An interesting easy read. While there are elements that are timeless and which remain relevant, this book is now also fascinating as a historical study - a family vacation across the United States at a point when culture was just changing and how a somewhat traditional (although unusual, even then) family reacts to situations. The first-person perspective of the teenager works, even though the author was in her forties. There are plenty of issues that have not been resolved in the subsequent dec...more

I just finished reading this as my library actually had a copy and it was on the shelf. I liked it better than MEET THE AUSTINS (dang I always want to spell that name with an E), but not as much as the time series books or the first of the O'Keefe/Murray family books - ARM OF THE STARFISH. I began to read ACCEPTABLE TIME, but then I realized it was 4th in the O/M family books, so I put it aside for now. I'm trying to get the next book in the Austin family series via ILL. transamerican camping trip with the quaint and quoting austin family! actually the fact that all the characters constantly quote famous poets kind of drives me nuts, but in a good way. because the austins are so cute, and i love them. and this book makes me nostalgic. because it's swell.
my only regret is that i couldn't find a copy with a cover like the one i read as an adolescent- where vicky has long hippie hair and zachary looks exactly like the fonz. my cover is so mid-nineties. blech.

I vividly remember this book even though I last read it 25+ years ago. As a young reader, I liked being on the cross-country road trip with Vicky Austin and her family and will never forget the two very different boys she meets and how they rival for her affections. These books had a depth that very few books for adolescent girls had at the time (and possibly today).

Several common motifs in this book mirror the Wrinkle in Time series- awkward girl maturing around more confident siblings, Cold War threats, Christian good/evil choices in conduct, the all-wise parents. It's a nice book, but lacks the fantastic that makes the morals so much easier to swallow.

So, I have two and a half chapters left of this one. I set it down in the staff lounge at work and forgot it. It was gone when I came back. I hope someone took it back to the library for me. Or at least didn't shelve in the medical library I work in.

Fantastic book by one of my favorite authors of a girl's coming-of-age during a family camping trip. I love L'Engle's thought- provoking writing. She is amazing.

For die-hard fans - all the characters appear in other books so it is a must for those who wish to read all of her works...
