This turned out to be an interesting read, with compelling characters and a convincing political plot. I found Woods' storytelling enjoyable and fast-paced.
Having said all that, I would have given this a higher rating, but as I was reading it, I got the slightest impression that either (a) I had perhaps seen a movie based on this novel or (b) I had maybe already read it - either way, I predicted a few too many plot twists before I was through :(

Will Lee returns to his Georgia roots for a crack at being United States Senator. At the same time a hate group called the Elect has sprung up and is actively enforcing their brand of morality with deadly consequences. Unbeknownst to Lee his vying for office has crossed purposes with the Elect's master plan.
This is an early book by Woods and he uses too much gimmickery and unfair leaps/coincidences to keep the reader believing the plot line but an ok if undemanding read.

Years ago Stuart Woods pissed me off and so I have ignored his books. Finally I decided to try again. I got to the half way mark in this one and was then smacked in the face with extremely offensive homophobia on the part of all of the characters. The end for me. Yuck.
I have read 3 or 4 WIll Lee novels by Stuart Woods and liked them. I greatly enjoyed this one because it tells the story that I had heard referenced in all the other books about WIll Lee. It was nice to read the story of Larry Moody firsthand.
A very satisfying chunky read. A young guy running for senate at the same time as he defends a guy accused of murder. Lots of shady characters trying to stop our guy from winning his senate seat. Page turning stuff that kept me engrossed. I shall look for more of Stuart Woods' books.
Probably one of the best books and authors that I have read in years. I can't wait to read another Stuart Woods book! I am not going to comment on the book's content because I wouldn't want to give anything away! READ IT!
Lots of twists and turns. Realistic look at what can go wrong (or right) in a campaign for political office. I just plain like this character, Will Lee.
I really liked this one too. Why is it that Woods can keep up the quality of the Will Lee novels and not the Stone Barrington ones?
The story of Will Lee's early days in politics. Made into a miniseries.
Good book but too much like reading the paper. Good story line.
Fun reading. I am on a roll with Stuart Woods' Will Lee character.
The story here was really good, but I'm giving it 4 stars because the reader was weird, after a while though I got used to it.
I enjoyed the political insight aspects of this mystery
Great..looking for more of his work
Book #47 read in 2010
Another wonderful Stuart Woods novel. Can't wait to read the next in the Will Lee series.
Fiction
Love it
I really loved this book! It was written in 1989 but was extremely relevant considering the recent election. I wish we had more candidates like Will Lee who were strong enough to take on Fundamentalist nuts. The group in this novel was strikingly similar to the Tea Party - just plain nutters. Stuart Woods mastered the political speeches in this one!
Such a great book in the readability area and a greawt story of the world of Political intrigue. It is a great story and will keep your attention.-

Stuart Woods' books are a bit formulaic, but I like his ones featuring Will Lee.
Excellent! Gripping, spine tingling, political thriller.
