Uwe Timm has courage enough for talking about his older brother, Karl Heinz, died during the Russian campaign of the German army in World War II when the novelist was just a child.
It's not an easy choice. The risk was pretty clear: writing an elegy on a 19 years old boy sent to death by a regime without having any bad intention from his own, but just obeying to orders.
Timm doesn't justify his brother at all.

Even if the eternal Nazi time theme is exhaustingly often written about in German literature, this is actually a good novel about it. It's about a man who had been only a little boy during the war deals with the things his big brother who was in the German army "Wehrmacht" might or might not have done.
A very insightful and personal - but never pathatic - account on the writer's brother, who was a member of the SS during the Second World War. A small but gripping and thoughtful book about the Nazi period, in which the writer (Timm) is convincing - but never too easy - in exploring the role of an ordinary SS soldier and the responsibility of ordinary people for the functioning of Nazi Germany.

In this book Uwe Timm showed his older brother, who died in Ukraine in 1943 as SS-Totenkopf-Division soldier. Timm waited till he was the only person from the family - he knew that his parents will try to stop him from writing and that a close relative that served in SS should stay a family secret. Uwe Timm was 3 years old, when Karl-Heinz died, so they weren't able to do many things that siblings usually do. Great book.
Boring.
His strongest book.
