5 stars – Paranormal/Sci-Fi Romance

I’ve had Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series on my TBR list for quite some time now, but I’m a little bit intimated by the number of books there are to get caught up on. The premise of The League series sounded interesting, the characters seemed intriguing, and with only three books produced so far, it felt a little less daunting of an undertaking. The main word that comes to mind to describe how I felt about this book is...WOW! And if it’s indicative of her other work...more

I’ve been a huge fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s writing ever since I first discovered the Dark-Hunter series and that amazing hero, Acheron. When I heard about the re-release of The League series, I was thrilled until I learned it was Sci-Fi because I’m really not a big fan of the genre. Truthfully, the only other Sci-Fi book I have ever read and really liked, loved in fact, was The Host by Stephenie Meyer. The Host, like Born of Night was pretty light on the techie stuff which is why it worked for...more

She belonged to the day, to warmth and sunshine.
Her world was light and wonderful, filled with love and laughter.
And he was born of night. His mother was the darkness, her cold embrace was all he had a right to crave.

I love that the story focuses more on the characters and not the sci-fi world!:) and its easy to read...

Born of Night was a brilliantly written story that I thoroughly enjoyed. At 533 pages, the book is admittedly long. However, I can’t recall ever feeling like there were parts of the book that could have been excluded. To the contrary, the character development and level of detail used to describe the Ichidan Universe was perfect.

I completely fell in love with Nykyrian, who is a great addition to the tortured-soul heroes out there. Though Nykyrian certainly goes through hell, enduring the worst...more

I loved this book. There are a few nitpicky things here and there that could have been improved on, but there was so many things that I loved that I can look past the bad.

This book is pretty much The Black Dagger Brotherhood in space. If you're a fan of the BDB, Zsadist in particular, then you'll probably love this as well.

Basically, the story centers around Nykyrian and Kiara, who couldn't be more different. Nykyrian is a highly skilled assassin who was tortured and abused during most of his ad...more

First book in Sherrilyn Kenyon's The League series. Science fiction romance. Nykyrian Quikiades was once part of The League but now he works against them. His current job is to protect Kiara Zamir. A woman who doesn't want protection. It was a little slow at times but overall a good read for me. I loved the hero, Nykyrian, but I wasn't overly fond of the heroine, Kiara. I didn't hate her but I found her to be a bit annoying at times. The world building was done in a comprehensible manner for me....more

I was mesmerized by the Ichidian universe when I read the short story Fire and Ice in the Man of My Dreams anthology and when I realized Born of Night was about Adron’s parents I was instantly curious…And in the end disappointed.

For starters, it was 200 pages too long, giving Ms. Kenyon the opportunity to transform Kiara from a whiny, and slightly annoying heroine into an obnoxious, selfish, spoiled, judgmental brat. One of those heroine you wish for someone to rape, strangle, stab, and dismembe...more

I really loved this book. Kenyon writes some of the best tortured heros. Now I must go read and see what Syn was really up to...

Oh. My. God!

This book kicked ASS! Major, huge rockin' ass! The characters were awesome, the setting was phenomenal, the plot was explosive, the writing (as always) was descriptive, the comedy was hilarious, and the action was smoldering!

In the Ichidian Universe, Nykyrian is the baddest of the bad. A renegade assassin from the League, he knows how to fight and has lived a SERIOUSLY sad, rough, hard life. Thrown into a human orphanage were he was treated worse than scum- beatings, starvation, abu...more

Yes, Born of Night does very much have the feel of Kenyon's Dark-Hunters, and yes, Nykyrian reminded me a bit of Ash - but you know what? I don't care, I love it when bad boys go good and I liked the dangerous yet honorable assasin who is transformed by love and acceptance and his heroine Kiara with her own ghosts is pretty good too. If I had any issues with the story, they were that Kenyon so brutally abuses Nykyrian. Like Acheron and Zarek, Nyk has the abusive hellacious childhood and early li...more

The League series originally made it's debut in 1996. The books are being re-released, expanded and with new cover art.

Once an assassin for The League, Nykyrian is constantly being hunted down, with a price on his head. Now he fights to protect the innocent. He hasn't had the easiest life unloved and abused most of this life because of what he is, he has built a thick skin around himself letting no one in. That is until he takes on the protection of Kiara Zamir. She changes everything.

I will definitely be re-reading this book I just finished it last night and I'm sad but glad I get to reread this book. I was put through the motions while reading this book. It had me in tears and full of joy all at the same time. Still at times I felt giddy as a teenager in love for the first time. The characters in this book seemed so very alive to me as if I knew them in my own life. This is the kind of story that is for everyone male or female. It has action, suspense, and romance ohhh and...more

This book was amazing! It was the best book I have read in a long time! It was also my first Sherrilyn Kenyon book and I look forward to there being many more of them in my future.

I really enjoyed going back to my roots and reading some sci-fi, while still indulging my new obsession of romance. And it really had everything. Laser blasters, space dog fights, bars full of unidentifiable aliens. All very cool. But most of all it had romance. OMG I could die happy. And I just might if I dont stop t...more

I think this is a classic Kenyon. I've read a couple of her historical novels (written under her alias Kinley MacGregor) and they all had the following in common:

* Hero had a horrible upbringing
* Mostly thanks to an unloving and violent father
* Hero has a (bad) reputation but is part of a secret DO GOOD organization, or family members are
* Danger! Peril! Somebody wants the hero or heroine death.

I find it quite intriguing that she makes these tropes work both in her historical and sci-fi work. At...more

This one is a tough book to categorize. It's technically sci-fi romance, but the storyline revolved around a world of assassins. The story did feature spaceships, other planets, and other races, but the main focus of the story shifted between the hero Nykyrian (and his tally of very detailed kills), and the woman Kiara that he was protecting.

Nykyrian is a scarred, lonely assassin who is cold and unwilling to get close to anyone. When he finds a hostage on a ship that his team was sent to destroy...more

Alright, so I love me some SK, but the prologue of this book did not spark my interest...and the beginning of the book did not grab me. So I set it aside because I had about 10 other books sitting on my coffee table. But all the reviews were great, so...I picked it up again a few weeks later. Boy am I ever glad I did. Didn't take too much longer for me to realize that I wasn't going to be able to put this one down.

This book is Book 1 in the series, The League, by Sherrilyn Kenyon. This book is a sci-fi/fantasy book, so it was quite different from my usual paranormal romance/ urban fantasy. I never quite know what to expect from strictly sci-fi books, but Sherrilyn Kenyon is an excellent writer and this book had great reviews, and I found it at the library. So, I gave it a go, and happily, I was not disappointed.

I listened to the audio version of this book, I did not read it. I wish I would have read it instead. The narration wasa bad. The narrator of this book is the same narrator that does the Night Huntress series and she uses the same voices in both series. So that was distracting. I also felt like she too heavily interpreted the characters. Anyway, for me it is hard to separate out my experience listening to the narration from the book itself. I had some issues with the book -- all the back and for...more

I can't believe I put off reading this book for so long! Mainly because I'm not a huge fan of futuristic/sci-fi romance.. But the setting, while other-worldly, was similar enough to Earth that I didn't get thrown (that sometimes happens in the In Death series for me:-p)..
Nykyrian is now one of my very favorite heroes! He had the worst possible past and childhood, yet keeps his own honor code... And while Kiara grated a little on my nerves at times, I really enjoyed the fact that she didn't fall...more

Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon is the first installment in the League Series. The hardcover edition was published by St. Martin’s Press on March 2008 and the the paperback edition (which is the one I own) was published by St. Martin’s Paperbacks on October 2009.

I won’t bore you with my own version of the story’s summary. You can read the official synopsis above for that.

Here are some taglines that would be really great to put on the back cover of this book:

"Troubled ex-assassin Nykyrian takes on his most difficult assignment ever - to protect the Princess Kiara from the universe's most deadly killers. But when things turn personal, Nykyrian finds that saving Kiara may mean facing the one enemy he fears most of all - love."

Or: "Like Twilight, but dumber and dirtier!"

Maybe I should say first that this was a new genre for me. One time I wrote a negative review of...more

Okay, well I lied about Darling's book being my last Kenyon novel and ended up doing this one on a dare. Why? Because I am silly like that and am just a glutton for punishment, especially since I know the punishment before it is even spoken -.-

Anyway, it's basically like any other book Kenyon has ever written. The only thing that consistently changes? The character names, nothing more, nothing less. We have the same setup for love, plot,...more

This book makes no sense.

It says grain when I think it means groin. Or scrap when it means crap and should all kinds of these little annoying things. Only 16% and find the writing really distracting and can't get into story.

And wtf they safe the helpless female from two assassins, but just let them go knowing they'll try to kill her again? It keeps saying what a badass the guys are but they have yet to show that. Why not at least restrain the guys trying to kill her? Or kill them, wait that's...more

This is quite different to the dark hunter series...not exactly paranormal romance more like fantasy or science fiction mixed with romance (not entirely sure). But this is still a great book. Basically Nykyrian is an ex League assassin and he is a rare one, i.e. there has never been an ex League assassin before him, you join the League and you die as they command. You can never leave. It's just the first indication of how dangerou...more

I like the new world Sherrilyn Kenyon has created for her League series. It is ruthless and dangerous and different from her other series'. This book appeared to be long and drawn out and just when you thought it was getting somewhere along came something else. I didn't have the same feeling for this book that I've had for most of her Dark Hunter books.

Having said that I did actually like her characters though you find yourself comparing them to the Dark Hunter characters. Right off the bat we m...more

I adored this book.

A huge fan of Kenyon's Dark Hunter series, I've been reluctant to try out The League series, simply because I'm not so keen on the science fiction genre.

In any case, I've been craving a new Kenyon story so decided to give it a go. I'm glad I did, and wish I had sooner. It was her characters that reeled me in, and everything else fell into place from there.

Kenyon is the master at creating strong, tortured heroes, and Nykyrian is no exception. His story and some elements of hi...more
