This classic series, told in rhyme, relates the adventures of the precocious Madeline. In this story, the young orphan slips and falls into the river, and is rescued by a dog. The dog is quickly adopted by Madeline and the other girls. However, when the inspectors force the dog away, Madeline and the others try to look for her. Very sweet. The illustrations vary from detailed and scenic to almost scribbles, but the children will appreciate the simplicity in design.

The Madeline books were fun for my daughter and I to read together when we had time just to ourselves.
