This was pretty good.

I didn't mind the heroine, wasn't too found of the "mysterious" (notice the quotes) hero. The story was a little choppy and I didn't feel any sort of attachment or curiousity about the other "NY Girlfriends" that appearently each have a book in this series.

I enthusiastically read through this book in record time, but now that I'm done I'm not suer why I read through it with such gusto.

I do think I will investigate more books by Erin McCarthy. I don't think she can hold a fl...more

I was not sure that I would like a book about a girl who gets pregnant by one guy and then ends up falling in love with someone else. This is the whole concept behind this book. However, somewhere in between is a very sweet love story between two people who are meant to be together.
Mandy is a very likable character and Damien is one sexy man. Together they create a lot of heat together. I really enjoyed this book a lot. It is going on my keeper shelf.

Mandy Keeling is pregnant with another man's baby when she falls in love with her boss, Damien 'Demon' Sharpton. There was virtually no plot in the whole book and I could not wait to put it down. I would strongly recommend avoiding this selection.

The Pregnancy Test was a generally entertaining and enjoyable read that was mostly light, sexy fun. The hero does carry a pretty big secret that is revealed in bits and pieces throughout the story and toward the end, it becomes a little weightier as he deals with issues from his past. Otherwise it is a fairly breezy tale that has a hint of a Sex and the City vibe with an underlying plot about four girlfriends who share an apartment in New York, as well as all the details of their lives. In fact, based on reviews, it seems that a number of readers mistakenly thought this book was chick-lit, only to be disappointed and/or scandalized by the racy content. While it does have a certain chick-lit quality to it, in my opinion, The Pregnancy Test is still solidly grounded in the romance genre, and I can't say that I've ever heard of Erin McCarthy's books being categorized as anything else but romance. As an aside, the cover blurb for this book makes it sound like it is written in first-person point-of-view, so I was somewhat surprised to discover that it's not.

At less than 250 pages, The Pregnancy Test was a pretty quick read that I thought could have benefited from being a little longer. I liked that the hero and heroine had know each other for two months before their tryst in the Caribbean, but during that time they rarely saw each other in person with most of their communications taking place via text messaging and e-mail. I thought it was a rather neat way to build a relationship, because it was virtually all based on them being attracted to each other's personalities and intellect rather than just looks, which is something I really appreciate. However, the whole two-months worth of interactions took place during a scant single chapter, that didn't really create enough of an emotional connection between the characters to suit me. The book is very fast-paced, but the first two-thirds or so seemed almost rushed to me. I just found myself wishing that things would slow down a bit, so that I could savor the moment. When Damien and Mandy begin to realize that they have feelings for one another is the point when I thought the story developed a little more depth.

Damien is a very appealing hero, who we are led to believe at the beginning, is an ogre of a boss who scares away all of his executive assistants. It becomes quickly apparent though that he is mostly just a workaholic who uses his job to hide from the pain of the past. I thought that the circumstances of his first marriage and especially what happened to end it were rather unique and not something I've come across yet in my romance reading, but the experience quite understandably left Damien very cold and lonely. I really liked that he had been celibate for three years and hadn't been with anyone since his wife. In my opinion, it showed that he was more of a relationship kind of guy and not just one who was into casual flings, and to me, it made his time with Mandy more special because she was the one with whom he wanted to end both his emotional and sexual drought. I also loved that Damien barely batted an eyelash when Mandy told him she was pregnant, and if anything, it made her all the more attractive to him, even though the baby wasn't biologically his. I really like when romance heroes still find their pregnant wives or girlfriends sexy, because that's a time when many women tend to feel unattractive. I thought it was cute that after reading Mandy's pregnancy book, Damien was trying to be so gentle with her, practically treating her like she was a china doll and thinking he might hurt her. Even though it practically drove Mandy to distraction, his attentiveness to her pregnancy was very sweet too. In my opinion, it showed that he was ready to step up to the plate and be a father to her baby in every way that counts. I also enjoyed that Damien wanted to take their lovemaking slow and savor every bit of Mandy for as long as he could. What woman wouldn't want a guy like that?

I really liked Mandy too. She had grit and determination to throw her ex-boyfriend's offer of money to never bother him with the baby again, back in his face, sell her dream business, and then apply for a job with a guy who had been dubbed “Demon” by everyone in the office, while in the throes of morning sickness. She is also a very intuitive heroine, anticipating Damien's every need as his assistant and recognizing the pain in his eyes almost from the moment she meets him. I loved that when Damien's secret comes out, she stands by him completely, sympathizing and never doubting him even for a moment. Mandy starts out the story with her own secret, trying to hide her pregnancy from Damien, at first so he'll hire her and later so that he won't fire her. Yet the moment Damien started pursuing her on their trip to the Caribbean, she told him the truth immediately, leaving no room for silly misunderstandings which was a big relief. I thought it was also rather amusing and different to have Mandy be the one who was being more sexually aggressive, while Damien was trying to take things slow. Mandy is also a somewhat unique heroine in that she was born and raised in Britain but now living in New York. I'm sure it's probably more common than I think, but I can't say that I've run across a main character yet in my reading of contemporary romances who was a native of another country, residing in the US. I was also really impressed with the author's use of a number of British colloquialisms in both Mandy's dialog and thoughts.

While the author may have added some unusual elements to this story and thankfully avoided any “big misunderstandings,” she did unfortunately still fall into the romance cliche of the hero and heroine fighting their feelings for one another. Mandy doesn't think that she should get seriously involved with anyone because of the baby, and Damien thinks that he can't have a real relationship because of his past. Although each of them had some decent reasons, I still thought they protested a little too much, and this kind of push-and-pull can be a little irritating to me. I think I just have a preference for characters who simply lay their hearts on the line. I'm also not a big fan of relationships that begin with sex-only agreements. It's a plotline that's just too predictable, and I always know where it's going to end up. Not to mention, as I've said many times before in other reviews, I simply prefer for the hero and heroine to be in love or well on their way before making love. That said though, Damien's aforementioned celibacy and their more-than-skin-deep attraction did make it more palatable for me, and I can't deny that the love scenes were very steamy and well-written. The Pregnancy Test may not have been a perfect read for me, but the characters were certainly enjoyable. Overall, it was a pleasant distraction with many things to like about it. The Pregnancy Test is the first book in the NY Girlfriends series. The second book in the series is You Don't Know Jack which features Jamie, one of Mandy's roommates, as the heroine. So far these are the only two books in the series, and Ms. McCarthy's website indicates that the series has been suspended for now. I had previously read one short novella by Erin McCarthy that I greatly enjoyed, but this was the first of her full-length novels I've tried. Since I had an agreeable reading experience with both, I am definitely open to continuing the series and trying more of her works in the future. (less)

I absolutely love this book. I liked the concept since I am a big fan of boss/employee falling in love stories. This book was very interesting. It had a great little mystery about Damien who happened to be a wonderful hero in my perspective. He was hot, mysterious, kind, generous, and I felt so bad for all the things he had to go through. 3.5 stars. Nicely done. I liked it.

A few scenes had me chuckling. Both characters are likeable. I enjoyed Mandy’s competence and efficiency at work. I loved Damien’s involvement with the pregnancy. He read more pregnancy books than she did. When she was getting an ultrasound, she asked the technician a question, but Damien gave the technical answer. A minor occurrence happens at the very end which totally surprised and delighted me. Lovely ending.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that there was no awful "misunderstanding" or hidden motives in this love story. Nobody was tricked or had any excuses to throw a fit or break up just to prove a point. Again, another 5 star book!! I absolutely love Erin McCarthy, her writing is so fun to read. Her books have laugh out loud humor, sexy love scene(very tastefully done) and a good story. This is a book where I think it was extremely important to copy the book description into my review. The reason for this is because this is a book where the book is NOT what is as advertised. Not saying that is a bad thing in this case but the story was NOTHING like I expected it to be. I thought this would be a light chick lit read about a British girl in New York, classic chick lit by the way, who finds herself pregnant with the guy not wanting the baby and from there the sillyness begins. Well that is sort of what happens but what I didn't expect was all the graphic sex scenes. I mean this was Harlequin romance all the way under the disguise of a chick lit cover. And again that isn't a bad thing....unless that isn't what you are looking for in a book....and some people aren't. This book is a very quick read about Mandy and her boss Damien falling in love very quickly but during that process most of what you read is them having sex...and in very graphic terms. I wanted to make sure that I reviewed this book because it certainly wasn't what I expected and I haven't read this author before. I'm not a prude and the sex scenes don't bother me but if they bother other readers I wanted to post a review that those readers could learn that this isn't a Shopoholic type book at all. Close but sex sex sex. So as always....don't read a book by its cover or description apparently because I did not expect it to be so Harlequin like. If it weren't so cliched and had a better story line it would have had higher ratings for me, but I just couldn't because I am having buyers remorse and it just wasn't the type of book I thought I was buying. I liked the story but wanted better writing and less sex filler. 3 stars.(less)

Ack! I now officially know WAY more about pregnancy than I ever wanted to know! I laughed. I cringed. I loved every second of it. McCarthy just writes a fantastic book no matter the subject. Loved the main characters, the humor and how she managed to make the storyline of the heroine being pregnant with one guy and ending up with another one actually work.

Mandy and Damien were wonderful. Damien is just a fantastic guy even if he hides it pretty damn well and has a rep for being an ogre at work. Then there's Mandy with her tremendous spunk and courage. Standing on her own two feet, embracing her baby and doing whatever it takes to make a life for them despite the absolute schmuck of a father. Mandy and Damien fit together so nicely. He's rather demanding, impatient and has ogre tendencies but she doesn't take any of his crap and usually manages to turn it around on him when he tries to provoke her at work. Doesn't let it bother her and can see the man underneath the front he puts on. Always a fan of the hero meeting his match and getting a heroine that doesn't let him get away with anything. Just LOVED it!

McCarthy's humor is something else. She's one that can easily get me to laugh so hard I cry. I about died when Damien got his hands on Mandy's Everything Guide to Pregnancy book. Was hysterical. His horror, panic, awe. His fascination with Mandy's pregnancy did turn a little stalkerish but really was so sweet and endearing. Sending her links to baby sites, suggesting names, showing up at doctors visits. I'd love to post some of my favorite quotes but honest to God I would turn all kinds of red even typing them. I felt so bad for Mandy enduring Damien and his curiosity about the pregnancy and his tendency to ask whatever he was thinking. Hysterical but oh so embarrassing.

The Pregnancy Test was a fantastically fun book and one I was quite sad to see end. The relationship was sweet and funny, warmed your heart and made you laugh out loud. I loved seeing this family come together and really hope they'll pop up now and again in the rest of the series.

The Pregnancy Test by Erin McCarthy caught my eye from it’s colorful cover. If you can’t see, as the picture is small, the cover has a front blurb that substitutes words like job, guy, and feet with pictures.

This book is chick lit. No doubt about that. But if you can get past the steaming story lines, there actually is a really decent story behind it. Damien’s wife is murder and he feels that it would be a betrayal to his dead wife by falling in love with Mandy.

this was mildly cute. it definitely wasn't as funny as the description implied. nowhere near in fact. it was a fluffy mindless romance.
the traumatized hero was a bit annoying. he would have been waaaay better without the random trauma background. that added zilch to the story. I liked Mandy, and Damien, aside from his trauma, but getting to know more about the friends would have been nice. the stories always feel lacking when they ignore supporting characters.

This was a very fun read and I enjoyed it very much......except. Why, oh why, did there have to be an "except":)

For me, there was a very strong "ick" factor in this book. I don't think I'm spoiling anything because it is the entire plot of the story, but here it is. The heroine is pregnant at the beginning of this book. She goes to work for the hero in his office as his assistant. They hit it off....go on vacation....and one thing leads to another.

Damien, aka Demon - businessman, moved from Chicago 3 years earlier after his wife's murder & surviving a grand jury inquest, isolated, alone & lonely, protecting his heart, hard working, impatient, has been through 4 assistants in the last year...

When I read the blurb for this book I expected a rather silly book but I was wonderfully surprised.It was a good story with lovely main characters.Damien was a hero with issues.I expected him to be a jerk,taking it out on Mandy but he did not.He was supportive and he had all the trappings of being a great dad to that baby in the future.
Mandy came off as fluff at the beginning(judgemental I know) but she had a core of steel.At the end when she discovers Damien's secret I expected her to leave him...more

This is my all time favorite book by Erin McCarthy.

Mandy Keeling is in a fix. Without a job, her life is going south in every way possible AND she learns she's pregnant without health insurance. On the way to a job interview she gets sick in front of the boss from hell, Damien Sharpton who also happens to be the guy who is interviewing her. This was a pretty good novel with strong characters. I really, really enjoyed both Mandy and Damien and thought the storyline was strong (if predictable but it *is* a romance novel!) and kept flowing along like it should. It follows a woman (Mandy) who finds out she's pregnant, gets dumped by her older boyfriend (father of the baby), and then starts working for Damien. Pregnant by other men and being in love with different men? I don't like it at first. But more I read it, I become to like the story line. The character are likeable esp. Damien the sexy man, oh how I hove him :">. He is so adorable for caring Mandy and the baby, yet I feel bad of his past with his wife :(.

This book was entertaining me, some scenes made me LOL. Romantic yes, so funny yes, so sexy yes, and hot-steamy absolutely *wink*

permulaan yg menarik minat, dimana Mandy diramal temannya yg 'gemulai' itu. kalau Mandy bakal menemukan hal yg 'manis dan lengket'.
Mandy pikir dia bakal punya toko pastry. tapi ternyata hal manis dan lengket itu adalah dirinya hamil, ditinggal pacarnya yg menghamilinya, menjual toko mainannya dan mengharuskan dia mencari nafkah dgn bekerja di perusahaan dimana bosnya nanti jadi suaminya. *sigh

This book was ok for me. I read it in between my work schedule on my lunch breaks and sometimes at home when I remembered where my kindle was but the story didn't really grab me like some of the other books I've read. Mandy was a character that I didn't really connect with because I feel like the author tried to up her 'English' status too much. I just loved this book. Erin McCarthy has been one of my favorite contemporary romance writers for a long time. I had originally read this book when it first came out back in 2005, since it had been so long I had forgotten almost the whole story line--I just remembered I loved everything Erin McCarthy I've ever read! I was in the mood for a completely normal, fun romance and that is just what I got.

The book hilariously starts with the 4 NY girlfriends and roommates sitting down with the cross dressing psychic wearing designer shoes, Beckwith Tripp...and a trip he is. You get a pretty instant feel for the girls and how they are, fun and close. Mandy was the focus of this prologue psychic reading, where baked goods and happiness was in the cards for her future. Little does she know those said baked goods would come in the form of 1 bun in the oven.

The book starts with Mandy (plus morning sickness, and minus a baby daddy in the picture) rushing to a job interview with a rumored hard ass ogre, Damien Sharpton. The meeting between them and the first impression couldn't be more awkwardly funny. Mandy has decided to keep the pregnancy to herself for now, after one hell of an interview the job is hers.

This starts a cat and mouse avoidance game between Mandy and Damien.

Now, Damien for all his broody assholeness really is a great guy in pain hiding under a mask. I was worried he would have this instant asshat vibe and I would have to grow to love him, not the case. If we wouldn't have had his POV I think it would have been hard to love him, but reading his thoughts, fears, pain, all made him very "human" and very lovable. He is a Control Freak with a capitol C F, terrified to "feel" and desperately avoiding anything that could make him feel those emotions that have long since been hidden behind some thick ass walls. I think as far as connections went I felt stronger with him. When he forgot to hide behind his walls he was hilarious, fun, loving and passionate. He had some work to do to knock down those walls, but with Mandy by his side it was so beautiful (and heartbreaking) to watch.

Mandy, tho equally brilliant in her roll as heroine, was running with her own issues. Parents that don't understand her, douche bag baby daddy, finding herself and creating a new life for her and baby. I really admired her strength. Literally life threw her down and she gets up, dust off, and marches on. Plus, there was no stupid heroine moments for her. She communicated her feelings, which is always refreshing! She went into every situation with open eyes and I loved it.

Mandy and Damien together were perfect. The chemistry was there, the steam was there,and the love was there. The moments of them coming together were hot, the moments of Damien going into pregnancy dictionary zone HILARIOUS, so so much to love about these two!

We didn't get to connect much with the roommates, but when we did they were just as fun as they were during the prologue.

My only wish would have been for an epilogue. I'm happy, very happy with the ending, but I would have loved to see them 5 years or so down the road. Jamie has a book that follows, so fingers crossed for more Damien and Mandy.

The flow of the story is very easy to get hooked to. Erin McCarth does one hell of a job getting us completely in love and connected to both Mandy and Damien, rooting for them to work through their issues and become 3! There was no rushed feel, and the quickness that the love was developed was very believable. Once again, I am reminded how much I love Erin McCarthy's work. (less)
