I had read the four chapters that comprise this initial volume of the adventures of Courtney Crumrin as they had originally appeared in single issues. I had found the series amusing but nothing spectacular. It's grim and fun, but shows little staying power.
Which is why it took me so long to review the collection.
I had purchased the first two volumes of the series in a fit of patriotism (participating in wild consumer endeavors is the best way to show ones support of the establishment). T...more

Courtney's move to the richy suburbs does not make her happy - especially when she sees the eerie house she has to live in and loony uncle she has to live with. And like other teenage girls I've known (myself included) she just does not seem to fit in anywhere - not with her parents, not with the other kids at school.
Things are afoot, however. Courtney comes to find that nasty sorts of creatures lurk in and around her new home - and as Courtney faces her fear of those monsters in the night, ...more

Fans of Gothy comics and/or grumpy young people.
A potentially ya-comic -- a little gorey, and the stories are eliptical enough that younger readers might have a little trouble following them, but these collections (3 so far) should work for at least mid-teens onup. . The heroine is clever and focued, but with enough negative qualities (her snarkiness is amusing, but it gets her reasonably realistically into trouble that she could have avoided) to be sympathetic. The stories are reasonably twisty, with reasonably satisfying pay-offs. Probably ...more

Light-hearted, yet not stupidly so. Fun. There are interesting characters that I wanted to know a little more about (namely the grand-uncle, though the girl's parents definitely made an impression on me) -- so I'm curious whether the rest of this series will be as episodic.
The art's beautiful. I'm a sucker for well done black-white-only artwork. Many artists err on being either too simplistic for my tastes, or they are not able to work the negative and positive space in a way that doesn't c...more

This strange, dark little graphic novel was fun! I definitely plan to read the rest of the series. The one thing that knocked a fourth star off my rating, though, was the fact that the art could sometimes get a little confusing -- it was hard to tell what was going on in some of the more action-packed sequences. That happens quite a bit in b&w graphic novels and it definitely wasn't as bad as some manga I've read. Don't let it deter you from reading the book, especially if you tend to id...more

I love Courtney Crumrin. This whole series is charming and fun, but with that dark toothy smile that resonates so deeply in my soul. Courtney Crumrin, our protagonist, is like a cross between Mandy (The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy) and Harry Potter. She's got style and nerve and a defiant attitude that makes me grin. Courtney's my kind of bitch and her magical misadventures are well-told, well-drawn, and vividly imagined.

Courtney is a middle schooler who's parents are dumb and bad with money, so they had to move into her great uncle's house in the middle of a really rich neighborhood. Her classmates are spoiled and she only manages to make one friend. There are monsters in the woods, her uncle is probably a wizard and very old, everyone thinks her uncle's house is haunted and her parents have volunteered her to babysit. It's a bit like the movie Casper, but Courtney has much more attitude and nerve.

Snarky little goth Courtney is pretty ticked when her bourgeois social-climbing parents decide to move in with her elderly uncle -- you know, the creepy guy in the dilapidated house with the turrets. Crisp black-and-white artwork seems to get more detailed when Courtney's only new friend disappears, and things become a little more goth than she's expecting. If a preteen Willow met Giles earlier and stepped into Pan's Labyrinth... it still wouldn't be this much fun.

I loved this book. It had illustrations like in the first Gloomcookie book that I read and it was funny. Full of fantasy and horror elements, Courtney is a loner and would like to keep it that way. She has moved in with her supposedly crazy uncle whom she has found has an obsession with things that go bump in the night. They end up getting along famously, her parents oblivious to everything going on around them. Can't wait to read more of these!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and marked it as one of my favorite graphic novels of all time! Until, sigh...
I met the author at Comicon 2007 and he was not nice at all. He was so cocky! His agent needs to get him to take a proper fan etiquette course!
I know it still doesn't take the content away from the book, but every time I see it I just think of that moment.

Goth girls should enjoy reading about Courtney Crumrin's adventures in the magical realm. Her classmates are mean, her parents are superficial and clueless, but her uncle is an ancient wizard and his books provide endless hours of entertainment and mischief for young Miss Crumrin.

This booked marked the first time that I brought a book home to read it myself, and had it stolen off of the dining room table by my then-7-yr-old son! I think it was a tiny bit old for him at the time (due to some scary stuff), but he seemed to enjoy the whole trilogy anyway.

I really liked the Courtney Crumrin graphic novels. It's about a litte girl who happens to be a witch. What isn't there to like??

great series, like a darker, edgier, angrier female harry potter who's not really all about being just and righteous...
