Despite the glossy pink cover, I would not classify this book as "chick-lit", though I gather that some people have, apparently solely on the basis that it was written by a woman about women. Personally, I classify chicklit as being the more light-hearted chocolate-and-boyfriends kind of story. This reminded me more of Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, although more modern, more sexually entangled, and less of a classic.

Interesting book with some strange twists to the story. Loved all the psychiatry and the way the story switched between mother and daughter. Definitely funny how their take on things was different yet similar. Enjoyable read, all in all.

This book was a Hartwell WI bookclub read for April and a Library Book.
It was not the most thrilling story - set mainly from the angle of the Stepmother's Mother talking about her daughters life and reading her diaries. I felt it was something and nothing really -I didn't particularly bond with any of the characters and wasn't very interested about what was happening - and was pleased to finish the book and move onto something more interesting.

Miserable people living in a strange place I didn't recognise. The quality of Ms. W's writing has never made up for her mean spirited characters and poor plots imho.

Fay Weldon in her usual satiric voice looks a the complications of blended families and generational quandries. Not one of her best but worth a read.

OTT plot containing everyone's worst anxieties about stepmothering, second wives and parenting generally. Probably in production as a Hollywood film.

Must admit that for the first time in years, this book was shelved. I tried and tried to get into it but couldn't. Therefore I can't comment very constructively as I didn't see it through. Sure that is down to personal preference.....
