I hadn't gotten too far into it when something started to seem very familiar....

And not just with surface appearances. The story of Olivia itself could be the older sister of the 80s teen fluff-fests that were the Sunfire line. Riefe's novels came first and it's probably only coincidence that they seem so similar. Or perhaps not. Maybe it was only a formula/format that was in circulation at the time and it was used across genres.
