I think Of Wind And Sand is a very believable take on how humans would react to another planet's inhabitants; there's a lot of emphasis on the inevitability of things going wrong. Dartzls (giant, desert-dwelling lizards) are very different from humans and the story follows various characters' attempts to bridge the enormous, mistrust-ridden species gap. Dartzls are more than just the enemies of humans -- they're richly developed as a race, and the reader gets to see into their day-to-day culture...more
