Lois Duncan (Goodreads Author)
It doesn't occur to Nore to take the dream-warning seriously. Her new stepmother and stepbrother seem nice. But why does Nore feel so uneasy around them?

This book was amazing! This is one of the few books that I liked to read that wasn't about sports. I would definatly recommend this book to a friend or to anyone else. When you read this novel, you can't put it down. It gets really suspenseful and you never know what is going to happen next. That is how I was, I couldn't put the book down because it was so good. Lois Duncan is my favorite author and he writes the best horror/mystery books in my opinion. If you are ever looking for something to r...more
How suspenseful is a book that's peppered, from the beginning, with foreshadowing like "... on that day last June when my nightmare summer at Shadow Grove began." Ok, so three paragraphs in we already know bad stuff is going to happen, but she's going to be ok.
Of course almost every time I read a suspense, horror, or ghost story I encounter this kind of thing. I guess that's why I read so few of them.
Anyway, in this particular case, I recommend you read Tuck Everlasting instead. Much better tre...more

I'm reading all of my son's AR (for school) books with him so we can discuss and I can make sure he is actually reading rather than just flipping pages. Haha. He hasn't finished yet so it will be interesting to get his perspective.
The book was interesting and fast paced enough to keep one reading but I had a few major issues with it.

So I've talked about my Joan Lowery Nixon phase before. I actually think I discovered Lois Duncan right before Nixon, but the two will always go hand and hand in my mind. Together they perfectly satisfied my twelve-year-old thirst for a light blending of suspense and the macabre. And no Duncan book did that better than the deliciously creepy LOCKED IN TIME. I enjoyed all of her books and they all succeeded in giving me the chills at one point or another. My old copy of I Know What You Did Last S...more
Interested by the summary, I grabbed it from a book sale for 50 cents. I started it with lower expectations - Duncan's books always have fascinating plots, but sometimes I can't handle the stress of reading them. This, however, seemed a departure for her writing. Nore's situation was incredibly realistic, and while you were scared it wasn't horror-movie scary, more shocking scary at the reality of what is possible. The romance isn't overdone, and the characterization was fantastic. When I finish...more
I would have starred this higher if I was teenager reading it as I think I would have enjoyed it much more at about twelve. Duncan is a good writer and I plan to read more of her mysteries, but this was a just a bit too predictable. I don't think it was supposed to be a huge surprise but I figured out the mystery almost immediately, taking away some of the punch later on. However, she build tension slowly, the characters are relatively interesting and creepy, and I loved the setting (south Louis...more
This is a young adult book and a very fast read. Lois Duncan was my favorite author as a teen, but I never read this book and it was a great way to spend a Sunday.
As is typical of a Lois Duncan book, she reels you in through her characters, suspenseful story line and fast-moving plot. Nore Roberts, 17, joins her dad and his new family for the summer in a historic plantation home and quickly realizes that the family is a bit odd. Soon she realizes that she and her father are in danger and devises...more

This is a YA book that my son pulled off the shelf at the library. Wasn't sure it would be appropriate for a 9-year-old, so decided to read it first. Still not sure it's fully appropriate for a 4th grader (YMMV, depending on the kid - main character is a 17-year-old girl who's definitely interested in boys; also, there are several scenes of attempted murder), but I enjoyed it and it would most certainly have been something I would have read and enjoyed in middle school. Just the right amount of...more
I just read Locked in Time and I loved it. Lois Duncan really has a way of capturing the lower Louisiana bayou country. That is where I am from and she nailed it, including the accents. The story kept me interested and it was a quick read. I would love to see an film adaptation of this novel one day. So far out of all the Lois Duncan books that I read this has been the best one. I really don't know how she can top it but I'll continue to read her novels... you never know. If you have 5 hour layo...more
This is the second book I've read by Lois Duncan. The first was They Never Came Home, which is a better book than this one. Duncan's writing style is good in both books, but the plot of Locked in Time was too predictable. Both books use suspense throughout a large part of the book, but suspense only works if the book isn't predictable. Also, the main character fails to make several obvious decisions that would have gotten her out of her bad situation.
i read this book at the end of the summer/beginning of the year, and i really liked it. it was a book that kept you into it the whole time. it was more low key, but something was always happening and there is always a twist when you think you have it figured out. its the story of a girl who, since her mother died about a year ago, she has gone of to a bording school, and this summer when she comes home, she wont be going home to her dads, but to her dads new WIFES house, and her two kids. but th...more
Lois Duncan is good with building atmosphere, both environmental and emotional. The story was set in Louisiana and the descriptions of the surroundings and even the weather were very well done. Duncan also created a very creepy feeling from the very beginning, but I found the foreshadowing to be a bit heavy-handed.

Good character portrayals - would have been a page-turner only I figured out early on the "mystery" - I think Duncan stole the idea from Tuck Everlasting (which was better written). She doesn't resolve any of the teen conflicts and the main character to me "sounds" too old to be a 17-year-old, at least by today's standards. This book was being discarded by our school library - yellowing pages and cover nearly falling off. Happens to books but sad to think soon we might not have books anymore - o...more
Nore had just moved into a new home with her dad, new stepmom and her brother. Things seemed ordianry on the outside but inside her home she starts to feel very uneasy, like something is bothering her. As the book, progresses on, all the secrets in her family are revealed. Her step mom is young and beautiful and had never aged at all, young forever.Nore tries to tell her dad but he doens;t belive her. Why is her stepmom like that???Will things go abck to normal?? I liked the book and the story a lot. The author was very descriptive and elaborate, which caused mixed feelings on my part. While I hada vivid image of everything, it became a little tedious after a while, because there was so much description and development. Ms. Duncan is an excellent story teller, and I was quite impressed with the creative story she created. I thought, however, that the ending was quite rushed and unfinished. It kind of fell flat for me, and I wish that there had been more...more
I'm basing my review on the fact that this book was read by me more then 10 years ago. From what I remember, the book was awesome. It had strong characters, was entertaining (but predictable) and it made me contemplate the prose and cons of immortality for a very long time. I should read it again, but I have made the mistake of reminiscing over those teen-novels, (reading R.L Stine and Christopher Pike is NOT the same when you read them 10 years later), so I think I'll keep my pre-pubescent stat...more
This is my least-favorite of Lois Duncan's books. It's also the only one I DIDN'T read as a teen since it was published after I had graduated from the YA section (and yes, there was a YA section at my library back in those olden days. YA DID exist pre-Twilight, you know). I don't know if this one packs less of a punch than her earlier works because it was written later in her career, or if Lois Duncan is best read when one is young and just discovering supernatural suspense fiction.

I've read one of Lois Duncan's novels in the past and thought it was AMAZING!
I found this book at a used book store and decided to read it, and I'm so glad I did!
This book was able to grasp and hold onto my attention throughout.
I think this may have been because of the characters. Each character's personality seemed to flow off the pages of the novel and into reality. There were times when I found myself truely annoyed at Josie because of her 'pre-teen brat-like attitude'. I even began to hate...more

The book discuss the natural flow of time and human life. In the book, Nore meets her new step mother and her family during the summer vacation. Throughout the book, the author demonstrates life must go on. For many people, youth is the time for trying new things. While time flows and events pass, they should learn from their experiences and mistakes rather than denying it. And then, people can teach their knowledge to others and make better choices for themselves and for others.

I didnt like the beggining cuz it was kinda slow but the end was a lot better it didnt take me to long to read and it was pretty easy but i thought that it was kinda weird cuz i dont believe in the superstition type thingys and it had a lot of the magic and herbs and voodooo stuff which i didnt like but it obviously was inportant for the story to make sense i just dont like that kinda stuff cuz i think its stupid! but overall it was pretty good!
this riveting book by lois duncan tells of a story about a girl named nore whos father remarries and the woman and her family is a bit strange....a lot strange actually . always avoiding their past and always wanting to keep secrets. As nore learns more and more about their family she becomes more and more in danger untill eventually they do somthing about it.
i loved this book and the suspense.

I really loved the mystery and culture in this book. As a girl born and raised in Louisiana, I really appreciated all the southern characteristics of this book. Even though the whole mystery is obvious by the title and cover of the book, it's how the story gets there, and how the characters ended up that way that kept me so engrossed in this book.
A quick shivery read. Nore dreads meeting her dad's new family but when she joins them in a moldering old plantation in Louisiana cut off from all visitors, phones, and civilization she finds her original dread to be nothing compared with the reality of the situation. Lois Duncan knows how to get her reader caught up in the terror in this book.
It's pretty good so far, because im at the part were I'm hating Gabe for what he has done to Nore at the river. And now I'm at the part were Nore is starting to find out what the Berge family's Secret is. ohhh!
It's a GOOOOOOOOOOD book and I recommend it to people that like suspense, and finding something that u weren't suppose to know.. LOL

A very mysterious book! Nore father had married a beautiful women name Lisette. But when Nore finds out Lisette secret nobody believes her what she says. Read this book to find out what the secret is and if Nore can save her father before they both get killed! I recommend this book to anyone. It's a really awesome book to read at night!
I love the concept of the book. Family doesn't age, mom looks beautiful, marries rich guys, kills rich guys and their family. When Nore discovers their seceret, her father doesn't believe her. I liked the way Lois Duncan made it to be a diary of Nore, so it put more feeling into it. Overall review: edge-of-your-seat good
This novel was really interesting, even though it was predictable with lots of foreshadowing. Several spots in the story (the ending especially) felt rushed and not very well explained. While it's not a really memorable or life-changing book, it's an entertaining quick read that I would still recommend.
I was a bit hesitant to read another Lois Duncan book after 'Stranger With My Face'. But I was more than willing to give Lois Duncan a second chance, since her other book 'Summer of Fear' is one of my favorite books. And well, 'Locked in Time' turned out to be much more like Summer of Fear than the latter. I was once again barely able to set the book down. And since the book is so short anyways, it was an easy read. But the suspense and excitement of the book kept me hooked. My only problem with...more
Lois Duncan (born Lois Duncan Steinmetz, April 28, 1934) is an American writer and novelist, known primarily for her books for children and young adults, in particular (and some times controversially considering her young readership) crime thrillers. Duncan's parents were the noted magazine photographers Lois Steinmetz and Joseph Janney Steinmetz. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but gr...more
