A spooky and humane classic.
Our young orphan Krabat apprentices at a mill, which turns out to be a magic school far more sinister than Hogwarts.
Essentially a fairy tale, the story resonates on many levels.
One of the things I love about it is the way Ottfried Preussler portrays the world of magic as having limits. The powerful and despotic master at the mill has his own master in turn...The logic of the story is carefully constructed, and every action and development has consequences.

As I'm rereading my favorite books from childhood, I find myself having to reset my rating system. After reading The Satanic Mill, for instance, I see that some other books I noted as 5 stars are really 4, and some 4 stars are really 3.
This book is flat out good. For a book about good and evil it's free of saccahrine and moralizing. Economically written and tightly plotted, there aren't anvils falling on your head indicating where the story is going.

I read this book when i was about 14 yrs old or so. i remember this book being my first intriuging, magical suspence novel. The main character was a young boy (don't remeber his name) that had a dream of a mill, and ended up there, where he met with a wizzard. He then followed the wizzard to the mill (under some form of spell as i can recall). While there, he befriends an older boy, who helps him with the daunting tasks that the evil wizzard commands of him and the other boys. He also meets a yo...more

I recently reread my tattered copy of this beautiful retelling of the sorbic myth about the powerful magician (?) Krabat - I'm still as in love with it as I was when I first read it. Preußler's amazingly simple and yet beautiful prose does exactly what it should do; clearly, there's a master at work here. He skillfully sets the mood for this tale of a boy growing up, from the first sentence to the last - the story is exciting, but at the same time it feels like home, because we all know this way...more

First published in English under the title The Satanic Mill, this German children’s classic (translated by Anthea Bell) has now been reissued under its original title as part of The Friday Project's Library of Lost Books range. It is the story of Krabat, a boy in 16th-century Saxony, who investigates a strange mill and finds himself compelled to become the miller’s apprentice, working alongside his eleven journeymen. The Master teaches his journeymen dark magic, but at a price: every New Year’s...more

Doch was soll er da?

I was sad to learn that Otfried Preußler died this year, so I felt like rereading Krabat, which is one of my favourite books. It is a fine piece of story telling that turned a 17th century Sorbian tale into a dark, mystical adventure which is probably best read by torch light under a blanket.
The book's language and the way in which the story is told make it appear much older than it actually is, which adds to the book's mystical atmosphere. I particularly like about the story, that Preußler does...more

I remember when I first picked up this book: it was 2011 or so, I was visiting the little town of Letham in north-east Scotland. My grandmother and I were visiting an old local closing-down bookshop which was selling various hardbacks and paperbacks for around £1 each. I can't recall anything else I bought but I can recall seeing the cover and becoming instantly fascinated.

I recently finished reading a translated version of this book, 'The Curse of the Darkling Mill' that a friend sent to me as a book that she still remembered clearly from childhood, that had made a big impression on her.
Echoing a lot of the comments on here, this isn't a straight-up children's book. The economical prose and simple language, and the lack of any explicit scenes is the only thing that marks it out as being for children.

One of the gems of my childhood bookshelf, translated in Dutch as 'Master of the Black Mill'.
This book is fantastic, I won't go too much into the story because the arc of finding out what's going on is just lovely and I recommend discovering it for yourself, be you youngster or grown-up.

Excellent German language classic. It teaches you a lot of lessons on how to live life. I'm sure there already are lots of excellent analyses, so I don't need to add.
Ich selber...more
I found this book enjoyable, especially reading it aloud with my family. I thought that it was fairly mature for a book found in the childrens section (though it was in the stacks, which are available to the public to browse, but a bit out of the way). There are a lot of different characters at least 16 different odd German (Wendish) names to remember, though only about five or six are really memorable. Although there is only one female character of note in the book I didn't actually find it too...more

Reading German again proved to be a bit getting used to, but in all I think it was worth reading it in the original language.
Krabat is a good book, obviously aimed at children, but good nevertheless (or even better because of that). The story is plain, but a bit different from most stories. Somehow it feels reversed. Where normally a pact with the devil is a final battle or a lingering proposition, in here it is the onset of the story; What if that pact is already made?

A splendid story of the lure of power and subsequent disavowal of it for love. Quite gripping and an easy page turner. It did feel dated, in language and syntax and the isolation of the internal world. I understand it was a repring and a translation, so jolly welldone to the Friday Project for keeping the original feel of it.

Send to me by a German friend for Christmas, but am just now in the right frame of mind to launch into this book. I was quite surprised to see the English translation of the name as the translation I received was simply called Krabat.

Following the Goodreads recommendations looked for Krabat to meet me at the begin in a strange story ... an orphan who is called to an old mill. The story at first I thought it would be something like a terror to children ... but the children's terror easily transforms into a fairy tale.
