He's also sure that elderly Reuben Fuentes knows nothing about the bodies scattered on his dusty, southern New Mexico ranch. There are some pretty twisted people living around the fictional Posadas County, NM, and more of them show up in this novel. The title of the book, in a nutshell, is the main mystery to be "uncovered." There's an old uncle of the amazing investigative detective, Estelle Reyes-Guzman, who buries his three dogs that have been poisoned, but it's a mystery as to who poisoned the dogs. A long-time resident real estate agent is killed (shot twice) near where the dogs were buried, after a confrontation ...more

Finished 03/25/2014. Undersheriff Bill Gastner is checking into the unattended death of a retired schoolteacher. He is called to the post office to take a report that R. Twice Buried, by Steven F. Havill, no. 3 in the Bill Gastner series, borrowed from the Library for the Blind, but it is commercially available through audible.com.

In this third book, Bill was getting ready to go to Mexico where Estelle’s baby was being baptized at the family homestead. Bill was to be godfather. But when he went out to visit Estelle’s uncle, whom she wanted him to bring with him, he found that the old man had troubles. Someone had poisoned his dogs. He buried the dogs and was bot

This series has been around for awhile, but I just found it on Amazon Kindle. Solid characters that tie me to the series. Small town western sheriff takes on the bad guys (with help from his friends)

first sentences
Anna Hocking called the Posadas County sheriff’s office at 9:14 P.M. on December 19. That’s what the dispatcher said and that’s what the telephone log confirmed. That same log showed that I responded to the call at 11:02 P.M. Two hours wasn’t our normal response time—but I had a list o

I know of readers who have a tendency to think that slender books can't possibly be as good as thick ones. Don't make that mistake with Steven F. Havill's Posadas County mystery series. Each book packs a big punch with a real feel for rural New Mexico, an engrossing mystery, and some of the best characters you'll find anywhere. Twice Buried can easily be read as a standalone. For that matter, the series itself doesn't necessarily need to be read in order, but I recommend that you do so-- especia ...more

Not up to the standards of later Gastner mysteries

Having read several of the later Undersherrif Bill Gastner mysteries I found myself a little torn with Twice Buried .

I love the character of Bill Gastner. The characters in this series are particularly well-developed and realistic. The procedures in this book are thorough and seemingly well-depicted (I'm not a police officer but it seemed pretty kosher to me) except for one very large hole in the way the investigation developed - a whole line of

#3 in the Posadas County mystery series. This 1994 series entry has Undersheriff Bill Gastner calling on former detective Estelle Guzman-Reyes for help in dealing with her grand-uncle. Estelle's Mexican heritage and widespread family tree often prove valuable to veteran lawman Gastner who is severely Spanish deficient. Strongly recommended, as are all books in this series (19 as of 2013).

Posadas County mystery - Responding to a phone call, Bill Gastner finds Anna Hocking dead, but his attention

PROTAGONIST: Undersheriff Bill Gastner
SETTING: New Mexico
SERIES: #3
RATING: 4.0

For me, the series started coming in to its own in this 3rd book. I like the characterization of Undersheriff Bill Gastner, a bit understated. The other characters could use more development. The plot moved along well, but I did find the resolution a bit too convenient.

PROTAGONIST: Undersheriff Bill Gastner
SERIES: #3
SETTING: New Mexico

Third in the series, we learn more about Bill, his likes and dislikes, and the New Mexico town in which he lives and works as undersheriff. The characters ring true; he does a great job describing small town eccentrics and trailer trashy folks.

I am really enjoying this author. He writes in a way you can follow the story, and you feel like you are being told that story. While I try to guess ahead as to what will happen, it usually has a better twist than I had imagined. I would highly recommend anything by this author that I have so far read.

It is so slow. I finished it, but it is definitely one of the more painful ones. Maybe the book is better, but the narrator make it take a million years.

This series just gets better and better. The characters are realistic and grow and change but not drastically and not in a way that makes them not fit.
