I'm always amazed by short stories. There's something powerful when a writer can summarize so many intense emotions in just a few pages, and Ray Bradbury douse it beautifully.
A class of school children on Venus is eagerly waiting for the Sun to appear. It has been raining for 7 years and the scientist predicted that the Sun will come up that day for two hours. They don't remember the Sun so they don't really know what to expect, but one girl, a nine year old Margot, knows and she craves it more...more

...yes, I remember now. I read this story many years ago, when I was still just a child. I was probably younger than even the kids in this story who are all nine. I remember reading this because of the impact it left on me for the rest of my life. It's a story that is one of the only ones I remember out of those early years of my childhood. And it revolutionized my world. It introduced me to so many things. It showed me a world that was not mine, a world as foreign and alien as if I had been tru...more
I read this back in grade 6 I think, and I remember how sad I felt for Margot. I also remember that this also really hit home about consequences for our actions and how a simple I'm sorry does not or will not always suffice.

This is one of those stories that makes you want to destroy things... and by "destroy" I mean "kill." I cannot begin to tell you how much I HATE this story. Okay... I'm lying. As you can see by my rating, it's an amazing short story. It teaches you so many things! It's such a short story you wonder, "Why are there not stories written like this in novel format?" To answer your question, friends: Books today suck. But that's not why I'm here today! I'm here to rant and rave and tell you how much t...more
This short story still moves me unbearably, more than 20 years after I first read it. All the more powerful for things left unsaid.

I think the sun is a flower;
That blooms for just one hour:
This story is set in Venus, where rain falls continuously, with the exception of two hours in every seven years.
It’s a short story that only takes you a few minutes. Nonetheless, it’s powerful. Just read it.

I've always been jealous of people who can write short stories. Believe me, I've tried; but it always has to turn out to be a 14 chapter novel. The grandeur that people can capture in just a few pages always captivates me, especially when it comes to All Summer in a Day. I thought I'd never find myself reading this type of story, but it intrigued me nonetheless. Even though its setting is on the rainy Venus, it still puts out a good message to everyone.
This book was really interesting because it was a science fiction story, but it still seemed real because of the way that the author wrote it. The book was about a girl that moved from earth to Venus when she was four, and she can remember the sun, while the other children that were born on Venus can't remember it. She is sad a lot and she is always wishing that she could go back to earth someday. When the day is approaching that the scientists say is the day hat the sun will finally come out,...more
When I was 9 years old I saw the PBS adaptation of this story and it just killed me. It hit me then the way that The Lottery and Other Stories would years later. This story was one of the first times I realized that fiction could contain more truth than non-fiction. Today I came across it again and learned the title and origin.

It amazes me how Bradbury is able to convey such a great amount of emotion in such a short amount of pages. All Summer in a Day moved me greatly when I read it.
The atmosphere of the story was something that just gripped my heart. This short story felt dark and dreary. It made me feel sadness deep within my heart. The time and setting only added to the atmosphere.

Been intrigued ever since I heard Ray's interview on radio (replays were all around after his death last Tuesday. RIP Ray). It was eerie having him tell the story of he and his wife visiting this old pier in south cal and him asking her what it was doing there. (she didn't respond. He in response wrote the story about monster coming to the lighthouse mistaking its foghorn for a mating call), him writing the screenplay for Moby Dick, his love for poetry and Shakespeare, how he felt that living in...more
This story was in my third grade reading comprehension textbook. We never read it. Instead we read a trite, poorly written story about a boy who doesn't recycle.
Luckily, I had already fallen into the habit of taking home my reading comp textbook and going through it for fun. Since then, I've read numerous stories and books by Ray Bradbury, but this one remains my favorite. It is Ray Bradbury at his finest: a heartbreaking, beautiful story of humans at their best and worst, all set on the rainy...more

On planet Venus, it rains everyday, the sun shines every sun years, only for an hour or two. This is the year where the sun will shine. Margot is certain that the sun will shine, but her classmate William tells her it's not gonna happen. Margot doesn't believe him and she ignores his bad comments. Later, William can't take Margot's positivity so he locked her in the closet. Then the kids went outside in the sunshine and forgot about Margot.

I have been trying to remember the title and author of this story for years, the recent Venus transit got me thinking about it again and today I found it. Yay!!!When I realized it was one of Ray Bradbury's stories - I thought to myself "of course." I think I first read this in middle school and maybe saw the 80's TV movie. I would love to see a new adaptation of this story. It is pretty amazing to me that Ray Bradbury died the same day as the Venus Transit. I wonder if he got to see any of it? A...more

Fabulous little short story. There have been numerous comparisons to Ponies which I believe are a fair comparison, although I didn't enjoy Ponies nearly as much as this one. I feel this was due to the only major difference being the lack of remorse for actions made (in Ponies).
Thanks for another good one, Wendy. :)

One of Bradbury's best short stories, this one came to be re-printed often as it is imaginative, poignant and still fun to read. Taking the premise that the characters of the story are on a planet where it rains constantly, and the sun shines in only one day, revealing instantly blossoming plants, and equally blooming spirits of the children, the images Bradbury creates become archetypal for his brand of narrative. Short and sweet, just like the flowers on Venus, this is one of Bradbury's best,...more
Ray Bradbury passed away Tuesday night, and his grandson had this to say about the author's work: "...his stories lifted people up and saved them from lonely summers. Who among us was never buried deep in a Bradbury story, lost in his meticulously yet effortlessly crafted metaphor?" (i09)
In four pages, All Summer In A Day speaks eloquently about hope, power, cruelty and injustice. Or in other words, people can be jerks and life isn't always fair.

Poor, sick little Margot. She is the only child on Venus who can remember Earth and the Sun. The sun is predicted to come out (for the first time in seven years) and all the children are excited, but they bully Margot because she knows more about the sun. They stuff her into a closet and forget about her until the two-hours that the sun is out are gone. Margot couldn't see the sun, and her health was suffering from Venus' climate (it always rained). The book ends with the children who bullied he...more
I read this in my 7th grade English class and it has stayed with me ever since. It pops into my brain and I just can't let go of it. I finally decided to hunt it down a bit ago, and was happy to find it was written by a prolific and popular science fiction author, making it easy to locate and rediscover. Although it's never the same, both because reality can never live up to a built-up memory and because the adult perspective is so much different than that of a 12 year old one. Still worth a rea...more
Such a short and heart-wrenching story. Imagine living somewhere where it rained 24/7 for seven years straight and for two hours every seven years, the sun would come out. This story tells the story of a little girl from Earth, who remembers the sun but has lived on Venus for the last five years, and desperately misses the sun like a wilted flower.

I've read this short story several times over the years. It was one of those stories we HAD to read in high school, and then I read because I wanted to years later. The first time I read it, I thought it was one of the most tragic and heartbreaking stories I'd ever read... Especially because I was one of those "outsiders" in school, I totally felt for the protagonist.
I recommend this story to anyone. A social commentary, it is. (sorry, I'll put the Yoda ears away now.)

I read this several years ago, but it is just beautiful and so, so sad. I actually love the rain, so rain all the time actually sounds like a lovely thing to me. But, I know, not everyone feels as I do. It's a heartbreaking story. I'm not really a sci-fi person, so much of Bradbury's work is simply beyond me, but this will always resonate in me. It causes heartache and yearning, sadness and even some anger. It's absolutely beautiful, too beautiful for words, really.
Oh my god, how beautiful.
Strange thing is, I've been thinking about writing a story about a little girl, and I just couldn't make it sound right. I was about to postpone it or give up, and just at the right moment, I came across this. I think I'm ready to try again.
This is a story I'm sure I'll be reading again and again. It's so so beautiful. Fills your heart with love and wonder and hope and sadness.
I wish I could write something like that too.

This book thalks about how kids lived in Venus and it rained every single day. The sun only comes out in each 7 years and for only 1 hour. A girl named Margert was born on earth and loved the sun. Then one day scientist said that the sun was goining to come out, but a boy named William said mean things and said it was a joke and lock her in a colset. But the sun really came out, everyone had a great time outside but after 2 hours the rain came back and they remembered that Margert was in the col...more
I first read this story in 7th grade. It was one of the first science fiction stories I ever read and I was fascinated by the novelty. But what really drew me in was the displaced school girl that hated where she was. It summed up my sentiments to a T. Intentionally or unintentionally, Bradbury captured the heart of being a third culture kid. Reading this in 7th grade was like looking into a magic mirror. I was trapped on Venus and severely missed my sun.
This is a short story about a girl that lives on Venus-a planet where it always rains and you only see the sun every 7 years. Well, that time has come but the other kids play a prank on her an lock her in a closet and forget about her. After them playing in the sun for an hour, it rains so they go back inside. They then remember they locked the girl. They then let her go, after she missed the sun.
This was really good, I just wished it was longer.

I thought the story was very unique and well written and you really sympathize with Margot. The story was q very quick and unique read. Bradbury did a great job in describing the setting in great detail without making it boring or unnecessary. I also think the characters were well developed. And this was my third time reading it. Although I think it deserves more of a 4.5 I'm not going to downgrade it to 4 stars.
