I first became aware of the Courtney Crumrin series when I saw it compared to Tom Siddell's brilliant Gunnerkrigg Court graphic novels (originally a web-comic), which I absolutely adore. When a goodreads friend also had good things to say about the Courtney Crumrin comic, I decided I needed to give these books a try, and I'm glad that I did!

Any book where children occasionally get eaten by night creatures without any apologies by the author is okay in my book! Courtney is such a fantastic character. Wish I was half as badass as she is! (Though personally I am happy I have a nose. Why does she have no nose?! Why did I not even notice she didn't have a nose until someone pointed it out to me?!)
I had read the four chapters that comprise this initial volume of the adventures of Courtney Crumrin as they had originally appeared in single issues. I had found the series amusing but nothing spectacular. It's grim and fun, but shows little staying power.
Which is why it took me so long to review the collection.

I stumbled across this series in the comic store, where I picked up one of the later books. I liked the style so I bought the first two volumes. And they did not disappoint. This book is very dark (horrible things actually happen to people, and this is just shrugged off by those who know about it), but it's also about being an individual and not worrying too much about what others think. Courtney's a great character. I did think her parents were a bit overdone. Yeah, we get it--they're superfici...more
A friend of mine sent me home with this graphic novel back in October. Even though I don't usually won't when someone has lent me a book, he requested that I not read it in the bathtub. That being the case, it has taken be this long to get to it. While over at this house eating lasagne and watching horror movies, he brought it back to my attention. He said that it was a quick read, which I already figured given the page numbers and the simple fact that it is a graphic novel. After finishing...more

"Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things: Volume 1" is rife with dark humor and imaginative interactions, much of which I enjoyed for the most part. I wouldn't say it's the most engaging comic I've ever come across for its genre, but it is entertaining for an introductory read, and one I'd likely continue to see what happens.

Courtney and her parents have just moved to the rich suburbs to live with Courtney’s uncle in his eerie old house. Things are not going well for Courtney. She can’t make friends, her teachers hate her, and there are monsters in her room. When she mentions she can’t sleep to her uncle, she finds out about his dabbling in witchcraft and tries out some of the spells on her own.

Fun dark, gothic, graphic novel.
The artwork is stellar and the characterization of Courtney Crumrin kept me laughing throughout the book.

Courtney Crumrin is being forced to move to a more upscale suburb by her slightly opportunistic and always oblivious parents to live with her Uncle Aloysius. Thing is, though, Courtney isn't your average mall kid, the new house isn't your your modern day McMansion, and Uncle Aloysius isn't your typical crusty old coot - good thing, too, because when things start getting weird, Ucle Aloysius may be the only one standing between Courtney and disaster.

Courtney Crumrin was forced by her parents to move to her great uncle's home, or was it her great, great uncle? No one's quite sure to be honest but all Courtney can remember of her times there before were that the place was quite odd and it hasn't gotten any better. And as uninviting as his home is, her great uncle is just as uninviting. As she stays in the house of her Uncle Crumrin she has many adventures, or misadventures while living there and she learns quite a lot about herself and her...more
From a parent's point of view:
I thought that this was a pretty cute book, and I like that my kids are really enjoying Manga. It's an easy read for them and something that they can read in between other books to boost their confidence. I wasn't crazy about the content in this book, though, and if I had read it before my daughter, I probably wouldn't have given it to her. The age recommendation on the book is for ages 7 and up, but I found the language a bit much, and the content wa...more

Here is yet another story introducing a young character to a secret magical world, but Naifeh puts forth an above-average effort in capturing the perspective of an extraordinary girl, making it more engrossing for younger readers while losing none of the wit or edge necessary to charm those older than the heroine.

A creepy graphic novel with a good mix of reality and fantasy. Courtney and her parents have just moved in with her great-uncle, the mysterious Professor Crumrin, and Courtney is having a hard time adjusting. By nature an outsider, being new makes her transition to the new town
and school all the more difficult. Right away at school she meets the bullies, and realizes the one boy who is nice to her is really the ultimate nerd of the school. And at home her parents are off in their own world...more

Eh.
The plot was meh (pretty predictable). The characters were meh (although I actually liked the parents since they were so self-absorbed in trying to fit in with the rest of gentry that it was both amusing and pathetic to read about).
The art was decent. However, I had a big issue with Courtney's face. While everyone else's faces were relatively normal looking with chins and whatnot, Courtney's face was basically a rounded blob that sometimes was more square-ish with rounde...more

I loved this story. Courtney's courageous, smart and has a lot of spunk. If your looking for something that's got a little bit of a creep factor, but enjoyable even for younger readers I recommend this one.
This story opens up with Courtney and her parents moving to a posh part of town to live with their Uncle Aloysius. In the opening pages Aloysius is described to us by a gremlin creature Butterworm

Courtney moves into a gothic mansion with strange noises and a fey forest right outside her door. "Harry Potter," this is not. After Courtney's only kind-of friend is eaten by a goblin in the woods, she decides that she's not going to put up with the trouble in her life, both everyday and supernatural. With a book of spells she "borrows" from her uncle, she takes on school bullies with the aid of a goblin, tries to make friends with a magic spell, baby-sits a changeling, and ...more
Courney Crumrin tells the story of the eponymous girl, middle-school-aged, who discovers that her mysterious uncle is actually a wizard of some sort. She begins dabbling in the occult arts and nearly gets herself killed, enslaved, and blown up. In other words, she has a whole lot of fun.

I was sucked into the story right away! Courtney's parents, living well beyond their means, jump at the chance to live rent free at Great Uncle Aloysius's creepy old mansion that happens to be in the rich area of town. Having use of the lower floors but strictly forbidden to enter his upper domain the parents settle in. Courtney can't make friends at school due to her association with the Crumrin house and she hears things in the night. This leads to her snooping around and finding an old book w...more
I got an eGalley of this book through NetGalley.com. It was a really excellent graphic novel filled with mystery, some creepy things, and magic. After reading it I want to go out and read all of the other books in the series.
Courtney Crumrin is forced to move into her great-uncle's old creepy house with her parents (who are broke and need a place to live). To say that Courtney doesn't fit in in this prestigious town and preppy school is an understatement. Then one night Courtney ...more

This was about a girl who sees herself as an outsider. Her and her ditzy social climbing parents move into her great uncle's house so that they can live rent free (and also so her uncle can change his reputation; he wants to be perceived as harmless). Courtney encounters all kinds of mysterious night creatures and gets herself into some serious scrapes one of which her uncle gets her out of. The story pulls from many old celtic fairie myths, such as changlings, and goblins. At the end of the...more
I read this book this summer with a very reluctant reader in the 8th grade. At first he wasn't sure it was O.K. to call a "comic" a book, but by the end of the summer he not only read this book but the other two that follow in the series.
I read along with him and liked Courtney and her anti-Harry Potter antics. I found her parents rather repulsive, in that they were truly shallow and materialistic. The pictures were fun and I notices that even those characters who were ...more

This is a cute little graphic novel about a middle schooler, Courtney Crumrin who moves with her parents into the old, spooky house of her great uncle who has an unusual hobby--occult. She runs into all sorts of trouble with goblins, changelings, and by casting her own spells.

Ted Nafieh paints a wonderfully gothic picture that channels the best parts of Mike Mignola's Hellboy and Emily the Strange, populating a world of creepy victorian mansions, imposing elder forrests, exotic mystical marketplaces, and fantastic creaures that live in a world on the fringe of our own.

I have never read a graphic novel before this book, nor did I have any interest in doing so. I assumed that all graphic novels were written specifically for teenaged boys, with a lot of BANG!, POW! and ZOWIE! inserted into the picture during a ridiculous fight scene between two even more absurd characters. I also thought they all had to do with Superheroes and Villians like the Marvel comics or they were all Japanese Anime; I couldn't have been more wrong. I ended up really really enjoying th...more
Courtney can be annoyingly persistent at turning everything into a bad time, but then again she is a teenager in high school. I like this series a lot, but I'm not quite sure exactly why. The characters are fairly predictable but I like the general plotline and the humor infused throughout the whole thing. What can I say, I can't turn down a book with dark humor, magic, creepy creatures, and a mysterious relative.

Courtney Crumrin and The Night Things is one of those graphic novels that catches your attention from page one. The artwork is amazing through its simplicity; the characters are unique, and the story is fascinating.
I really got attached to Courtney, and I’ll admit that I’m jealous of her. I wish I could live in her world... Any person should have his or her own monster buddies, don’t you think?

Good stuff. I was first introduced to Ted Naifeh through his work on Tristan Crane's "How Loathsome," one of the few comix to portray trans characters convincingly and respectfully. The art in this series is very different -- less realistic, cleaner lines -- but the irreverent, dark humor is in full effect. Courtney's an outsider in the straight world but she's learning how to navigate the world of ghouls & goblins with some help from her mysterious uncle & his library. Sometimes she g...more

I don’t read many graphic novels – if I had to guess, I’d say I read maybe five a year – but when I saw Courtney Crumrin, Volume 1 on NetGalley, I was intrigued. A dark, twisted story with plenty of humor, I really enjoyed reading this one.
