My daughter read The Island of The Skog to me for her school homework assignment and I must say we both tremendously enjoyed this book. Not only was the story about mice trying to find freedom entertaining, the illustrations were quite fine as well. I was certainly surprised to find out who the skog on the island really was and if you and your child like a little bit of mystery you will get this book and find out who the skog is for your selves. As a side note, I was excited to see that this cop...more

“The Island of the Skog” is a very cute book about mice that sail to a deserted island to start a new life away from the harassment of the cats. Once they get there however, they discover that the island isn’t as deserted as they thought, and now have to deal with the island’s inhabitant – the Skog. The mice learn a valuable lesson about judging others, jumping to conclusions and how to live together peacefully with others that are different them themselves. This boo...more

I am finding it very interesting to watch as my kids pick authors or illustrators that the really love. My son loved books by Margaret Wise Brown for the longest time and is still a huge Mo Willems fan.
I myself have been a fan of Steven Kellogg's detailed artwork for years but my son never seemed interested in his books. Recently my daughter picked up a Steven Kellogg book and carried it around with her for weeks declaring to anyone who would listen that it was her favorite book, ever! So, I fi...more

I first encountered Stephen Kellogg's illustrations in Is Your Mama a Llama - one of our very favorite bed time stories. I've since explored a lot of his other work and have come to the conclusion that he's at his strongest when his stories feature an all-animal cast of characters. I just don't like the way he depicts most human characters. There are a few exceptions - most notably his version of Jack and the Beanstalk which I find very appealing.

This is a story about a band of city mice who hav...more

I have always loved Steven Kellogg illustrations. There's so much to be seen that certainly cannot be conveyed during a storytime. And the stories that he writes can be very interesting and entertaining. This one was quite adventurous and I had no idea what to expect in it. But I found myself laughing for different reasons throughout the story. I like the skog.

The picture of the skog in disguise made such an impression on me as a young child, that I could still remember it in detail decades later.
The story is one that all young children should know: It teaches you that something you are scared of may be just as scared of you.

I love Steven Kellogg's books, especially his detailed illustrations. When I was in elementary school, I sent him a valentine and he wrote back to me. Island of the Skog is my favorite, though. I love the story, the moral, the illustrations - it's great!

Collin LOVED this book so much that he acts out the scog island quite often. It wasn't as fun to read as an adult, but Collin loved it. I always have to make a note of books he wants to act out at home after we take them back to the library.

Great book to include the help of a school administrator! Have the administrator dress like a "Skog" and creep behind the reader as he or she is reading. The students will go wild, and the teacher will not admit that anything was there! So fun.

An original story, The island of the Skog (1973), is a fantasy adventure of a group of mice who sail away to a peaceful island to live free of the fears of life in the city. Characteristic Kellogg humor abounds in the detailed illustration of the city cats and rats crowded at the pier to watch them go; one holding a sign “good riddance,” while a sunglass bespectacled rat wearing a “riff-raff rat club” t-shirt raises a fist in farewell. The mice must overcome their fear of the strange skog, the l...more

Picture book from The Read-Aloud Handbook. Mice sail away to an island inhabited by a Skog, who is not so scary after all. Illustrations just keep going and going, so be prepared to stop and look at all the bits and pieces!

This book is pretty cute! There's a lot that goes on, and there are some unanswered questions, but there's a moral to the story that's heartwarming and sweet. The illustrations are extremely detailed and pretty.

I loved this book as a kid, and now love reading it to my daughter. Beautiful illustrations with lots to see, good message, and some strong female characters, which can be an issue for kids books.

Once again, Steven Kellogg doesn't fail me. He is my new all-time favorite author and illustrator. The stories are a bit odd, but just strange ebough to make the kids love them!

One of my personal favorites. The use of space and perspective in this story is wonderful. This book can talk about how first impressions aren't always right.

For a good scary book, try The Island of the Skog . A group of mice must face a creepy monster and the illustrations bring the monster to life.

One of my all time favorite picture books to read aloud to kids about fears and friendship. One that should be on every library shelf.

I always confuse this book with "Where the Wild Things Are". I've actually never read that. I have read this... (I think)
Phil
My absolute favorite book when I was a kid. I still have my copy of it, as a matter of fact.

If you like this book, I recommend that you go to the Library of Congress website and watch the author, Steven Kellogg, tell this story while he illustrates it live on stage.

My sister made me a recording of this book (with sound effects) when I was super little. I can barely remember the story, but it was the coolest tape I ever owned.
