The Last Voyage of the Albatross

When the ill-fated schooner Albatross went down in the Gulf of Mexico, Chuck Geig was one of fourteen boys aboard. The loss of the ship's log made his letters home the only existing record of this voyage, and it is from them, and his remembrances, that he and Felix Sutton, author of many adventure books, have reconstructed the story.

I picked up this book after seeing the movies White Squall which is based off of this book. Unfortunately, there are almost no similarities between the book and the movies aside from the ship sinking. Maybe that disappointment altered my opinions of the book, however, if I'm going to read about a ship sinking and people dying, I wanted to feel something for the people involved. That does not happen with this book. It is basically an account of all of the different places that the ship went on it ...more

I enjoyed this book. I wish I was as aware and sharp as Chuck when I was 17.

I have a thing for adventure yarns. Particularly marine and whitewater river running. This one was entertaining and amusing. Don't take that the wrong away, please. It's tragic but Geig is an upbeat kid with his whole life ahead of him after the disasterous sinking. He expresses his sorrow admirably at the loss of a third of the ship's complement who became more than friends but family. But his irrepressible exhuberance

Recommends it for: historians, high school aged boys, lovers of the sea
Recommended to Rachel by: One of the members of the Albatross Crew, Dick Strayer
The Albatross was the home of The Ocean Academy, a sea-going prep school. Travis's dad was a student & sailor on the ship. This book is, in part, his story.

It's hard to remember this story is written by a 17 year old mid westerner... the adventures of the students on the Albatross were fantastic, but their horror was equally so.
I'm looking forward to reading White Squall, the novel based on the events of this ship.
