"LA Candy" was recommended to me by a good friend, but she enjoyed the book a lot more than I did. One reason could be that she is a fan of Lauren Conrad's MTV shows and I don't watch them. I did think I would gain insight to the world of reality tv, but I was disappointed in the small amount of insider info in the book, which could have been summed up in a short magazine article.

This book is not as horrible as I expected, but not as good as I wished for it to be. It was only mildly entertaining. I haven't read very many other chick-lit type young adult novels, so I'm not sure how this compares. There are a couple things that annoyed me, which I realize may all be due to the fact that I'm an old codger.

I almost forgot I read this book (call it self-preservation), but I remembered after a marathon of Laguna Beach. Also known as: Aileen Avoids Outlining, Part Deux.
It was summer, I believe. I had recently moved to Seattle and was flying back to Pittsburgh for a friend's bachelorette party. The book I was currently reading? Anna Karenina. The book I wanted to read? L.A. Candy.

I can't believe I didn't hate this book! I definitely didn't buy it...I read it and am going to review it for the publisher (not like they're going to publish what I write about it!) so that I can add the book to my school library.
What I liked most about the book, insignificant as it is, is the chapter titles, which were sentences or phrases taken from the chapter.

Groundbreaking! A tour de force! Just kidding, I mean it's Lauren Conrad's teen novel... It starts off kinda slow and ho hum for a while, but once the characters in the book begin the filming of the reality show that they're on, it gets very interesting for any fan of The Hills. Although the accounts are "fictional," it definitely gives great insight and potential knowledge about how the producers impacted the storyline and the characters, how the characters interacted with each other...more
While the story line and plot had potential, the language of the book annoyed me. Text phrases like 'OMG', 'WTF', and what-not made the book look childish. I also hated how in front of almost every sentence was the word 'like'. Even the straight male characters used 'like' often. I truly believe that Conrad wrote this book herself because while she is suppose to be really smart, the idea and text of the book match her personality. This is honestly one of the worst books that I have ever rea...more
While I didn't think this was the worst book I've ever read, I didn't think it was the best either. I did enjoy it alot more than I thought I would, but there were just parts that left me scratching my head. I wasn't a fan of Madison(but then again, who would be) and I wasn't too crazy about Scarlett, but at the same time I liked her because she was trying to be a good friend and watching out for Jane, but Jane couldn't realize that. I thought that it was a little too loosely based on her own li...more
Well at least they got rid of Laruen's mustache for the photo on the back cover....
Ok after having actually finished the book (yes I read the damn thing) I have decided that this is just like The Hills---shallow, vapid, plotless, and yet I find myself coming back for more.
After the shitty week I have had I needed some brain-numbing escapism, and this fit the bill perfectly.

I will admit that I did buy this book was because I am a fan of Lauren Conrad and the Hills. I didnt expect high hopes for the novel because I didn't know how good of writer she was. Going back to the novel...I seriously loved it.

If you love knowing all the latest gossip, drama, and scandals then you will love L.A. candy. It takes you up close and personal to all the hits and misses in fabulous Los Angelous. Lauren Conrad the author and star of televisions old hottest hit show "the hills" lived in Los Angelous and started her career there. She wrote a book about what it was like and what really happened. She wrote it through other characters, meaning 'Scarlet' and 'jane', the two main characters, re-lived wha...more
I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I picked up this book. I've read 2 chick-lit books before; one was 'confession of a shopaholic' which i think it was good (read it when I was 12 or something so not sure if I'll still think it's good now) and the other one was from the little black dress whatever that I can't even bother remembering the title because I didn't even finish reading it. All I know is that LA Candy was cheap and I used to watch Laguna Beach. So, why not?

L.A Candy might not be an emotional masterpiece of lit, but it's a good story about how fame changed the lives of two best friends. For a first time author Lauren did a good job at developing her the plot and people of L.A Candy, way better than what I or could really expected. It's a fun book that gives us details in the world of reality TV, something Conrad knows about more than anything.

Yay to total crap reading! I really really needed this book. If you don't know, this book was "written" by Lauren Conrad otherwise known as that girl from Laguna Beach and The Hills. It's about two girls who move to LA from SB, go clubbing and get "discovered" for a reality tv show based on their boring lives. Sound familiar? I brought this book to NY with me last weekend and the sister and aloud to each other a la SF circa 2007 when we found an old Sweet Valley High book tha...more

Jane and Scarlett are the best of friends. They've always been close and almost always understand each other. Sure, there are times when there'll be misunderstandings-like Scarlett's dating problems. But they know they have each other. L.A is a new universe to them-where natural borne blondes are nearly extinct, replaced by fakes. Jane and Scarlett know they don't fit in-somewhat gladly, in fact. But that's exactly what attracted the eye of the TV producer Trevor Lord.

L.A. Candy starts out excrutiatingly slow. Honestly, I never even cared about what was happening to any of the characters until the last 30 pages. Why did I stick with it? Because the e-book version was 209 pages. I can read 209 pages of anything. The negative points: 1.) The product placements scattered throughout the book. I swear Ms. Conrad must have scored some kind of an endorsement deal by meantioning clubs, restaurants, stores you name it. It's pretty common in the beginning of t...more
They say to write what you know. That being said, it should come as no shock that Lauren Conrad—blonde girl-next-door, self-proclaimed fashionista, and star of the first six seasons of MTV’s reality series The Hills—opens her literary career with a novel about (you’ll never guess) a blonde girl-next-door who is selected to be on a reality show.

I frickend loved this book. I saw this book at first when I was in eight grade and didn't wanna read it because I thought it was the reality show "The Hills" in a book. I was like "Why would I wanna read it when I could just watch it on t.v.?" Well, I'm really glad I picked it up because it is kinda based on the show, but in a fiction kind of way. This book is interesting in the respect that i want to find out what happens next, but I don't really care about the characters the way I should. The characters are all part of a reality show which means teh story relies quite a bit on stereotyping instead of fleshing the characters out. I don't find there is an effort to make me like/dislike any one character. The ones you are supposed to like because they are sweet and innocent, you like (or not)... The ones that you are supposed to dislike ...more
My expectations for this book were not very high, and this book didn't exactly blow them away. It was fun enough to read, and the insight to reality TV was interesting, but otherwise the book was a bit boring in places.

Belakangan suka sama Lauren Conrad entah kenapa, well maybe because practically she living my dream (at least what i want right now :p). Okay she's rich (her parents live in Laguna Beach CA), she's working in fashion industry (she design a cloth and have her own line), and now she's an author! plus she's sweet (yah setidaknya dari pengamatan saya menonton 'reality show'nya The Hills) ga macem2 dan stay focus to her career (wow she's a responsible person too..shock!)

Nineteen year-old Jane Roberts and her best friend Scarlett move to Los Angeles to break out of their shells, challenge themselves, and to “be uncomfortable”. They don’t expect much from this city of glamour and talent, yet when they are asked to star in their own reality TV show, they might just have come for what they wanted.
AT first, the whole show experience runs smoothly, and Jane and Scarlett can’t believe their luck. But then they learn that they were going to be co-stars with ...more

L.A. Candy by Lauren Conrad, in my opinion, was not as shallow as one may think it would be. It showed great insight on how the television show "The Hills" began and all of the behind the scenes aspects of it. Also, the characters from the story Jane and Scarlett, gave more depth to the characters from "The Hills," and made them easier to relate to. The stories behind the characters made me think more of them than simply "valley girl" stereotypes.

Los Angeles is all about the sweet life: hot clubs, cute guys, designer . . . everything. Nineteen-year-old Jane Roberts can't wait to start living it up. When Jane and Scarlett are approached by a producer who wants them to be on his new series, a "reality version of Sex and the City," they can hardly believe their luck. Their own show?
