I'm not sure how I feel about this book. On one hand I love the message and I love David Shannon's vivid illustrations. But then again both of those things might also be this book's downfall. Camilla Cream is a little girl who worries obsessively about what others think of her and even denies liking certain things in order to fit in. And so, she is stricken with 'a bad case of stripes'. And this illness gets so much worse than the cover depicts. There is one picture that is so grotesquely lurid...more

Breaking my strict rule about avoiding David Shannon books, I checked this one out after I noticed that almost every goodreads friend I have is reading it or wants to read it. The illustrations are AMAZING. Perhaps the best I've ever seen in a picture book. The story is . . . meh. It's a little too old for Catherine, and kind of saccharine. A pretty standard version of the just-be-yourself bit.
A Bad Case of Stripes was a great book filled with colorful illustrations and silly things happening to the main character Camilla. Camilla loved lima beans but didn’t want to eat them because she didn’t want to get made fun. She woke up on the first day of school and her body was covered in stripes. She didn’t feel sick she just didn’t look quite right. She went to the doctor and she couldn’t tell her what was wrong with her so she gave her some medicine to take. The next morning she turned int...more
This quirky story about a girl named Camilla, and she worries too much about what others think of her. She loves lima beans but never eats them because she wants to fit in with everyone, and they don't like them. On her first day of school she discovers she is covered in stripes from head to toe! Even her insides have stripes but the doctor says she's healthy. While at school they change from stripes to a patriotic pattern during the National Anthem, then checkerboards, squares and spots appear...more
This book is great for teaching children to be themselves and to not worry about what other people think. The illustrations in this book are so realistic and the colors are very vibrant and attractive to read, there are so many places to look on each page. Not only does it teach kids a moral lesson but it presents it in a way that is humorous and emotional at the same time. While reading this book I felt bad for the young girl because of how much she wanted to fit in and went through all of that...more

"A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon is a fun story with a good message and vibrant illustrations. The main character, Camilla Cream, is a young girl worried about what everyone else thinks - I don't think idea is very far fetched. On her first day of school while she is trying to figure out what to wear, Camilla looks in the mirror and sees that she is covered in stripes. Of course, when the doctor can't figure out what is wrong, Camilla has to go back to school. Children at school realize...more

The story here is pretty cute, but I'm bothered by the illustrations and some of the word choices. I was happy to see a little girl not blond haired and blue eyed. Then all of the doctors, experts, and specialists were portrayed as men even though only a few are identified as male by the text. The specialists are introduced as "four people in long white coats," which could mean any combination of sexes, but the illustrations are all men.

I read this for my 4th Picture Book review. I found it on the Goodreads recommended reading list bookshelf.
I picked this book to read because a colleague of mine keeps it on display in her classroom, but I had never read it. I never knew why until now!
This book would be a great read-aloud to elementary aged students. This book would be engaging as a read aloud as children could make predictions as the story is read, as well as be soaked in by the vivid pictures.

My daughter is in 1st grade (age 6) and is TERRIFIED of this book. I realize it is very, very popular but my daughter has a great imagination and now she is very scared of eating orange, green, and blue foods. She pretty much only eats pink/red and white foods now.
We got this book as a gift from my father when she was 4 and it scared her. We asked her preschool class to put it behind other books so she wouldn't see it in the book area (if she did see it, she wouldn't go near it). In kindergarte...more

A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon is a great book to teach children that following the crowd isn't always the best thing. This book show that if you just follow everyone else and don't do what you want to do, you can become miserable. All Camilla wanted to do was eat a big plate of lima beans. She didn't do this because she was afraid her friends would make fun of her, so she pretended that she hated lima beans too. When she went against what she wanted to do she became covered in stripes....more

In this book the main girl, Camilla, is like any normal young girl. She want people to like her and is very self conscious about what people think about her. No matter what she liked, if she thought her peers would not accept her, then she will not wear the outfit or even eat the food. On the first day of school she was getting ready, then all of a sudden she came down with "a bad case of stripes". Throughout the rest of the story Camilla endures ridicule and harassment about her stripes, the st...more
A bad case of the stripes was a book very different than what I am use to reading. It is about a little girl who is always scared of what people think of her and calls her weird for liking Lima beans. She wakes up one morning with stripes all over her body, but feeling totally fine, so her parents send her to school anyway. When the kids start yelling out patterns she turns into whatever they say. So they being in doctors and experts hoping to find her cure, but they have no luck. Until a nice l...more
I enjoy reading this book. I read it every year to my new students. Camilla is so worried about fitting in with her classmates. Just like my students on the first day of school many of them fret over what school will be like. Camilla wanted to please so many people and her body begin to react to all of her thoughts in her brain. Her body became covered with so many different colors becuase she chouldnt decide on what color to wear to school. Instead of giving into what everyone else wanted she f...more

“A Bad Case of Stripes” by David Shannon, is about a girl named Camilla who wants to fit in at school. So, she does whatever people tell her to do in order to belong. She’s conscious of what she eats, dresses, and what she says. One of the main things that she won’t do is eat green lima beans even though it’s her favorite. Camilla Cream is so frustrated on the first day of school. She feels that she has many people to impress and feels that she has to look her best. In the mid of all this stress, she breaks into a bad case of the stripes. She is covered from head to toe in stripes and does not understand the reason why. The doctors check her put they cannot think what may have caused the stripes. She goes to school and is considered a distraction to the rest of the class and is asked to stay home. This is a story about a girl who gets a bad case of the stripes because she cares too much about what others think. She starts out by refusing to eat Lima beans because she doesn't think they are what other "cool kids" are eating. She tries on forty two different outfits for school because there are "so many people to impress." The next morning, she wakes ups with stripes from head to toe. She is sent to school and soon turns into anything and everything people say she might be. Several people t...more
I was surprised by this book. All the other David Shannon book are fantastic. This one had way too many words (I summarized a lot to keep the plot moving) and my kids were afraid of the illustrations. The stripes and the dots were fun in the beginning but when her skin grows funky stuff it gets a little weird. The story line was hard to catch for my 5 year old.
