I was bored to oblivion in my grandmother's summer home, lying on a cot, looking at a wall of books, none of them had colorful or pretty covers. In fact, most of the covers had nothing but gray and maybe an abstract drawing. My grandmother was a book editor and did not believe in pretty covers, it was all about what was inside. I was about nine, and my first books had been Greek myths (Pegasus' tale was of course my favorite, a little girl dreaming of winged horses). There was nothing in the cov...more

“Seeking Elusive Happiness”

Maeterlinck’s quaint 1911 play about two children searching for ht bluebird of happiness—amidst a cast of hundreds—seems saccharine by contemporary standards. Still insightful readers may discern some underlying themes which remain valid in our high-tech world. Young Tyltyl and his wimpering sister, Mytyl, are commissioned by an old Fairy to find Happiness during a nocturnal journey throughout various enchanted realms. Even though it was all probably just a dream th...more

My edition, found at a local used bookstore, is "The Blue Bird: A Fairy Play in Five Acts and Eleven Scenes", which was published in 1919 by Dodd, Mead & Company. Original copyright, 1907.

The play's presumption of man's mastery and ownership of all things in nature would direct like a modern-day ecologist's nightmare.

I wish I had never let this one go - that I has held to it the way I had when I was five. At least now I have found it again.

A re-read. I want to direct it. It's still fantastic!

fantastic play. one of the best fairy tales i've ever read. it even has a fairy in it, and a talking dog, and a asshole of a cat.

This was a very interesting thing for me to read. I really enjoyed that it was written as a script and I really connected to the characters. It was a bit slow getting in to but the end is good and the whole thing is well written. I think anyone who love's play's or scripts as much as I do!
