Very good book by a flexible but committed author examining the possibilities of humanist Marxism associated with the early Castro state and Yugoslavia as well as the New Left and revived Trotskyist movements, Maoism as it actually existed in China, and stating what exactly Soviet ideology at the time (the '70s) consisted of. Leonhard was associated with the Yugoslav communist movement before emigrating to the U.S.

I enjoyed the straight-forward, non-complex style of the writing in this book. Based on the subject matter, I expected more difficult reading.

German political author, publicist, and historian.

Leonhard was a former communist, who fled to the Soviet Union in 1935. Where he came part of the "National Committee for the liberation of Germany" In 1945 he came back to East-Germany as part of the "Ulbricht group" which was an special command of politicians and instructors.

In 1949 Leonhard defected from the Soviet Union and fled first to Yugosla
