I found this book to be a good, concise reference on infants and toddler language skills. I haven't read the whole book, but I read the introductory sections, and I find myself referring back to the book occasionally to check in on where my kids are, and how I can help. It also has sections on language influences (e.g. birth order), delays, sign language and pre-literacy skills. I think it stays at a good level - concise, but usually includes what I would want to know.
