Another fun romp with Queen Betsy with the wonderful Nancy Wu making it a lot more fun. There was a brief synopsis of the events that led up to this book, but Davidson still wasted a lot of words recapping. I hate that. This is pap. If I picked up the series from this book, I really wouldn't miss anything without the recap. It's just not that complicated. Spending 5 minutes telling me the back story on a character is not needed & plain boring.
MJD points out in her introduction that the new cover of UNDEAD AND UNWORTHY reflects the new direction that this book and the two upcoming ones will follow; a mini-story arc within a story arc. Frankly, I'm not all that thrilled.
Betsy is still Betsy -- still childish, still prone to immaturity, still interested with having sex with her new husband as often as possible, still the new guardian of Baby Jon (although he's conspicuously missing from this installment), still back-and-forth with best...more

Undead and Unworthy is the continuing story of Betsy (the Vampire Queen), and her gang of friends. It's the seventh book in the series, and unfortunately I felt that it was one of the weakest.
MaryJanice Davidson prefaced the book with a note to the reader letting us know that this is the first book in a new story arc. Along with new cover art, it seems like the story lines have gotten a little sexier and lighter. But it just didn't seem to have that much substance to me. The past novels in the s...more

At the beginning of this book MJD addresses the reader and mentions that she's taking Betsy in a new direction (a new story arc) and that this and the next two books will comprise a trilogy within a series. I personally do not see what this arc might or might not be and this book seems to be just more of the same to me. About the only thing I see different is that Betsy is starting to loose a little (and I do mean a very miniscule amount) of her "blondeness" and standing up for herself and her r...more
Mary Janice Davidson, step away from your computer! Take your silly "trilogy within a series" and toss it out the window. It's a terrible, terrible idea!
I read the Queen Betsy books for a quick, lighthearted read that leaves me chuckling. I don't want serious sub-plots or random new weirdo characters. I want fun!
The latest installment is much darker than the other books and I don't like it. Plus, the ending was HORRIBLE. I'm not going to tell you what happened because then this review will be ma...more

Started this book a few days ago and hate it! I read the whole series up to now and I'm walking away. The first two books were cute and fun. The third was pretty entertaining as well. The series should have stopped there. The author insists on rehashing past story lines at the beginning of each subsequent book. If a reader is stupid enough to pick up book 7 without reading the prior books, too freakin' bad! They can catch up on their own time.

Undead and Unworthy by MaryJanice Davidson is a really great book to read Betsy Taylor aka Elizabeth Taylor has just become not only a new vampire but a new bride as well. As she also adapts with the duties of a vampire queen she also now has to take on the role of being a mommy to her half baby brother. As well as this she is also getting over the deaths of her parents and her were friend Antonia. Her husband the sinister yet charming over protective Sinclair is also learning how to adapt to hi...more

Davidson writes a little note to us, the readers, that she is taking the series into a different direction, hint the change of the cover illustrations. At first, I had mixed feelings, and wasn't sure if it would work, because she also mentions that it will become a triology within the series. So far I do like it. In fact, I think that this book was the best out of the series, and def is a turning point for Betsy as a character. A few beloved characters were "written off" in the last book, and ma...more

‘Undead and Unworthy’ is the seventh book in MaryJanice Davidson’s eclectically awesome ‘Undead; Queen Betsy’ paranormal series.
At the end of the sixth instalment, ‘Undead and Uneasy’, Davidson mentioned in an author’s note that the next few books in the ‘Queen Betsy’ series would be focusing on a new plot trajectory, like a mini-trilogy within the already established series.

I hate pleasant surprises.*
I'd prewritten much of this review (in my head, at least) before even cracking the book's spine. It was a well-planned metaphor about buying junk from the vending machine when you're not even hungry and eating it though it doesn't really taste good and leaves a greasy slime on your teeth.
Seriously, though, I couldn't have told you why I keep picking up the Undead books. They've never been satisfying -- too much chick, not enough lit. And though I've been accused (harru...more

I think it's awesome that Betsy's story is going towards a slightly different direction starting from this book.
As I understand it, MaryJanice Davidson originally planned only 6 books for Betsy. But obviously MaryJanice still had lots of plans for the characters when book 6 ended. So she started this new trilogy with the same characters.
Undead and Unworthy is actually the first of the trilogy.

Best book of the series. I like the direction MJ has this book going in. It's less romance, except for the opening scene and that was funny, and more kick butt. I think Betsy finally is learning she's in charge and is going about the right way now. I'm glad the fiends, that are left, are back to their own selves. What's next for Betsy? I can't wait to find out.
One of the best Betsy books yet. She's finally growing into her role as Queen, and is doing a great job. The only thing I didn't like was how some characters who had been built up over the course of several books were killed off in the blink of an eye. I understand that character deaths are sometimes necessary, but it just seemed wrong, especially how one person was killed 'off-screen' in the book. It does make me wonder, since Ms. Davidson said this is the first of a new Betsy trilogy, who will...more

Here's a rare (for me) down with MJD review. So, when I got the book from the library, I was quite shocked that it was a hardback with totally new cover art. What happened to my tiny little paperbacks with the colorful whimsical covers?!? This book looks like every Young Adult vampire/fantasy book on the shelves. Okay, so maybe that's not a big deal, but I'm telling you, it gave me a different feel right off the bat (literally too since it was a heavier hardback - LOL). Then MJ says in her intro...more
This series used to be one of my favorites. When I happened upon it for the first time, I was absolutely delighted with the story, characters, the light humor, and fantastic romance. Now, I have a complete change of opinion.
I found that I was rather dissappointed with this book. Betsy gets on my nerves because of her recklessness and the way she acts on a daily basis. Also, Sinclair can definately play a larger role. I'll love to see some actual romance between the two instead of the quick sex s...more

Undead and Unworthy, as many have said before me, sees a change in the series and it's a darker one. Although Betsy, Queen of the vampires and resident of oh so snowy Minnesota, is still the same bumbling, self centered, focused on shoes and clothing, vampire that we've come to know and love, the plot takes a much darker turn.
The fiends play a central part to the plot in this first book of a three book arc, and two well established characters bow out before the end of the story.

Davidson's Undead series is always so much fun to me, but in the past I have found these books to be more humorous than this particular novel. Because the author prefaced the book as being the first part of a "trilogy" in the Undead series, I was prepared for something earth-moving. Although the novel was slightly more serious in the way of plots, and although we lost a pertinent character at the end, I still wasn't as enchanted by the book as I'd hoped to be. Undead and Unworthy was a fast and...more
The author states in the introduction to this book that it is the beginning of a new story arc within the series. The story definitely took a darker turn, and I'm not sure I liked it as well as I liked the previous novels. One of the major developments in the story seemed somewhat implausible to me because of the actions in prior novels of the characters involved. I am extremely interested in what Davidson has planned for BabyJon, as there is obviously something brewing with his character in thi...more
I loved this book! I got it in cassette form at a booksale. I know I'm reading them out of order, but I don't care; I'm going to read them all anyway. Welcome to BetsyTaylor’s world. Being a Vamp queen really sucks, especially when a bunch of ferrel vamps hold her responsible for their turning, So when they escape from their confinement and come after her and her royal entourage, fangs are bared, and blood is spilled. As if that isn’t enough, “the aunt” is now a ghost and Betsy and Sinclair (Go...more
I've read all the Undead books within the past week. Once I read the first, I was hooked on the fun and zany plots. Davidson has certainly had me laughing out loud on the train.
That being said, I'm interested to know what the new story arc will bring and will keep reading, BUT:
1. HATE the new cover art. Far too typical of the genre. Also makes it look more YA. The drawings were cute, yes, but they were also ORIGINAL and reflected the quirkiness of the series. This one is very run of the mill.

Good book. The Betsy books are always a quick read because they are real page-turners. This book has a little darker ending but is still hilarious through the entire story. We learn that Nick really hates Betsy with a passion which baffles me because of the positive influence she had on Jessica in the last book. Sinclair is just as dreamy as always. I picture him looking like Adrian Paul in his Highlander days so I like any interaction with his character. I am force now to catch up on two missin...more
Typical Mary Janice Davidson "Queen Betsy" book. Very fast read - but I'm not sure I'm going to continue with this series. Not a lot of content and publishers are using larger type and more white space on each page ... so there's a lot less to read even though it's supposed to be a full-length book.
Sorry - this is more of a rant about publishing than the book itself. If you've already read this first six in this series, you might enjoy this book - if you've never ready this before I would start...more

Betsy is writing thank-you-notes to her wedding guest, enjoying her sex life with Sinclair, fending off fiends and having snarky conversations with the rest of her posse. Some fighting, a minimalistic plotline involving Nick and bad guys getting killed off. Lots of dialogue to pump it all up to 285 pages.
