This is primarily a selection of the watercolor botanicals from Alexander Marshall's seventeenth century masterpiece, his own private Florilegium, which eventually made it's way into the Royal Library as a gift to King George IV in the early 1800's. It includes succinct biographical information about Marshall, including the fact that he had little or no formal artistic training and made his living, not as an artist . . . which you would assume, from the quality of the work in the book . . . but ...more

Gorgeous! Page after page of striking colour and minute details in a variety of flowers. Bonus? The intro is an intriguing account of Mr Marshal and how he came to paint the featured flora of his wealthy patrons' gardens.

This was a beautiful book to look at and an interesting, brief look at the ecological history of English gardens.
