This is one of those rare cases where the sequel outdoes the original. The first, Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty though likeable enough, was somewhat constrained by the framework of the retelling (in this particular case, a modern retelling of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing). In the second, while there are echoes of Cyrano de Bergerac , Gehrman doesn't rely on the device to be her end-all be-all in terms of the story. Triple Shot Bettys In Love was as funny and heartwarming as Confessions Of a Triple Shot Betty, if not more.

Geena and Amber grew greatly as characters and were hilarious most of the time. The dialogue and situations between them and the other characters was realistic and believable. As I said in my review of Confessions Of a Triple Shot Betty, Geena and Amber felt like they could be some of my best friends if they were real.

I didn't know how this second novel was going to be, I mean sequels are sometimes a flop. I loved this book even more than the first though. Romantic rivalry was top on the lists of things I loved about this novel. We get introduced to Sophie and she wants Ben (Benedict) in a bad way. Ben doesn't see the nasty fire that she spits in Geena's direction, which has Geena paranoid. To top it off, Sophie is super glamourous and always dresses to the nines; whereas Geena is Skater Chic. The second thing I loved was the hilarious misadventures with the English sub. I mean, Geena following Amber on a date to text her lines. I loved when she texted Amber "Brontë" and Amber pronounces it "Bront". Fantastic! I would certainly consider this novel a companion to Confessions instead of a sequel, because while this does follow chronologically, it is not a continuation of the first story and you don't have to have read Confessions in order to read this one. I was a little disappointed that Hero wasn't more of a character in this one, although it's understandable (her being at boarding school in CT and all). I really start to like how she contrasted with Amber and Geena in the first novel and wished there was that dynamic again here. Again, Jody Gehrman created very 3D characters that you could feel like you actually knew, even if sometimes you wanted to shake them. There was still some slimy guys in this one, but nothing the Bettys couldn't handle. I would make sure you check this one out if you like escapades and caffeine and boys and love and trouble and life.

This was a fun, light read - great as a vacation book.

The Triple Shot Bettys are the young girls who run a coffee shack and attend Sonoma Valley High.

Friendships, love interests, misunderstanding, all the angst of being young and finding your way and handled in this fun read.

Have not had the opportunity to read the first book about these friends, Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty, but feel sure it would be a good read also.

Shelves: sweet-and-sour

This book is one that I got from my own high school library (where I teach) and it was really cute. The characters are believable. Although the days of acting like these kids do is long over for me, I remember only too well what it was like to crush on a boy. I think that's why sometimes a YA book works for adults, it causes us to reminisce.

This book has lots of talk about sex and drugs in it, but it's realistic to how teens are today. Like it or not, that is what is on the minds of young teens...more

I didn't know if I could love this one more than the first novel but I definitely do love it just as much they are both equal. While Hero is not a constant in this one she is still around which is good.
This book was super witty, fresh and just so realistic. The way they dealt with love was amazing on all sides but the main story of Geena and Ben was really good and for some reason touched me and loved the way it all played out.

Amber is now living her dream, working part-time at a tattoo parlor, and appears mostly free of her skanky reputation. But beneath that pretty face and her flirtatious armor lies: insecurity. In her intelligence, in her self-worth. Her mother the absentee drunk and Geena sort of reinforce this insecurity throughout the book, to varying degrees of inadvertence. So, Amber lies to Mr. Sands about her age and claims to be a college student. She convinces Geena to help her make a MySpace page to impress Mr. Sands and write e-mails and instant messages to him. It’s all very Cyrano de Bergerac. (I’ve not read it, but I’ve seen Roxanne. Speaking of, whatever happened to Rick Rossovic?) Of course, the more Geena writes to Mr. Sands, the more involved she becomes, and the more she withdraws from Ben. Amber begins to feel more and more stupid and inadequate as time goes on, and a rift begins to form in their friendship.

Hero is not gone from the picture entirely. She is back at boarding school in Connecticut, and keeping up with Geena via e-mail. I like how in this book, Hero seems to have matured the most of all the girls. She seems to be the voice of reason when Geena is about to do something stupid or just thinking irrationally. It suits her well.

I liked how Gehrman updated the letter writing and speeches under the window for the present day. I didn’t know any teens that were as well read on the classics (for leisure) in my day, but maybe they DO exist now.

One thing I really liked was Geena’s exploration into her parents’ divorce, and why they didn’t stay together. It was clearly making an impact on her current relationship with Ben and her mom, and was worth discussing. Then Gehrman takes it one step further and makes it apply to Amber, who becomes just lovable by the end of the book. The message I got from it all was: never stay with someone who makes you feel small. And if you’ve got to be someone completely different to make them like you, is it really worth it?

This is a very good follow-up to the first book. I’d definitely recommend it.

Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty ended up being one of my favorite novels of last year, so it would be an understatement to say I was excited about reading this sequel and exploring how man-hating, feisty Geena would fare in her first romantic relationship.

In a plot reminiscent of Cyrano de Bergerac, Amber enlists the decidedly more book smart Geena in her cam...more Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty ended up being one of my favorite novels of last year, so it would be an understatement to say I was excited about reading this sequel and exploring how man-hating, feisty Geena would fare in her first romantic relationship.

In this second Betty adventure, the action revolves around Amber’s crush on the hot new English sub, the Jack Kerouac loving Mr. Sands. In a plot reminiscent of Cyrano de Bergerac, Amber enlists the decidedly more book smart Geena in her campaign to win over Mr. Sands, getting her help in making over her MySpace page and sending him literate, witty messages. Meanwhile, Geena has problems of her own: Sophie, a super-sophisticated girl from boyfriend Ben’s past moves back to Sonoma and makes it clear she wants to steal him away from her. The third Betty, Hero, is still presumably in love with Claudio, but both are largely MIA here (sadly).

It’s definitely written with the assumption that the readers have read the first book. Since it’s been 7 months since I read it though, I’ll admit, I was a little hazy on the details. It bothered me that the character of PJ was mentioned multiple times without explanation of who he was, and I racked my brain trying to remember (without success). It was also probably due to this time lapse that I struggled through the first 50 pages or so until Mr. Sands and the main plotline was introduced. I loved this portion of the novel: Author Gehrman really excels at writing humor and literary criticism. Her assessments of Kerouac’s On the Road (through Geena) mirror my own:

“I wanted to be totally into it, but the truth is, I had to make myself keep reading. I kept looking for the radiant, electrifying prose Mr. Sands always goes on about, but to me it just felt like one, queasy car ride with no particular destination.” (p 61)

And then there’s the Geena/Ben/Sophie plotline. What really I liked about this was the authentic feeling of awkwardness between Geena and Ben – both in terms of how far they should go physically and the spats they had due to Geena’s fear of not being a good girlfriend and her general tendency towards avoidance. What I didn’t like so much was the way Geena let Sophie bully her. Where was feisty Geena from the first book who never let anyone get in her way? To me, it just seemed too much out of character.

Overall, this makes a very nice companion novel to the Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty. Just make sure you read that one first.

Fans of Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty will not be disappointed in its very funny and similarly well-written sequel. Gehrman is a master at telling realistic stories most teens can relate to with a perfect mix of humor and depth. Geena and Amber are so easy to relate to because they’re so genuine and every girl in the world has probably experienced boy troubles and insecurity before at least once. I truly love how Gehrman can take everyday teen problems and make them something to worry and laugh about and eventually learn from in a truly enjoyable tale. My one major source of disappointment was the absence of the third Betty, Hero, except for a short appearance and a few emails. Also, I was a little sad the Bettys didn’t exercise the slightly vengeful nature I saw in Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty against the people who deserved it the most, but it did show the Bettys’ growth in maturity. Despite the presence of only two-thirds of my favorite Betty trio, Triple Shot Bettys in Love was a cute and lovable tale I immensely enjoyed.

Any and every teen girl will enjoy the Bettys stories in both Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty and Triple Shot Bettys in Love, especially the ones who like stories peppered with laughs and coffee shots. Unfortunately, Betty fans will have to wait until after the New Year to acquire this new Betty tale; but never fear: it is worth the wait!

I read this book in one day. I seriously could not put it down. And I totally got into it...

I most definitely cried at one part in particular.....which made me want to keep reading so that what I hoped would happen would. I loved the ending and it may just be me but I'm a total sucker for books like these. I hope Gehrman will write more about the bettys and ben and the whole crew.

This book was almost as good as the first, but I found the description on the jacket to be misleading. The plot with Ben wasn't really about him wanting sex, but Geena's inability to communicate and be emotionally intimate with him. I still love that it is a light romantic read whose main character is an androgynous smart skater girl.

Seriously hilarious and charming, both in terms of characters and writing. I simply adored the consistency of the plot: in the first book, it was about taking down a narcissistic player, and in this installation, it no doubt came to be about taking down an egotistical jerk of a man. all i can say about this book is, IT'S THE BEST BOOK EVER!!! i honestly enjoyed this book more than the first one. i love the romance and the things in there that are true on what teens think about. this book left me with questions and starving for more. i hope for another book to answer all my questions.

I liked this better than the first one (although I loved that one too). I didn't realize that she was basing these books on Shakespeare until Wendy told me the other day. I think it upped the smart factor for me. Even though the characters do occasionally annoy me with their teenage obliviousness, I still think they are funny and care about what happens to them.

Surprising, much? This is when, for me, when the sequel is better than the starter book. I enjoyed it more! I think we learned too little about the characters in the first book, and now we know more about Ben, Amber and Geena's mom. The point here is, that it outdoes it.
