Lorenzo Berardi
This book begs for patient readers and plenty of spare time.
True, I have much of the latter at the moment, but lately I'm not focused enough on my reading to appreciate such a complex and in-depth narration of the Chechen wars.

The point is that Wojciech Jagielski turned out to be very demanding with his readers here. You cannot simply leaf through 'Towers of Stone' casually with your pencil underlining selected passages as if you're reading your average good Polish reportage.
Unlike most of th

Good for understanding who's who in the Chechnya conflict but... there's not much action. Which is, in a way, interesting. Not everyone here is a terrorist, most are average people who just try to somehow cope with their lives under very difficult circumstances. Most of the book is about sitting and waiting - for the war to start, for the war to end, for the partizans to come, for the partizans to leave, for a politician to make a statement, for the seasons to change. The villagers don't have mu ...more

The book meanders a bit, but that doesn't matter much for the uninitiated. This is great for explaining several key players in the Chechen wars, and touches on some of the events in between. Heartbreaking in many ways because once you go to war in/with Russia, everybody who sticks around long enough pretty much ends up dead.

Wojciech Jagielski is a journalist specialised in Caucasian relations especially Chechnya. Mowing story about life in Chechnya - a group of independent and proud warriors, relations the leader Shamil Basaev and Aslan Maschadov and how common people see them both. Jagielski used a style similiar to Kapuściński - personal tales are important, not great politics.
