This is the second in a series involving Ty Hauck by the author Andrew Gross. At the end of DARK TIDE, Ty had become involved romantically with one of the key players in his investigation. In the new novel, he ends that relationship, and hooks up with another woman who is a witness to a crime which is fundamental to his inquiry. The new novel begins with Ty and his daughter at a convenience store one morning, and while standing in line to pay for their purchases, the store is sprayed with automa...more

4.0 out of 5 stars Murder, greed and corruption in Greenwich..., March 8, 2009

This review is from: Don't Look Twice: A Novel (Hardcover)

This novel was a fun page turner that kept me guessing most of the way through. The plot has some depth and the story was interesting even though the characters were quite stereotypical of thrillers involving detectives, murder, gambling, crooked government and the requisite love interest. Along the way is the building body count, and ...more

Good Story; but Nothing Groundbreaking.

Brief Synopsis:
Lieutenant Ty Hauck was with his daughter at a gas station when a drive by shooting occurred. What first appears to be revenge by a local gang is slowly uncovered as a deeper conspiracy. Lt. Hauck is told to back off and let it be; but Lt. Hauck cannot accept that and digs deeper and deeper as the book unfolds.

Overall Impressions:
DON'T LOOK TWICE is a fairly standard murder mystery thriller. At times, the p...more

Fast-paced whodunnit and emotional, but plot twists rather predictable.

Ty and his daughter, Jessie, are at the gas station, stocking up on fuel and supplies before taking the boat out for its final voyage of the year. While standing in line, a red truck slams to a stop outside and bullets start flying. Ty got a look at the shooter, and a partial plate, but when he turns to see if everyone’s alright, Jessie is unconscious and covered in blood. Ty flashes back to when Norah, his other ...more

This book's focus was totally off but yet it was good quick read. It was confusing and had a lot of twists and turns. The whole first part of the book you think it's about one thing like a revenge murder or gangs then midle of the book you are thinking it's gambling then the end of the book it switches focus abruptly. I'm real unsure of what the author was thinking and why the editor didn't rein him in a little bit. However, I can say that I like how the book is set up with short quick chapters....more

Ty Hauck and his daughter, Jessie had stopped off at the Exxon gas station to pick up a few items. It was just like any other Saturday morning or so Ty thought. Suddenly a truck pulls up outside, rolls down its window and starts firing. The whole incident took only a few minutes but it seemed like a lifetime to Ty.

After it was all over the carnage left behind was bad. One of the bodies is identified as
federal prosecutor David Sanger. He was working on a high profile case again...more

I didn't like this book as much as his first two, particularly the first (The Blue Zone). This is the second in a series featuring Lieutenant Hauck, a detective with the Greenwich, CT police department. Without giving anything away, this novel involves government corruption, corruption in a casino, and a whole host of bad guys whom Hauck pursues relentlessly. It also introduces a new love interest for the detective. While the story line was interesting enough to keep me reading, it seemed t...more

Detective Ty Hauck and his daughter Jessie stop by an Exxon station to pick up a few supplies before heading out for a day on Ty’s boat. A truck pulls up and riddles the station with bullets. Ty is able to keep Jessie safe but the man standing next to them is dead. The man killed is a federal prosecutor named David Sanger.

The shooter abandoned the truck not far from the station. When the police discovered the truck, a newspaper clipping is found inside that led the police to thi...more

I'm really getting into crime books now. I like how fast paced they are. This was quiet a quick read. Liked the plot. I was a bit disappointed when our hero Ty fell for the oldest trick in the book. Men are dumb when it comes to females but I would have thought Ty was smarter than that. I felt there was also some unfinished business when it came to Karen. I don't understand why he was starting something up with Annie. As for why people were being killed, I didn't really understand about the gen...more

This twisty, suspenseful murder mystery and thriller is a real page-turner. The characters are more realistic than those in many thrillers. The hero, Ty Hauck, for example, is a conscientious crusader for truth and justice against corruption among the rich and powerful, but he is flawed. He has a couple of lapses in judgment, falling for one obvious trap that you'd think he'd be smart enough to avoid. The story is well-told, the dialogue natural, the pace fast. With its short chapters, this book...more

577 LP Lt. Ty Hauck of the Greenwich Police dept. is in a connivence store with his daughter when a SUV pulls up outside the door, a window goes down and a muzzle pokes out. 80 some rounds later, one man is dead, Ty has a graze on the neck and his daughter is ok but in shock. Thus begins a tale of hired gangs, more killings, ties to a big Indian casino and eventually politics at high level and TY is in the middle trying to get to the bottom of it all. Does he succeed? A good enough read, I'd recommend, but hero Ty Hauk makes a number of stupid mistakes which serve to propell the action forward and get him in deeper and deeper. I usually don't like a dectective who makes that many mistakes. One mistake is allowed, even desired so the hero's not super human, but so many makes him almost bumbling. Still, he's an engaging character and I found myself forgiving his flaws.

The gist of it is there's a drive by shooting which kills a federal prosecutor. I...more

Don't Look Twice by Andrew Gross is a book filled with suspense, but I came away feeling that there were too many loose ends. Detective Ty Hauck is the hero in a small New England town. A quick stop-off at the neighborhood mini-mart turns into terror for Ty and his teenaged daughter. He rightly feels that a drive-by shooting in an upscale small town definitely deserves a closer look. Before he knows it he is entangled in a complicated series of red herrings. I did not enjoy this book as muc...more

First since this was an audiobook, let me review that part, and next I will get to the actual book content. Don't Look Twice was read by Christian Hoff, who I don't believe I have listened to before. Christian Hoff is a good reader, he used enough different voices/accents so that I could tell the people apart without much thought. The production is well-done and this audiobook does one thing that I just recently realized is very important to me. They use music at the beginning and end of eac...more

I really enjoyed reading this book. The pacing of this book was excellent. Lately it seems like most authors follow the cliff hanger at the end of each chapter "rule" to keep readers hooked. This book wasn't like that all. It had a strong steady paced that gradually increased the closer you got to the end. By the time I got to the last 150 pages I realized how captivating the plot had become and couldn't put it down. It was a refreshing and captivating read (by an author I had never re...more

Book2, in the Lieutenant Ty Hauck series

This is the author's follow up to "The Dark Tide", its storyline is captivating enough although heavy on old clichés and a touch formulaic in style. It nevertheless has some of the elements to make it a page turner and leave most satisfied and happy.

This story opens with a bang and keeps a steady pace throughout. It starts one morning with Ty and his daughter waiting in line at the cash of an Exxon station when out of the bl...more

Gross starts out the book with a bang and it just accerlates to the middle when it seemed he hit the brakes and then found the gas pedal for an explosive ending. Ty the local police chief is out on a weekend visit with his daughter when a drive by shooting happens at the Exxon where they are shopping. There are a couple possibilites of who the intended target or motive for the shooting could be. For a while we are following one trail, when aburptly a new idea is introduced. A few things happe...more

In his third novel out of the shadow of James Patterson, Gross cranks up the heat and the volume. I really enjoyed his first two solo efforts, but i really liked this one. Each book has gotten better than the last, and I can't wait for the next installment. His characters are believable, the plot is many layered and delivered well, and the pace is intense. I could not put this book down and found myself searching for excuses to stop whatever else I was doing just to sit down and read some more.

Ty Hauck is going fishing with his daughter. They stop at a convenience store and while waiting in line, they are fired on by two young men who drive up to the window and spray the store with bullets. The government agent behind them is killed. Ty gets to try and find out who sent the gang members as his instincts tell him this is now the vengeance slaying that it is portrayed. Ty believes the government agent was deliberately targeted.
There is lots of intrigue and red herrings.

I finally found out what happened to Ty's younger daughter, wicked fast paced read. Couldn't put it down. I see a lot of reviewers didn't enjoy this so much. For me I had no problems at all. Concise, thrilling and unstoppable reading.

Kudos to Andrew Gross!! Can't wait to find more of his books!!

I received this book along with his Reckless through Goodreads. Thank you so much Goodreads!!

The best Gross novel so far, in my opinion. Another Ty Hauck novel. This one starts with a drive-by shooting that seems to be a coverup for another crime. Then layer upon layer of crimes get unravelled over the source of the book. You can't be sure whether you're reading about the base crime until there's less than 50 pages left!

A fun read!

Detective Ty Hauck returns in this new novel that begins with a drive-by killing in the posh suburb of Greenwich, Ct. Enter a fascinating cast of corrupt politicians, and powerful businessmen. The case appears at first to be a revenge killing, but it gradually grows into something much more sinister. This is a fast-paced thriller that I really enjoyed.

This was my first Andrew Gross novel and I think it will be my last. I spent a good part of yesterday travelling, hence the reason the book is finished. I had nothing else to read with me. It's so annoying when you are not keen on a book. It just didn't grip me at all. I had heard a lot of good things about Andrew Gross. Does he have better novels?

Greenwich Det. Ty Hauck is certainly a compelling character, as are others that Gross develops, as the story unfolds...wonderful storyline regarding murders surrounding the politics of state sponsored gambling...I'm sucked into the story "bigtime"...it eventually involves Hauck's older brother and enough political pressure to make Hauck take an opportunity with a private security firm...I breathlessly await the 3rd installment!!!

I read this in one sitting. Lots of plot twists and excellent research into corruption. This book was fast paced and scary. The miracle was that Hauck was able to resolve all of the conflicts. I especially enjoyed that once again the Feds were part of the corruption. Read it-you'll enjoy it. A must read for mystery/suspense fans.

Okay, Andrew Gross is a great writer however I didn't feel that this was his best work. It was a goodread but I didn't care for the story line or the ending. I'm glad that I read it and I will read the new book Reckless that is coming out. His first 2 books on the other hand I loved. I think this was just a personal preference for me that it wasn't a fav, but worth a read. I thought the book was slow going and then it really picked up after page 100. Happy Reading. Heather

What a great triller featuring one of my personal favorite "leading men", Ty Hauck.

This is a story loaded with real life issues (i.e. gambling & corrupt coorperate players), mixed in with some stunning, believable twists and turns.

I was SAD when this book ended!

Enjoy,
