The Virgin River series and Whispering Rock in particular, are the type of books one reads when quiet, restful time is needed. Each one focuses on a love story set in the same small mountain town. The names in each book change but the feeling is always consistent - low key, day to day happenings with people who care about each other.

With her Virgin River series, Robyn Carr is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Whispering Rock, the third in the series, was another great book. As with the second novel in the series, this book does not really have a primary focus on the characters who are portrayed as the main ones in the synopsis, but is instead about several characters with ties to the community of Virgin River. My least favorite of the 3 Virgin River books. Not that I didn't like it - I did - I just didn't like it as much as the others.

I did love Brie and Mike together. They were a good fit for each other. Though I have to admit Mike got a little too...soft...in my opinion. But I think for the most part Carr did their relationship well. I was a bit disappointed at how they seemed to get pushed aside a bit near the end. Keep the tissues handy. All these stories are about healing, but the hardship has to happen first. Even the things that you see coming from a mile away are effective.

Carr pulls a lot of emotion out of the reader and her stories are very powerful. Mike and Brie both have pain and regrets. The things that bring them together then the evolution of their relationship made for really great reading. And plenty of tears, but lovely romance as well.

For me the Virgin River books are not just about the characters that are mentioned in the synopsis on the back of the cover. I would say those are the main focus characters of the story and they always seem to have their own unique personal dramatic problem to conquer.

When you read Virgin River you are so invested in the stories between the characters. As the books progress, not only are you introduced to a new H/H but you are also given a glimpse of the hardships and happiness of the previous characters. I enjoy reading more about Jack, Mel, Paige and Preacher and seeing what's new in their lives. I hope their stories continue throughout the rest of the series. I'm really enjoying Virgin River so far!

Another good one. Miguel "Mike" Valenzuela is almost healed from being shot 3 times by a gang banger. His best friend's little sister, Brie, is raped and beaten. First off, I wanted more Mike and Brie. Ms. Carr had built such a great foundation for this couple in Shelter Mountain that I became very excited to read Whispering Rock. And Robyn did a good job of telling the continuing story of our favorite small town, she just didn’t include enough of the story I wanted to see. This series... I like the beginning, get a little bored from the middle to the end but yet I'm always intrigued about the next one.

I skipped the first book, loved the second, but didn't like that third one quite as much...
What really bothers me is that the men in Robyn Carr's books are absolutely perfect --- they are the kindest, most caring / loving / thoughtful / patient / wonderful / selfless / understanding / respectful / undemanding / *enter positive attribute of choice here* men ever to grace this earth --- not a flaw in sight! If there's an argument they'll always quickly give in because they just know their woman is always right. I didn't notice that so much in the first book, but by the time I was halfway through this one I just couldn't keep from rolling my eyes at least once every other page. In fact, it drove me nuts! There were times when all that perfection made me want to scream and hurl this book into a corner.
To be fair, it wasn't all bad, though. There were some wonderful moments between Brie and Mike, especially in the first half of the book. I really liked them together! However, I found Mel and Jack to be somewhat annoying in this book, and there were some side stories that I didn't much care for. Also, the dialogue was way too cheesy and unbelievable sometimes. And hey --- what's up with everyone getting pregnant (or at least wanting to get pregnant) rightaway? It seems a little as if Ms. Carr thinks that if you're in a relationship you should have a baby, like, the minute it starts to get serious.
There is no doubt that Robyn Carr is a good writer. They're all pretty formulaic (so far, in every book there's been an ex-marine who helps a traumatized woman rediscover love and the joy of life ...), and it's starting to get real old real fast.
I won't give up and try the next one!(less)

Robyn Carr hat mal wieder alle Register gezogen und Virgin River erneut zu einem sehr liebevoll beschriebenen Ort gemacht, den ich sehr gerne immer wieder in Buchform besuche. Allerdings liest sich die Fortsetzung etwas anders als die bisherigen Bände, denn nun wird die Geschichte aus mehreren Sichten erzählt, anstatt immer nur aus ein bis zwei Perspektiven. Dies fand ich besonders gut, weil neue Charaktere so sehr gut eingeführt wurden und man bereits bekannte Charaktere noch besser kennen lernen konnte - und dabei habe ich Charaktereigenschaften entdeckt, die bislang eher nicht bekannt waren.

Besonders auffällig ist es bei Jack, der in diesem Band recht verändert rüber kommt. Bislang war er ein sehr ausgeglichener Mann, der mit jedem Bewohner gut auskommt und alles stets locker sieht. Allerdings reagiert er bei Brie und Mike alles andere als gelassen, vielmehr wirkt er sehr steif und verbissen, was so gar nicht zu seinem bisherigen Charakter passt. Auch wenn ich Jack in diesem Buch etwas weniger mochte als sonst, bleibt er dennoch ein gern gelesener Protagonist.

Neben Mike und Brie lernt man in diesem Buch die beiden Schüler Tommy und Brenda kennen, die bislang gänzlich unbekannt waren. Letztere lernt man eher im Hintergrund kennen, was jedoch ausreichend ist, da das Hauptaugenmerk hier klar auf Brie und Mike gerichtet ist. Beide stehen Jack sehr nahe, Mike ist einer seiner besten Freunde und Brie ist seine jüngste Schwester, auf die er besonders gut aufpassen möchte. Sie haben eine schwere Zeit durchgemacht. Während Mike bei einem Polizeieinsatz lebensbedrohlich verletzt wurde, muss sich Brie von einer Vergewaltigung erholen, die ihr ein ehemaliger Angeklagter angetan hat. Während Mike förmlich nach Virgin River geflüchtet ist und dort noch einmal von vorne anfangen möchte, fährt Brie eher mit gemischten Gefühlen nach Virgin River, um auf das Baby von Jack und Mel aufzupassen, während sie für ein paar Tage die Stadt verlassen.
Ihre jeweiligen Geschichten werden authentisch und ausführlich dargestellt. Während man beide bereits aus den Vorbänden als Nebenfiguren kennen lernen durfte, haben beide nun ihre nötige Zeit erhalten, um dem Leser ausführlich bekannt gemacht zu werden.

Allerdings wurden selbst mir die Handlungsstränge am Ende doch zu viel. Zwar haben alle Stränge eine Verbindung zueinander, aber bis diese endgültig zusammengeknüpft sind, dauert es eine Weile, was stellenweise dann doch zu vollgepackt wirkt. Jedoch hat Robyn Carr es erneut geschafft, dass jede Seite etwas Besonderes ist, wovon ich nur sehr selten losgekommen bin. Die Autorin bleibt sich und ihren Charakteren treu und schafft eine perfekte Mischung aus alten und neuen Charakteren, sowie die allgemeine Entwicklung der Stadt Virgin River.

Die Covergestaltung ist wunderschön und übertrifft erneut das Originalcover. Die warmen Farben und der See geben zusammen ein romantisches Bild ab, welches man sehr gerne live erleben möchte. Ein Kritikpunkt ist jedoch die Kurzbeschreibung, die mir zu sehr in die Irre führt, da es in diesem Buch alles andere als nur um Brie geht. Es wäre schön gewesen, wenn man sich nicht nur auf sie fixiert hätte, da man sonst schnell falsche Erwartungen hat.

Insgesamt konnte mich auch dieser Band der Virgin River Reihe voll und ganz überzeugen. Sympathische Charaktere und eine wunderbar beschriebene Kleinstadt machen diese Reihe zu einem großartigen Erlebnis, das man nicht missen mag. Ich freue mich auf den vierten Band, der sich bereits in meinem Besitz befindet.(less)

Review: I was really waiting for this book to come out and I thank Mira for publishing the three books a month apart from each other. I don't think I could have waited a year between the books. I like this book as well and thought it was a nice ending... although Ms Carr has opened the door for another sequel in my opinion. It is a bit an open ending.

The Characters - This book's focus is on Brie and Mike. We have met both characters in the previous books, both being loves one of Jack. Mike is now back on his two feet and healthy and has decided to live a relaxing life in Virgin River. He is then asked to become Virgin River's constable, a position he accepts. He's been interested in Brie for quite a while and when learning of her assault, rush to her side. Mike was described as a huge player in previous books and although he probably was, it doesn't show much in this book. Of course, he's smooth and charming, but I think that his accident really changed him and of course, there's not many available women in Virgin River. One thing that annoyed me was the fact that everyone associated his playboy-ness with his two failed marriages. In my opinions, Mike really wasn't at fault for the failed marriage...

As for Brie, I think she's a tough girl and I never doubt she would be able to get her life back. I have to admit that I liked her strength. What helped in enjoying the book is that I thought her whole ordeal was quite realistic. So yeah, not a kick-ass heroine, nor a TSTL one. Just a normal person with a very level head. That was quite refreshing LOL Of course, Mike and Brie had to share the spotlight with other characters. We do see Jack, Mel, Paige and Preacher again and if you enjoyed them in previous book, you will in this one too.

The Story & Writing - there are many storylines in this one, aside from Mike and Brie. There's Paige and Preacher trying to have a kid, Jack and Mel and their family life. There's also some new characters (Vanessa and Paul) and some intrigue concerning high schoolers. All in all, it was quite interesting :D I really liked the pacing as well and how Ms Carr blend all the storylines together. I wish she would write more :P

The Cover - Nice one and it fit with the rest of the series.

After serving in the Marines in Iraq, Mike joined the LAPD. He was forced to retire from the force due to limited mobility after the shooting. He moves out to Virgin River to find the space and peace he needs to work through his recovery, physically and emotionally. Not long after his move, Jack's sister Brie, a Sacremento based ADA, loses a big case against a serial rapist. About that time her husband tells her he is leaving her and moving in with her best friend, who he has been having an affair with. Devastated by both the case and her impending divorce, Brie flees the city to find some solitude with her family in Virgin River. What she finds instead is the right kind friendship and support she needs from the most unlikely source - a former womanizer in Mike. Other sub-stories include the new family in town, the Booths - Walt, a retired Army general, his son Tommy and daughter Vanni. Both Tommy and Vanni are featured in 2 of the sub-stories and I enjoyed both of their stories very much. Tommy is a senior in high school and just trying to get through his senior year in high school before starting at West Point. He meets Brenda a junior and falls in love. Not long after, he uncovers a date rapist preying on girls in the community and with the support of Mike (now acting a Virgin River's town constable), takes action to stop him. Vanni, his older sister, is married and pregnant. She is living with her father and brother since her husband, a marine, is deployed in Iraq. In Virgin River, she has the added support of Jack and their squad of former marines, especially Paul - her husband's best friend, who is a contractor in town helping Jack to build a new home. As is always the case in these books, there is plenty of drama to go around and it is enough to keep you reading long into the night. This is another great book in the series. I'm off to read Book 4 now as I am now officially a Virgin River addict!

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I enjoyed this one much more than the previous one. Granted, not as much as Virgin River, because it's gonna be hard to dethrone Jack and Mel, but Mike and Brie had way more dimension than Paige and Preacher.

This is my fourth Robyn Carr book in about a week and a half. I think it's going to be a while before I read any more. So preachy. One book is all about domestic abuse. Another is about loss. This one is the rape book.

There's a LOT of drama going on in these books..and a lot of different people I'm having a really hard time keeping them all apart..

and the fast changes from one person to another is sometimes confusing and it's often not a new paragraph either

This is more of a review of the first three books since I read them all in a row in less than a week. I do believe I have succumbed to the charms of this very popular series. Okay, I enjoyed the first two a bit better than this one. This was a good story, but it got a bit cheesy in places. I also thought, it was Mike and Brie's story, but we got a whole lot of Jack and Mel. I like those two, but I've heard the details of their story. To the authors credit, I am reading these back to back, so may contribute to my issues.

On it's own this book is lame. Not much main character plot, and they weren't interesting or engaging.

That said, a LOT is going on in the epic saga that is life in Virgin River, CA. Past main characters and new ones enter and lots is going on. I'm still digging this series- but with some reservation.

Notes:
* the lack of accuracy in driving times and distances makes me crazy! While it's a fictitious town, the general area is clear enough to know it ain't no 8 hr drive to LA. (for example)

I liked this installment of the Virgin River series even though I don't usually like the plot where the hero falls for his best friend's sister. I haven't had luck reading those storylines but this was a good one. It was written well; I loved how Mike and Brie's relationship progressed...enjoyed their personalities too. Sadly they were on the backburner towards the end because like the last book, a few stories from other characters were told.

Shelves: misinformation

I liked the first book, but the writing style really bugged me here: a lot of tell, not show, in a very prosaic vein. Props to Carr though, for the just about unheard of positive mentions of the Morning After Pill in a romance (she actually overdoes it a bit -- it is not foolproof) and for having a HEA character actually be pretty unhappy about getting pregnant. But this went on my "minsinformation" shelf for the outdated info about increasing odds of conception.
