Following his graduation from University College, De Verteuil was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in Ireland in 1962. After a short period of missionary work in Nigeria, he returned to Trinidad where he taught at his alma mater, St. Mary's College, from 1963 until his retirement in 1992.
