My daughter's teacher gave this to her for her kindergarten graduation and has thus set us off to devour another series. It is written for young readers and is wonderfully "clean" and innocent. Every chapter seemed to end with a cliff hanger so that I was constantly begged to read just one more chapter. I also liked that it was written about the enjoyment reading can bring us. There is also a touch of history thrown in - China in this case! My daughter woke me up at 7:30 this morn...more
This book sent us off on a search to find out how paper and silk were made. A good way to bring science into history.
My generic review for the Magic Tree House books -
We've loved them all so far. They are fun, easy to read and contain quite a bit of historical information. We use them as read-alouds, but most elementary/middle school kids could read them on their own.

My 4 yo and I are enjoying these short early chapter books. There is just enough adventure and danger to make a good story he can follow, as well as enough for me to enjoy. The bonus is these are "edutainment," so we both learn a few new facts. The book is full of information about Life in China under the First emperor. This book was definitely full of adventure. I find it interesting how the author helps build comparisons between what is happening in the current story and other previ...more
A nice story, not as scary as the last one but still exciting. I loved the appreciation of books and the lesson about burning books. I thought it was funny when Jack was surprised when something magical happened; despite his magic tree house travels he still believes more in facts than fancy. I also liked the legend at the end, it was lovely and new to me.
Book #14 in the Magic Tree House series and book #2 in the mini-series where Jack and Annie, as newly minted Master Librarians, must rescue four endangered books in history. This book was very interesting for all of us. I had heard about the thousands of clay soldiers unearthed in China, but I never knew much about the Dragon King. The story that Jack and Annie rescue is very interesting as well.
This book was good but not my favorite. I didn't understand why the Dragon King was burning books in the first place and just accepted that that was what Mary Pope Osbourne had written for the story. I was glad that the magic silk ball led Jack and Annie out of the tomb and saved them.
It was a sweet ending and another book of the collection read.

I liked this book because it was interesting. It was interesting because it told me alot about the Terracota Army I learnt that the Terracota Army will protect the Dragon King when he dies. I also learnt that the Dragon King had 7,000 life-size clay figures. I would reconmend this book 6 to 8 year olds.
This is one of the books i had to read in the third grade and i remember that i really liked it. The only thing i can remember about it is that they have to get an ancient scroll from a book-hating-emperor and if i remember correctly the get some help from other people as well.
I picked this up to read because my seven year old was so excited about what he was reading. I can see why he likes these books. Bits of history told in an exciting and sometimes suspenseful way. I learned things I never knew (or had forgotten) about ancient China.
The 1st emperor of China has a habiot of burning books (really bamboo posts). Jack and Annie need to rescue one. Will they manage it? and just what do the cow herder and the silk weaver have to do with it?
Getting lost in the emperor's soon to be tomb doesn't help.

The king of China wants to destroy all books because he thinks it will keep people from trying to rise up against him. The kids go in to rescue a specific book for Morgain the Librarian and meet people along the way who help them.
Day of the Dragon-King by Mary Pope Osborne is the second of the lost books series and the fourteenth in the Magic Tree House Series. In this one Jack and Annie go back to the first emperor of China to rescue a scroll that is slatted for burning.
With Sean learning Mandarin at school Day of the Dragon-King was extra special. We took time out from our reading to look at pictures of the terracotta warriors and to discuss the myth that plays a central part of the book.

I'm obviously too old for these books, [I'm 16] but they're like a guilty pleasure. I'm rating it three stars because they are basic and repetitive. However, they're great books for little kids!
Jack and Annie travel through time and space to visit ancient China. There they see famous sites like the Great Wall and the terra-cotta warriors as they're being put together.
Christopher is reading this series...and he needed a push..told him I would read them along w/him. : )
He promises to catch up to me...but not today

I absolutely LOVED the series when I was a kid, and I still do! I would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy / adventure books!! :)
I hate the Magic Tree House Series. I don't think their well-written at all. I'd rather have the Magic School Bus series
In this book I learned about Chinese writing. Jack and Annie went to the Dragon King's palace to get a bamboo book.
The Magic Tree House series is great for elementary aged school children. Packed with fun, facts and adventure.
It was funny that in the book, the dragon king is burning the books, and that goes along the dad's shirt.
it was a good book. it was about jack and annie trying to stop the dragon king from burning books.
A school Principal came to my Dad's work and gave this book to me, while I was there with him.
I think that back in ancient China they didn't use paper but they used bamboo to write on.

I gave it a five because I liked when they were running away from the dragon king.
The Magic Treehouse Books are quick reads that are easy to dramatize.
The details about the tomb were cool and I liked the legend.
About when Jack and Annie travel to China and encounter a Dragon-King.
This was the first Magic Tree House book I read.
