Aside from the obvious topic of the theatre, theatricality, and the Eastern Ontario navel-gazing I've come to expect from Hood, this is a book about nothing. There is a gentle, meandering, but determined plot that pulls a conclusion together, the characters develop somewhat as time goes on, and essentially you would have no reason to read this book unless you were somewhat familiar with Hood's New Age Cycle, or a particularly dogged fan of good writing. There are great moments in this one; in fact the whole first chapter is one of the best set-pieces in the entire series. But then the boring talk gets out of hand again. What was he thinking narrating an amateur dramatic competition as a dramatic denouement? No, no, no. Unless it's irony, of course. The ironies (Gollies, I hate irony!) are flowing fast and furious in this one.
