Straight from the bestseller lists in the UK comes a novel "full of belly laughs and painfully acute observations" (The Independent on Sunday), an excursion into the world of a modern male that "delivers its punch lines directly to the heart" (Birmingham Evening Mail). Like Helen Fielding's smash success Bridget Jones and Nick Hornby's classic High Fidelity , Mr. Commitme...more

This is only my second foray into lad lit, so I'm not sure yet quite how to evaluate it. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Do I like it better than chick lit? Yes, but that may be because it's new for me. I do like seeing the story from the male perspective (and not just from the male character but from a male author.)

The story starts with the hero and his lady love in a 4-year relationship. She's ready to get married, so she proposes. He loves her, but he's happy with things as they are. His motto:...more

Though I am a huge fan of Mike Gayle and absolutly adore everything he writes, this one was just not my cup of tea.
Mike Gayle is always my way into the male brain. He gives chick-lit a whole new dimension by showing us woman how men react and think. I even tested it a few times on my husband and multiple times he reacted like the characters in the book. Its like chick-lit, but a little deeper and more "real life". Where most of the chick-lit novels seem to have a happy ending with princes on whi...more

I thoroughly enjpyed this novel for whatever reason. Mike Gayle is likely lesser known that Nick Hornby, but seemingly very similar. Novel is about a man that struggles with the idea of moving from boyfriend zone to husband zone. There should be a name for this type of genre, I suggest "brit lit."

After four years in love Duffy's girlfriend puts the pressure on him to take the ultimate plunge....marriage.

I was curious about this book because it's British Chic Lic- but written by a male. I was hoping he'd bring something fresh and new to the genre but it was pretty much the same as a marian keyes- (slightly less sex though). It was light and I even thought it was funny in some parts. I was a little dissapointed that there was no diversity in the characters though, especially since the auth...more

I am a fan of Mike Gayle and the way he brings a different outlook to chick lit. I always find it interesting to read a males perspective on things and it really sets a different tone as to how girls see things. This book was about a man not ready to comment, afraid that it will only change how good things were going. He felt that marriage is not necessarily needed as long as you are happy with how things are. I actually agreed with the way he was seeing things and felt like his girlfriend was j...more

I really like reading chick-lit and this time round I went for the male version of it. I'm pretty sure it isn't called bloke-lit, but as far as the content and fun goes it really is chick-lit from a male perspective.
Mike Gayle offers both male and female readers a fantastic read which, even more so, is very insightful (from the female perspective) and more than just a little laughter inducing without going over the top. While I heard that his first novel My Legendary Girlfriend is apparently his...more

This book is just ok. It is not rubbish and it is not brilliant, it is slap bang in the middle. The story chugs along steadily but there are no real highs or lows and there is a real sense of get on with it because you know what the ending will be right from the start. I thought the characters were in general good, although the lead character was a bit annoying and i kept wanting to tell him to get a grip. The humour was nothing special with a lot of cliches. Overall though it did have a nice fe...more

It's January 2nd 2011 and I have made two piles of all my books, 'read' and 'to read' so they can all be listed on Goodreads, I put this on the 'read'' pile and then came to enter it, and can't be sure if I have...maybe I have started it and not finished it?
The reviews I have just skimmed through don't fill me with a great desire to begin on this, but no doubt I will give it a go. Think it actually belongs to my daughter, which worries me more..how long have I had it?

God, people, it's called "dick lit." And it has been called that for quite a while.

I enjoyed the book, but I think I'm getting over reading about emotionally stunted men. Since I'm no longer involved with one, everything feels like whining and excuses to me. That's not to say Gayle doesn't write a good book--I always enjoy his writing--but I no longer enjoy reading about men and women who sabotage themselves.

I've been reading a lot of Gayle's books in the last couple months. Though I enjoy his "lad lit", I'm glad this is the last I have of his to read. Though I like his style, they are starting to sound the same. So I need a break.

Having said that, I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it.

Tried this author again but just can't get into it. Another story of a guy feeling sorry for himself the whole time. 'My Legendary Girlfriend' was about a guy that couldn't get over his ex for most of the book so he was sad and sorry for himself the whole time. "Mr. Commitment" was about a guy who is scared of commitment so when he refuses his partners proposal she breaks up with him so he feels sad and sorry for himself for much of the book... I was planning on reading "Turning Thirty" next by...more

Commitment is hard. faced with it, people tend to do crazy things to get them out of a situation they don't want to be in. this book was a great and light read with moments when you thought you were the one making the decision not the character in the book. <3ed it!

Love love love love LOVE this book!! Mike Gayle takes you straight into the mind of a man struggling with commitment. I think most any man would be able to relate and even us girls find ourselves laughing and nodding our heads at it. READ THIS BOOK!!!

Mike Gayle is a good writer but this story feels unoriginal and the main character, Duffy, is not that likeable - whiny and addicted to TV.

Ben loves Mel, but isn't ready to commit. Isn't that the standard for romantic comedies everywhere? If you like those chick flicks (and/or something along the lines of High Fidelity), you just might enjoy this book as I did.

This book is okay for me. A good book for ones who wanna read the romantic-comedy. :)
Mike's writing is interesting but I just feel so-so about the storyline, lol. :D
Anyway, let's be chill out with " Mr. Commitment" !

My first Mike Gayle book.. and I think it was a great read. It was funny, sweet and for me was a 'realistic' romance novel. The main character, Duffy, really did remind me of Bridget Jones. A great read, light hearted and well written. The only flaw this novel has is.... None! :)

I liked this author's book, TURNING THIRTY, but for some reason, I struggled quite a bit with this one and couldn't make it halfway through before I lost interest entirely in the central characters.

I thought this was a really cute novel! It's funny and endearing and great to read at a coffee shop or sitting by the fire with hot cocoa. Duffy is such a likable guy and Mel is the most patient and understanding woman I have ever read, short of Mother Theresa! This is a nice, light and quick read and a great pick me up on rainy days.

Really like it...

Tapi emang gak nyangka kalo lika liku sebelum meritnya kudu kek gitu... Emang kek gimana? Yaaa, baca sendiri deh ya.

Btw, emang salah ya, ngundang mantan pacar ke resepsi perkawinan? Itu kisah si Dan lumayan heboh. Separah apa sih putusnya tu percintaan? Sampe sampe pas dateng ke perkawi...more

This book had me laughing out loud! Mike Gayle is a great writer and the dialogue he presents are some of the funniest I've read. I can't wait to read more of his novels!

Entretenida.
Mr. Carney
Funny at times and quite insightful but a bit too predictable. Very similar to his other books, which isn't neccessarily a bad thing. Passes a couple of hours.

British chick lit, but written by a man. There are a variety of terms for this, each weirder than the last. I read a lot of escapist trashy fiction this year.
Eleanor
didnt enjoy this one quite as much as turning thirty, however it did still have me laughing out loud and at one point almost made me cry with laughter.
Nancy
Thrift store find. There were some funny analogies, but also a lot of clichés. I think it would make for an appropriate poolside/beach read.
Brigitte
Read all of Mike Gayle's novels! They're funny, well written and you can't drop it once you've started, rather like Pringles!

Pens...more

“People always go on about how fantastic relationships are in the beginning, and of course everyone hates relationships when they end, but what about the middles? the middles where you know everything there is to know. Where you can look at the person you love and know what they're thinking, see something on the telly and know how they'd react; When you know exactly what they'd wear to come round and see you.” 7 people liked it
