A fascinating collection of essays by someone who has lived an exciting life. When Caputo isn't describing the briny thrill of deep-sea fly fishing, or the sometimes absurdly dangerous supply drop missions of African bush pilots, he's deeply reflective of his time spent in company of the really remarkable people that populate his stories. This is the first work by Caputo that I've read; I'll be reading another soon, for sure.

This is a really interesting set of essays. If you like Philip Caputo's novels, I recommend this book as it sheds some light on who the author is. There are also several essays that compliment some of his novels- particularly one on his return to Vietnam is very rewarding if you have read A Rumor of War.

Caputo has gone to places and experienced situations few of us will have the opportunity (or nerve) to experience - from grizzlies in Alaska to lions in Tsavo. He has a gift for allowing us to see those things through his written word. A very good read all in all.
