Written by sibling descendents of Pacific Northwest pioneers, this brief hardbound book offers glimpses of early Northwest Native culture, early days of the area's white settlers, and their politics. This review offers a rating of only two stars as the stories of twelve featured women are in some ways weak and leave the reader wishing for more - or less - detail. Patience leads to finding some buried treasure, and other highlights come in the form of the Introduction, maps, and sporadic editor's ...more

I stumbled across this book while leaving the Hoh Rainforest a weekend ago. I mentioned to the shopkeeper that we would be cooking our dinner on Rialto Beach and she proceeded to tell me a little about the history of the area...and showed me a house that used to be built near La Push within sight of where we would be cooking out. So the twins and I were with my Mom on Hurricane Ridge during the summer of 2010. Next to the cafe where we were eating, right inside the gift shop, Glynda Schaad and another woman involved in this book were autographing copies! So I bought one. I'm pleased to add it to my History collection, and look forward to reading it.

Some interesting history, the but biographies were shallow. Perhaps very little is known of these women, but the authors did little more than let us know that these women existed and did certain things. Educated, but what did that mean? Artist, but no photos of their work. Lots of divorces, but how did that come about? No heart. Print was too small. Photos were interesting.

I loved this book! I wish it had been longer, however. Some of the stories overlapped and it wasn't always clear when one had ended and another began, but I think this was faulty editing. It was very helpful for the research I was doing for my thesis project.
