I only understood a fraction of what this book had to say, which is a bummer because it was so fascinating. Reading about how astronomers can use different types of observations (UV, gamma rays, radio, etc) to see different features of the starfield around the black hole makes one (well, this one, anyway) marvel at the tools we have available and the clever uses that they are put to by clever minds.

The book also takes a detour into Newtonian and Einsteinian physics and a bit of quantum mechanics

Good. Readable. Fairly concise. Needed better editing. Melia often repeats himself, sometimes from paragraph to paragraph in a way that suggests it was cut and pasted together from different lecture notes, papers, etc... Even given that, still quite good.

Fulvio Melia is an Italian-American physicist/astrophysicist and author. He is Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Arizona and Associate Editor of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. A former Presidential Young Investigator and Sloan Research Fellow, he is the author of six books and more than 230 articles on theoretical astrophysics.
