Now THAT'S a book! The groove that J.K. Rowling starts to find in HP 3 is fully realized in 4. Partly it's that the kids (and therefore the readers) are getting older so she can delve into more adult, complex themes and situations, and partly it's that I think she's really finding her voice. We finally got our very own HP's, I am happy to report, and it's so funny to look at them all side by side b/c of the HUGE leap in size between 3 and 4. Then they get a little tricky b/c while 4 and 5 lo...more

Brilliant! Loved it! But, I fear that I am reading these too quickly and in rapid succession, because my dreams are laden with Potter-isms and when I close my eyes I see things like Quiddich and Wizard Chess. It reminds me of the time I played WAY too much Tetris and when I closed my eyes I would see the little cubes dropping and would mentally try to put them in the right spot!

So after suffering through the first three books of this series, I vowed never to carry on and finish it. That is, until I was at a party and two of my friends gave the Harry Potter saga such a ringing endorsement that I was convinced I was missing out. I picked up the fourth book and was determined to read it, to reconsider my stance on the series.
I quickly got through 200 pages, but it was then that I came to the same crisis I always do when reading a Harry Potter book: Do I really...more

What stands out in book 4:
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it. ...more

Still as humorous and thrilling as J.K. Rowling's last three--but adding a mixure of an intense anxiety to it makes me want to go and pick the 5th one up immediately. (Which is what I did)
I read this series when I was younger and I did not really get any of it. I just read it because the movies were so intriguing. But now only a few years' difference has given me a new love for Rowling's books. It draws me in, it is so intense, the humor makes sense to me and I know the characters be...more

Great volume of the Harry Potter series. They definitely do keep getting better and better. The plot was much more intricate and complex and less obvious than the other three books before it. I loved the whole Tri-wizard tournament was a welcome change to the setting. I really enjoyed the new characters and learning more about the magical world (port keys, forbidden curses, etc.). I also appreciate how Harry, Ron and Hermione are coming of age. They and their relationships are changing and...more

The fourth book opens as Frank Bryce, the Riddle manor's elderly caretaker, sees lights inside the abandoned house. Investigating, he overhears Lord Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail) plotting Harry Potter's death. Frank is discovered and killed; at that same moment, Harry awakes with his scar hurting and having seen the murder in his dream.
Soon after, Harry departs for the Quidditch World Cup with Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, the Weasley family and Minor Ministry officials, an...more

There's way too much packed into this book - the Quidditch tournament, the Death-Eaters, giant politics!, the Yule ball, and the Triwizard tournament all make this one overstuffed year for Harry. I guess Rowling was determined to stick to her one school year per book plan. I get exhausted just holding this doorstop of a book over the course of reading it.
But on the bright side, it's all good. I loved the Veelas, Mad-Eyed Moody, Harry being obtuse about solving the challenges (okay, he's v...more

Okay, now it's getting good. In this fourth installment, the reader starts to discern that Rowling is taking the series ultimately to a gratifying, climactic head that will be worth having read the first three volumes.
And these are just that - volumes. HP4 here clocks at 734 pages, and I see already that HP5 is 870. Guh! In this age of ADD-riddled adolescents, who has the time and patience to read a book that long? (This ADD-addled one doesn't.) But, well, this isn't the heavy stuff ...more

I haven't been as avid a reader of the Harry Potter books as most Harry Potter fans have been. I have to say though that they are getting better. The best part about Book Four is the character Mad Eye Moody. He is by far one of the most interesting and dynamic characters so far in the series. Also, there is a nice twist to this character later on in the novel. This additon to the series also displays how truly evil the Lord Voldemort character is in a way the other books had not done, which made...more

Well, what can I say, Rowling clearly fired her editor. Why else have, what have been consistently tightly woven 300 page novels suddenly sprouted into a 700 page monstrosity?
Still this book manages to remain readable, barely, because of the interesting competition at the school. Then again, I find it tiresome that there was an age restriction for the tournament and Harry magically got put into it. Yes, yes he's special, we know, okay.

This is my favorite book because it is so packed full of action that there is literally never a dull moment. From the Quidditch World Cup to the Tri-Wizard Tournament, everything moves along so fast that you get through this 700 page book in a flash. The introduction of the Death Eaters at the World Cup and then the Dark Mark really set up the return of Voldemort perfectly. The first chapter is great, learning more about the Riddles and who they are. Ron and Hermione sexual tension? Yes please! ...more

This fourth novel kept me at the edge of the seat all the time!!!!!!!! Once the tournament was announced I was craving to figure out what would Harry do at least to survive during that dangerous battle for the grand prize… I always thought Karkarof was the one to put Harry’s name in the goblet or maybe Snape, just like Sirius predicted. The end of the novel was unbelievable!!!!!!! All that time during such important event, Voldemort’s messenger was at school all the time: messing with Dumb...more

All the Harry Potter books are fantastic. Out of the series though, I cannot even rank them, I thought I could, but it's impossible, I know my favorite though. You'll have to check out all of the reviews to find which one that is. I suggest reading the books in order, all at once, especially now that all seven are out. This allows you to retain detail better, and you'll absorb everything. Then, once you finish, do it again and really take advantage of all of imagry, symbolism and hints that you ...more

This is an exclusive book to the 7 book series as the no longer young boy but teenager Harry Potter is faced with going to school again, at Hogwarts. This year isn't as pleasent as he thought it would be. This year is a very special year as 2 other schools come to compete in "The Goblet of Fire" Harry and Cedric Diggory are picked to represent Hogwarts. Harry has problems going through all the tasks, but the last one is deathly where he encounters Voldemort again.

I WANT THIS BOOK TO COUNT AS TWO!!!!!
Here is my reveiw: Harry is worried about many things, his scar hurting, and the fears of every day life. But when he finds he has been chosen to compete in a riggerous cometition to prove strength and skill, he is horrified. Problems with friends and with not being killed become hard.
