This book picked me up and didn't put me down until weeks after I had read it, lying in my room at night fantasizing about being in that position, having that lover, being Owen, or Paul, or Laura, or Ben. The amazing plotline, so detailed and intricate. I had no difficulties believing that this might happen. I felt all the anger and dissappointment and pain when the court verdict was announced. This is by far my favorite book by the Judith Michael combination. If you are in for an amazing piece...more
I was a teenager when this book came out, and it was one of my mom's beach reads. I read it, because I read EVERYTHING I could get my hands on, and am still obsessed with the drama and grandness of this story. Any woman who loves an amazing story of love, work, family, drama, and redemption will love this story.
And I don't agree that it's too long. I think it's well crafted, structurally, and can't imagine any sections or parts of the story being omitted. And their writing style is clean and int...more

Judith Michael is a husband/wife team who wrote Inheritance together. It is 695 pages in paperback and it will keep you turning the pages.
The plot is solid. The characters are well drawn. It is a a rich vs. poor story but the protagonist has the ambition to be a big player in the hotel empire that she deserves. Obviously, this is a beach book with no lasting substance--but a good read.

This is a saga of a family pitted against an orphan and of a woman's fight to recover her reputation. A household help to the Salingers befriends the family patriarch and when he dies she inherits. The family contests the will and wins, uncovering the secret Laura has hidden for years.[return]perhaps a little long (748 pages), nevertheless this was a decent "beach read" kind of book - woman overcomes adversity through hard work to find true love and the business she always wanted.[return][return...more

overlong but a good story
A little long but an interesting story. This is an old book I read years ago and just finished reading again.
Definitely FICTION! A book about love and loss, families-their hidden secrets and sins, mentoring, success and failure, wealth and poverty,
lies, betrayal and romance. There are characters you'll love and those you will detest.

It was a book I picked up along the way
I like the plot. Anything about a woman making her way in the world of business is a winner with me. I enjoyed the slow down speed up pacing of the book. Also, I am a sucker for 80's beach reads very good at cleansing the palate.
I totally enjoyed this book. It had the exact right cadence and flow for me. To me this is my perfect type of book. I like books set in this time period that involve the aristocrat. The story had just enough twists to keep me interested to the very end. It is a book I did not want to come to an end. I must go find another book to read from this author!
