I have read the book What World is Left by Monique Polak. This book is about the life of a Jewish girl in WWII. She has to work everyday. She misses her old life very much. She learns how to live in a labor camp and is constantly scared that any one of her family members or friends will get a yellow slip of paper under their mattress. Want to know what that yellow slip says? Read the book!

I liked how the author was so detailed about everything. Some people might find it annoying, but I More...

Anneke and her family live a privileged life in Amsterdam.

She and her brother go to school, wear fine clothes, and never want for anything. Their world is turned upside down after the Nazis take control of Holland. They are forced to wear yellow stars on their clothing, they must attend a Jewish school instead of their own, and, inevitably, are forced to relocate to Theresienstadt, a "model" concentration camp in Czechosl More...

This book is fantastic. Based on the author's mother's experience in Therezinstadt, this ifs a very emotional and realistic view of life in the "model city". If you're looking for the "concentration camp" structure, you're going to be surprised. Instead of solely creating fictional characters, the author also references real people, like the artist Petr Kien. Prior to this novel, I never even knew that Therezinstadt existed, and it breaks my heart to know that it did. Th More...

After winning a grant from the Conseil des arts et des Lettres du Quebec, the author took advantage of the opportunity to further explore her mother's experiences during the war. The result is this young adult novel.

Anneke Van Raalte is living with her parents and her younger brother in Holland as the full force of the Holocaust kicks in. The newly arrived German conquerors arrange to have them shipped to Theresienstadt, a community in Czecholsovakia named after the Empress Maria The More...

REVIEW FOR WHAT WORLD IS LEFT BY MONIQUE POLAK

This book is an emotional and turbulent story painting a picture of the concentration camps in the time of World War II, and the plot revolves around a young girl named Anneke, who's Jewish family is sent to Therienstadt, a 'model' camp that's supposedly better than other death camps in Europe. While living there, Anneke goes through an emotional phase of growing up, maturity, and learning to believe in hope. Based on a true story of the More...

I didn't really like this book.

First of all, it starts off when Anneke is already in a concentration camp.
Following that is a series of confusing flashbacks, replaying how she got into the concentration camp. The beginning of the book would be alot more interesting if it just started with Anneke at home and then the Nazis come.

Polak's account of her mother's years in Theresienstadt sheds a different light on the Holocaust. It's interesting to consider how Polak's relatives fared better than many others, yet they still experienced tremendous suffering. The supposedly "lucky ones" were often manipulated and used as sources of propaganda by the Nazis.

An intriguing work of fiction based on the author's mother's life in a bizarre Nazi work camp in the Czech Republic. It was used as a model Jewish city for a propaganda film. Bizarre b/c some families stay together, children and old people reside here, and the sick are given care and thus a chance to recover.

I picked this up to read something serious in between all the fun novels I've been reading. It isn't really an enjoyable read (obviously since it's about a Jewish family living in a concentration camp). I like The Hiding Place much better, but it was still a good depiction of what went on.

A much needed book added to Holocaust literature for young people. What World is Left is a based-on-true-events novel set in Theresiendstadt, the "model city" camp. Theresiendstadt was set up to show the world the the Nazis weren't "monsters." Right...read on.

Pretty well written, takes place not in one of the death camps, but in the concentration camp, "Theresienstadt", which was used for world war II german propaganda as a "model" camp.

Very interesting read about what life was like in a concentration camp for a child. Definately a young adult book though. I would not read this aloud to my 10 year old.

I felt like at least one of the family members should have died, and Anneke's relationship with the guy who left made little sense.

Holocaust survivor book. Good pre-teen read. Not too gruesome for your preteen but written well enough to give kids the idea that it was bad.
