I picked this up when I was thinking about preaching about St. Francis last week - turns out I decided to talk about IKEA and tell a dating story. But I'm glad I read the book, if only because Chesterton is so hilariously crotchety and interesting: this old donnish grandfather who sits in his study nibbling on his pen and comes out with brilliant work but ink spilled all over his tweeds and cold stewed tea. And will someone please read the second chapter and tell me if he's making veiled refer...more

G.K Chesterton is my favorite newly discovered Christian writer. Like CS Lewis, he is aware of his failing humanity, and also so keenly in love with God and faith. I am not that far in, but this is shaping up to be a really great read...

I want to give this book more than 3 stars due to the labyrinths of paradoxes Chesterton leads the reader through like a crazed Pied Piper. But that's just the problem. Like Proust, you end up tolerating Chesterton for the one single flash of insight he provides every 1-2 pages.
More of a tribute to Francis than a biography, but overall a good read

Dense to read, but an excellent provider of insight into the famous saint's life. Provides religious guidance as well as historical context.
I'd Challenge non-Catholics to find anything reprehensible or tainted in Chesterton's treatment of his subject.

One of the greatest biographies I've ever read. Not because I learned much about Frankie-boy, but Chesterton rocks my face off, in the true 90s sense of the phrase.

At the most difficult time of my life this book was God sent, and one of many experiences which lifted me out of the mire, and set me on the path of life.

I am about 2/5ths in. The discussion of why moderns don't understand the middle ages is really, really good.
