The Virgin River series and Whispering Rock in particular, are the type of books one reads when quiet, restful time is needed. Each one focuses on a love story set in the same small mountain town. The names in each book change but the feeling is always consistent - low key, day to day happenings with people who care about each other.

In this installment, Mike and Brie have known each other for years but life has taken them on separate journeys - until now. Mike is in Virgin River recovering from...more

With her Virgin River series, Robyn Carr is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Whispering Rock, the third in the series, was another great book. As with the second novel in the series, this book does not really have a primary focus on the characters who are portrayed as the main ones in the synopsis, but is instead about several characters with ties to the community of Virgin River. I found the story of Mike and Brie to be very satisfactory, and I loved seeing more of Jack and Mel from...more

3.5 stars, actually.

My least favorite of the 3 Virgin River books. Not that I didn't like it - I did - I just didn't like it as much as the others.

I did love Brie and Mike together. They were a good fit for each other. Though I have to admit Mike got a little too...soft...in my opinion. But I think for the most part Carr did their relationship well. I was a bit disappointed at how they seemed to get pushed aside a bit near the end. All she had was a short paragraph about how they returned from S...more

Keep the tissues handy. All these stories are about healing, but the hardship has to happen first. Even the things that you see coming from a mile away are effective.

Carr pulls a lot of emotion out of the reader and her stories are very powerful. Mike and Brie both have pain and regrets. The things that bring them together then the evolution of their relationship made for really great reading. And plenty of tears, but lovely romance as well.

The side stories are powerful as well. One seemed to po...more

For me the Virgin River books are not just about the characters that are mentioned in the synopsis on the back of the cover. I would say those are the main focus characters of the story and they always seem to have their own unique personal dramatic problem to conquer.

But there is a lot going on around those characters and in the town itself. In this book the theme was rape and we saw how the main characters dealt with it but we also saw how rape was affecting the high school. Really, these wer...more

When you read Virgin River you are so invested in the stories between the characters. As the books progress, not only are you introduced to a new H/H but you are also given a glimpse of the hardships and happiness of the previous characters. I enjoy reading more about Jack, Mel, Paige and Preacher and seeing what's new in their lives. I hope their stories continue throughout the rest of the series. I'm really enjoying Virgin River so far!

Mike, another Ex-Marine and Ex-LAPD, now resides in Virgi...more

3rd in the Virgin River Series

Another good one. Miguel "Mike" Valenzuela is almost healed from being shot 3 times by a gang banger. His best friend's little sister, Brie, is raped and beaten. He has only just started to realize his feelings for her and he reaches out to be there for her. He takes it slow with her and helps her heal her soul.

That is only the beginning of the story for Virgin River. Mike and Brie are the romance, but so much more is going on in the town. There is a date rapist in...more

First off, I wanted more Mike and Brie. Ms. Carr had built such a great foundation for this couple in Shelter Mountain that I became very excited to read Whispering Rock. And Robyn did a good job of telling the continuing story of our favorite small town, she just didn’t include enough of the story I wanted to see. They seemed like a backburner ~ maybe that’s not the right word. But the story wasn’t about them with side stories thrown in ~ the story seemed to be more a collection of side stories...more

This series... I like the beginning, get a little bored from the middle to the end but yet I'm always intrigued about the next one.

Setting:Small town fun! Everybody knows everybody!

Mel & Jack- I liked them better this time than I did in the second book.

Mike & Brie- I also enjoyed them, I though her trauma was handled very nicely. Small spoiler that's not even really a spoiler (view spoiler)[ What was with their wedding? There was one sentence along the lines of, "oh and on the way home f...more

A lot going on this novel...Brie, Jack's little sister and pet, has been raped and is now recovering slowly psychologically. Mike, a former womanizer, steps up to make Brie feel safe again and show her he loves her. Jack of course interferes every step of the way. Preacher is trying to get Paige knocked up but it isn't happening - the problem might be too much sex! There is a new family in Virgin River - the Booths - General Walt Booth with his teenage son Tom and his daughter Vanessa. V...more

In Carr's third Virgin River novel, Mike Valenzuela is on his way to visit family in L.A. when he learns that Brie, Jack Sheridan's youngest sister, has been raped and beaten by the defendant in a high-profile rape case she had unsuccessfully prosecuted. Mel, Virgin River's midwife, begins to suspect that a serial date rapist is preying on the girls of the community after plying them with drink and drugs, and soon Mike is on the case as Virgin River's constable. Readers of Carr's series will be...more

This third in this series is mainly about Mike and Brie. Brie is Jack's youngest sister and assistant ADA in LA. She failed to put a serial rapist in prison, her husband leaves her for her best friend, then she's attacked and raped by the serial rapist. Mike was an LAPD Sargent who was shot by a teen gang banger wannabe as a way to get into a gang! He retires to Virgin River to heal and have the comfort of his friends and leave his family and their constant hovering behind him. Mel, Jacks wife,...more

For those invested in the Virgin River series, you will not be disappointed by this latest installment. This book features Mike, a marine from the core team, and Brie, Jack's sister. Both Mike and Brie are recovering from horrific, violent crimes. After serving in the Marines in Iraq, Mike joined the LAPD. He was a decorated LAPD detective serving in the Gangs Division when he was ambushed by a 14 year old trying to get jumped into a gang, and was shot 3 times and nearly died. He was forced to r...more

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I enjoyed this one much more than the previous one. Granted, not as much as Virgin River, because it's gonna be hard to dethrone Jack and Mel, but Mike and Brie had way more dimension than Paige and Preacher.

From the get, this story began fast with Mike getting the call about what's happened to Brie. It's heart-wrenching to watch the Sheridans all come together, and how close this comes to breaking Jack. The slow progression of healing, of trusting. It got to...more

Whispering Rock, book 3 in Robyn Carr’s wonderful Virgin River series, is the story of ex-LAPD cop Mike Valenzuela and Jack Sheridan’s sister Brie, an Asst. DA. Mike is retired from duty after taking three bullets in a gang-related shooting and Brie has a double whammy of being left by her cop husband for her best friend, then being raped by a man she prosecuted who got off when the case found for the defendant. Of course, in all the Virgin River stories, there is more than just one story going...more

The Virgin River Series has captivated me from the first sentence of book 1 Virgin River through the last sentence of Book 3 Whispering Rock. I feel like I KNOW these people. Each of them has become "important" to me in some small way, and I can't wait to hear all their stories.

This book is dedicated to Mike Valenzuela and Brie Sheridan.....sort of. One of this series greatest strengths and/or weaknesses is Carr's ability to keep ALL the characters from past, present, and future involved in the...more

This is my fourth Robyn Carr book in about a week and a half. I think it's going to be a while before I read any more. So preachy. One book is all about domestic abuse. Another is about loss. This one is the rape book.

Let's see, in the year and a half since the Virgin River timeline started, lots of dramatic things have happened to the folks there. For a town of 600 people there are multiple rapes, murders, alcoholism, stalkings, beatings, kidnappings, abandoned chinlren, heart attacks, cancer...more

Whispering Rock is the third instalment in the Virgin River series and is the story of Brie Sheridan, a fiesty Prosecutor whose life is torn apart firstly by her husband leaving her for her best friend and then by being savagely assaulted and raped by a former defendant. Miguel "Mike" Valenzuela is a Marine buddy of Brie's brother Jack and a decorated LAPD policeman injured in the line of duty.Despite his past colourful relationships with women slowly he is able to rebuild Brie's confidence and...more

There's a LOT of drama going on in these books..and a lot of different people I'm having a really hard time keeping them all apart..

and the fast changes from one person to another is sometimes confusing and it's often not a new paragraph either

And he'd (Mike) be happy to have a purpose again

Here is the space and the new paragraph starts with

He signed the contract. The first person he told about it was Brie.
Tom Booth met a girl in physics who he thought might fit the bill.
HE is not Tom that part

This is more of a review of the first three books since I read them all in a row in less than a week. I do believe I have succumbed to the charms of this very popular series. I enjoy the idyllic, lively little town of Virgin River, the well drawn characters and the soap opera of all that is going on with the primary, secondary and tertiary story lines. Whisper Rock deals with not only the story of previously wounded Mike and savagely attacked Brie healing and finding love with each other, but a...more

Carr hits the sweet spot for readers who want to keep reading about their favorite characters without resorting to tedious rehashing of plots or melodramatic unbelievability. In Whispering Rock the latest wounded heroine, Brie Sheridan, gets a romance with her own ex-Marine, Mike Valenzuela, a Mexican-American former "player" who's been married twice and had innumerable female conquests. This time, the hero also suffers. Mike, an LAPD cop, nearly dies in a gang hit. Recuperating gives him time t...more

Okay, I enjoyed the first two a bit better than this one. This was a good story, but it got a bit cheesy in places. I also thought, it was Mike and Brie's story, but we got a whole lot of Jack and Mel. I like those two, but I've heard the details of their story. To the authors credit, I am reading these back to back, so may contribute to my issues.

I seriously liked the way the author addresses social issues. Rape and date rape all in one book - and, she weaves the story so you follow ve...more

On it's own this book is lame. Not much main character plot, and they weren't interesting or engaging.

That said, a LOT is going on in the epic saga that is life in Virgin River, CA. Past main characters and new ones enter and lots is going on. I'm still digging this series- but with some reservation.

Notes:
* the lack of accuracy in driving times and distances makes me crazy! While it's a fictitious town, the general area is clear enough to know it ain't no 8 hr drive to LA. (for example)

I liked this installment of the Virgin River series even though I don't usually like the plot where the hero falls for his best friend's sister. I haven't had luck reading those storylines but this was a good one. It was written well; I loved how Mike and Brie's relationship progressed...enjoyed their personalities too. Sadly they were on the backburner towards the end because like the last book, a few stories from other characters were told.

I liked the first book, but the writing style really bugged me here: a lot of tell, not show, in a very prosaic vein. Props to Carr though, for the just about unheard of positive mentions of the Morning After Pill in a romance (she actually overdoes it a bit -- it is not foolproof) and for having a HEA character actually be pretty unhappy about getting pregnant. But this went on my "minsinformation" shelf for the outdated info about increasing odds of conception.
