This was a very fun series to read. The books are short (only 100 pages each or so, including pages of beautiful illustrations that add to the overall enjoyment) and each book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so you really need to read the whole series to enjoy it.

I like these books a lot. I saw the movie and decided I should read the books. The are geared towards little children so they are pretty small and easy reading. I like them a ton though!

The collection was so much better than the movie. I encouraged my students to read as much of the collection as possible before we saw the movie. The students agreed, the books were so much better than the movie. The movie was great with special effects, but there is no greater movie with special effects than one's own imagination. If the movie portrayed the entire set of books, the audience would not have had the patience to sit through it all. As one student remarked: after a while the spe...more

It must be hard to be a children's fiction writer in a post-Harry Potter world. So many new fantasy series' seem at once to be grasping for the same level of fandom by using so many of the same devices as the Potter books, and yet at the same time desperately trying to assert their originality. There are a lot of good things to be said for the Spiderwick Chronicles, and I'm looking forward to the movie version's release in a few weeks. But at the same time, there's something kind of hollow about...more

I finally managed to finish this series! I was initially inspired to read it after I went to see the film with my two ten year old nephews this past winter. I enjoyed it quite a bit, being a lover of kid and teen lit and general and having a soft spot for Freddie Highmore. So I ordered the series as one book back in the spring. It’s sat on my coffee table since then, and I would pick it up every now and again and read a bit and then forget it for weeks and then pick it up again.

Okay, if it were up to just me, this series would probably only rate 2 or 3 stars. However, I read these with my son, Jacob, who was 5 at the time, and these books quickly became favorites for him. The story line was spare, and you could finish a chapter (or indeed, an entire book, very quickly). What I think makes these books a great read-alound is what happened as a result of reading them...they seemed to touch that inner chord of faerie mystery and magic that is so wonderful in childhood, ...more

I thought this was a great series for sci-fi/fantasy lovers. This definitely was NOT a series for small kids. It can be a little scary and violent at points, but it's great for older kids and adults. It's definitely helpful to read the books before seeing the movie though, because (like all movies-from-books) so much was changed for the big screen and you also need to understand the background and what the characters were thinking in their minds that you can't see conveyed on the screen.

Jonah and I have been reading these and we have loved them. It has been so fun to learn about these fantasy creatures by looking them up in the field guide as they are introduced in the plot. I do recommend having the field guide on hand while reading the books. I will often find Jonah curled up on the couch reading away, or hear him holler from the other room...Mom, what does e-x-p-e-r-i-e-n-c-e spell? I really liked this book. It contained the 5 short books that make up the series. I read these to see if my daughter would enjoy them. Whe is really getting into reading and I want to read what she might like. I loved the story-telling. It pulled me right into the world of faeries and the like. It was a very easy read. I was able to read all five books in a few hours. It was too scary for my 7 year old daughter but in a couple of years I think that it will be right up her alley. The story-tellin...more

Mistakenly, I watched the movie adaptation before reading the book, which in turn made me love the book and curse the screen. MANY key elements, characters and plot outlines were entirely left out of the movie, which to me would have made an average fantasy flick sparkle alive had they actually brought to life the true imagination and creativity of Holly Black.
As far as the first serial is concerned, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I however, was constantly looking for similarities from the film an...more

This was my daughter (age 4) and my first attempt at reading a series of stories with chapters (in preparation for Harry Potter, of course!). The story is creative, and illustrated. The chapters are short enough to hold a toddler (and mother's) attention. However, what it was lacking was substance and detail. I find that a lot with fantasy books: you either have books like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, where the author's know so much about their worlds, that volumes of supporting t...more

A couple weeks ago, I decided to buy another book that I had been considering for a while. The book was the first in a series called the “Spiderwick Chronicles. ” It’s a small book, smaller than the Snicket books and I read it quickly. Again, I highly recommend that series. These books are about three children whose parents recently divorced, so they go with their mother to live in an old house that belongs to their great aunt. In exploring the old house, the discover a book written by the...more

So obviously all I have been doing in my free time these last couple of days was to read children fantasy. I had been meaning to pick up Spiderwick for the longest of time - if only for the pretty illustrations. I like my illustrations, now more than ever. It was a tad disappointing because the plot ran all over the place and I did not quite like the writing style. I can't put my finger on it, but I suppose the language simply is not wrought well. Philip Reeve in Larklight and Starcross has a ma...more

My son Devin showed very little interest in reading until he picked up The Spiderwick Chronicles. It's the perfect format for kids who don't like to read or have a short attention span. The chapters are short and entertaining. Each chapter includes lots of illustrations. There are fantastical creatures each with his own unique personality. It's another classic "good verses evil" fantasy, it's like Harry potter for young readers. I highly recommend getting "Arthur Spiderwick'...more

I love this series! It's a hoot! I read it with my mom and sister. Also, this summer while on a family vacation we listened to this in the car.
If you want a fun series of imagination, humor and fantasy, you've chosen right.
The movie was a pretty good portrayal as far as movies and books go, but I still believe that the books were better.
Test your imagination, and hear how the world is from the mind of a boy named Jared Grace, and his family.

After I read the first book I totally said I wouldn't read the rest but then I saw the audiobooks at the library and since pickins were slim, went ahead and got it. I enjoyed it so much more, I think because it was one right after another like one story instead of 5 little tiny squishy books!

My daughter breezed through these books in a weekend, and she loved them. I read them right after she did, and I thought they were ok--they are definitely directed to kids, not adults. I was annoyed that as soon as something started to happen, the book would end (much like a chapter in a regular book ends). I guess I'm just used to the detail and complexity of Harry Potter, Fablehaven, or Eragon books (which of course are for older readers). There were some original ideas in these books, and I'm...more

I have only read the first book so far. It was good, but I think that I need to read more of them to really get where the story is going. I am looking forward to getting them soon though!
I just finished book 2 last night. Very good. This one was a little more exciting than the first, and I can tell that I am going to have to read all 5 to get to the end. They are very easy reads though, I finished book two while I was nursing the baby and the other kids were getting ready for bed. I lo...more
