What a great addition to the urban fantasy genre. Mercy is a likeable and engaging protagonist. She doesn't come off as invincible and inhuman in her buttkicking abilities, yet at the same time, she is comfortable in her own skin and can hold her own.

The universe is interesting, much like the world we live in, save the addition of preternatural creatues such as werewolves, vampires, fae, and coyote shifters like Mercy, which seem quite rare.

The thing is, I did REALLY enjoy this book - it has a lot to recommend itself to readers with. Mercy is a nice character. She's not a complete badass but she's not a push over either.

There's a mystery - though the mystery was interesting it all came up kind of lame in the end.

After all the reviews I had read about this book, I though this series would be a good one. Everyone was giving 5 stars to this book,so I had high expectations for it. Maybe that was the problem.

Review for the book March 2009:
I love the character Mercy Thompson. She is fiesty, sarcastic, knows how to pick her battles, and smart.

I really liked how much detail went into all the politics and relationships in all the different types of paranormal creatures. It was super detailed with out page long info-dump paragraphs, and relly helped deepen the plot.

It pains me to say this (and I may lose my "guy" cred), but I'm a big fan of the urban-fantasy sub-genre. While I tend to lean more towards male protagonists (i.e. Butcher's Dresdan Files and Green's Nightside series), I still love me a good, tough female protagonist. I find this book really hard to rate.
I like Briggs' writing style. Some people have described it as 'simple but effective' and I find that a fitting description.
Mercy Thompson is a very likable protagonist. She is sympathetic and not-pretentious. She is smart and courageous without trying to be the tough heroine.

Lately I have been reading just pretty much young adult books but I thought I give adult urban fantasy a go and I’m so glad I did. Moon Called was action packed, witty, suspenseful and addictive. I absolutely recommend this one! Full of Werewolves, Vampires, and Shapeshifters, OH MY, AND a totally brilliant butt-kicking heroine who just happens to have a coyote alter ego- I did not want to put it down once I got into it!

The heroine, Mercy Thompson, is a walker- a shapeshifter of Native American descent- who wears her coyote skin as comfortably as her human form. It's difficult to review this one without spoiling it for those who haven't read it yet, but I'll attempt it.

Re-read this and thought it was awesome. Maybe this is why people re-read books! Gets better each time :)
I love Mercy - she's tough, sarcastic, smart, but not infallible. There's a lot of wit and humor in the book. I didn't find any of the characters annoying. Great story, well explained world-building. Second time around, 5 stars!

This is the first novel in Briggs' urban fantasy series about the coyote shapeshifter, Mercy Thompson. I really enjoyed this book! I thought though that some parts were a bit dragged out; but I still enjoyed it very much. Don't judge this book by its cover! The cover is horrible, like some 80's metal band chick...it doesn't even "look" like her, in my mind. She's not that sleezy looking! LOL

I love Mercy (Mercedes). The supernatural world seems so normal in this series. Mercy is fun - with just enough spunk...and everyone keeps their hormones in check....sort of. LOL

I didn’t expect to like this book. It looked a little too similar to the Sookie Stackhouse series for my comfort. Plus how was I supposed to identify with a tattooed, tough-as-nails mechanic as a female lead? (Frankly her image on the cover is off-putting. She could beat me up!) This book is a fantastic start to an Urban Fantasy series by Patricia Briggs. The focus is on Mercedes Thompson, a walker/were-coyote. I don’t really think it necessary for me to review Moon Called since all of you were the ones to convince me to read it in the first place to get me out of my Paranormal Pfunk.

First I will say I’m ashamed to admit I never read this series because I thought it sounded cheesy. A tough talking coyote mechanic?? Puhleeze. And the cover? I know this is a selling point to most but again I am soooo done with the badass girl with the tattoo book cover.

Moon Called is the first in the Mercy Thompson series. Mercy Thompson is a mechanic and shape shifter, she was raised by a pack of wolves and now lives next door to the handsome local Alpha wolf. She's friends with a fae and a vampire and tries to just live her life. Someone said it best when they said that Mercy Thompson is pretty much a normal person with normal friends except they all happen to be supernatural.
