me with no answers. I was afraid that would make for a frustrating read, and I was partly right, but on the other hand it probably also spared me an even greater frustration of turning the last page and not getting the information I wanted.
Secondly, what a horrible, horrible situation to be in! Of course I know that it's written from a slanted viewpoint, but I...more

This is the second time I have read this book by Lois Duncan - this edition has new updates on the continuing investigation behind the murder of Duncan's youngest daughter, Kaitlyn Arquette, in 1989. It is the heartwrenching journey that Duncan's family underwent as they faced this tragedy. Duncan, her husband, and four other children all add pieces to the puzzle surrounding Kaitlyn's death throughout the book; Duncan even meets with several psychics and has contact with her daughter through thi...more
The stuff of nightmares, honestly. I first read this when I was in junior high and it always stuck with me, but I don't think I really understood it as a true story - it honestly reads like one of Lois Duncan's novels, only the heroine is terrorized and murdered instead of saving the day.
This time around, I went straight to the internet to see if the case had been solved. 18 years later, it has not. However, they've been working with PIs and tipsters, and now that the Albuquerque corruption is...more

This was a true story about Lois Duncan's investigation of her daughter's murder. I actually saw a bit about this on "Unsolved Mysteries" and it was very intriguing... especially considering the type of books that she writes. I was a fan of Duncan and that was my major reason for reading this book, but I also enjoy true crime novels and that was how this read--so it took much longer to read than her other books. I was a bit disappointed that the mystery remains unsolved.
I was interested to read this story because it is a New Mexico crime but the parts about the psychic was a little hard to read. I guess I'm a skeptic about such things but still even if I weren't I think there was maybe too much of it. But if something like that happened to my kid I'm pretty sure I would probably try every avenue open to me. It was an interesting book and even though it was an unsolved crime I thought very few details were ever buttoned down.
an amazing book and so hard to put down!
I didn't think I knew any of the story before I started reading the book, but I am (and always have been) an avid watcher of Unsolved mysteries and immediately knew I KNEW THE STORY!
I'm still stunned by the break down of the police and the injustice of the system (how can that many people work AGAINST finding the truth!)
I'm so glad I read this book.
My Mom MUST read this book!

So far this book is good, and I think it will just get better. Lois Duncan, from what I can tell, actual daughter was murdered. So I guess I just have to keep reading to find out the rest.
I finally finished this book. It was a little long, but still pretty decent. During the whole book though i had to keep reminding myself that this was a true story. I really liked this book ... read it when I was younger and have read it several times since. It is frustrating to hear all of the information and know that these people could probably have been caught. Lois uses several mediums in this which is intriguing. I know that she was working on a follow up book, but I don't think that it has ever been completed and / or finished. Good read that will keep you thinking.
It was a very sad story. The extended transcripts of reading from psychics was a little much for me. I probably would have enjoyed it more if Duncan paraphrased or summarized what the psychics said instead of having to wade through each reading. Still, it must have been a horrible experience beyond imagination for this family to endure...and the botched police investigation is infuriating.
I was really surprised when I was in my local library in the true crime section & I came across a book by Lois Duncan. I read her books as a teenager. I took it home & read it in a day. The book is about her own daughter who was killed & her involvement in the case. It's very sad how it remains unsolved. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Lois Duncan or true crime.
I read this quite a while ago, and had no problem recommending it to junior high readers who loved Lois Duncan's mysteries. This is actually a true story about Duncan's daughter, who was killed in an accident. There were several puzzling pieces about the accident that Were investigated, even calling in a psychic from Delavan, Illinois. Fascinating read!
While the genre seems to be true crime, as an author and her family try to learn more about the circumstances surrounding her daughter's murder, a good portion of the book is devoted to the many psychics contacted, with their readings, and psychic phenomena experienced by the family members. A quick, interesting read, though it does not inspire a lot of confidence in the criminal justice system.
I loved this book. I read this back when I was in high school and it really touched me. I think having the connection of living in New Mexico also helped for me to connect to this setting. I would recommend this book. True story of a mother whose daughter was murdered. She lays out facts underlying her case which has never been solved.

Lois Duncan (born Lois Duncan Steinmetz, April 28, 1934) is an American writer and novelist, known primarily for her books for children and young adults, in particular (and some times controversially considering her young readership) crime thrillers. Duncan's parents were the noted magazine photographers Lois Steinmetz and Joseph Janney Steinmetz. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but gr...more
