Claire's Not-So-Gothic Romance
by
Bonnie Blythe (Goodreads Author)
Claire Parnell, plain, repressed, and broke, falls desperately in love with Sam Murray, the sought-after new guy in town, and must overcome her scheming mother, a badly decorated red room, the enticements of the flesh (albeit scrawny), and Sam's unsavory past, to claim the same hard-fought happiness as her favorite literary heroine...Jane Eyre.

I picked this up without knowing it was Christian fiction, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. In fact, it was out of my comfort zone for two reasons: it was not only heavily Christian, it was contemporary romance.
It's also charmingly written in a distinct, accessible voice. Anyone who loves Jane Eyre will find something in this book. Claire, the protagonist, loves Jane Eyre, has seen every movie version multiple times, and recites more lines from the Gothic novel than she doe...more

Up front I just have to say that I almost didn't read this book... The first few pages were awkward and confusing, but I'm glad I pressed on. I don't usually care for overly-Christian fiction or "sweet" G-rated romance either, but with Claire's Not-So-Gothic Romance the quirky characters and story line won me over. Glad I read past the first few pages and explored a novel that's out of my comfort zone!

This book was an absolute blast to read! Claire is such a real character, I could totally relate to her. I loved how she acted when Sam (the nurse) kept showing up everywhere, her actions were so realistic and humorous. Claire's eccentric mother is completely strange and adds tons of awkward humor. Sam was also a great character, his relentless pursuit of Claire was very charming. It was cool to see that such a nice guy can come from a rough background.

To be honest, when I first started this book I didn't think I was going to care for it within the first couple of chapters. But when I kept reading, I really enjoyed this lighthearted but complex romance infused with Jane Eyre type sound bites. Thought Bonnie's take on today's college age church dating scene was pretty realistic and on track for most churches. It was nice to see a heroine who had her own faults but realized that staying true to her values was important for her own life.
This was really cute. I wasn't sure at the beginning with the switching back and forth from gothic to modern times--it was a little difficult to follow. Once I got into the swing of things, there was lots to appreciate. It was a well written tale with excellent moral standards, something that I don't find very often.
This books was a laugh a minute! It was a nonstop rollercoaster of laughter and empthy for poor Claire. We've all been embarassed by a family member, but Claire's mother takes the cake. This book is an extreemly fun christian comedic romance. It was impossible for me to step away from until the very last word.
If you like inspirational romance this one is really cute. Ms. Blythe has a great voice and Claire was a fun, if sometimes a little too deprecating, heroine. She shined the most when the humor was a little more subtle, but I enjoyed the read.
*okay...it got a little twee every once in awhile, but I still liked it.

I really enjoyed this one. The heroine is a little weird, but knows she's a little weird and has a lot of fun with it. Lots of Jane Eyre references that I appreciated, not sure how those would land on anyone unfamiliar with the work. I liked that, unlike some other Christian romances I've read lately, the author wasn't afraid to let the characters feel a bit of attraction. I'd have given it 5 stars except that the ending felt a bit contrived.
