Jocelyn Minton is a woman torn between two worlds. Her mother grew up attending private schools and afternoon teas, but she married the local handyman. Not sure why I keep trying this author. When I was much younger, I used to like her historical romances for light diversion from grad school. HEr writing evolved, and she wrote a couple of books with time travel in the plot that I really enjoyed (Knight in Shining Armor is one that comes to mind. But for the last few years, every time someone leaves a book of hers on a OBCZ shelf or gives me a copy of one of her books to BookCross, and I read it, I've been terribly disappointed. This one certain...more

Audiobook Review. Lavender Morning is the story of a girl who inherits a large home in Maine from her mentor, an elderly woman the main character has spent her life adoring. The story reveals the mentor's life, WWII fiction, and the main character's search for explanations. I'll not provide any spoilers beyond this fundamental information, which you'll get from simply reading a blurb. The story is a touching memoir to this elderly lady, her unrequited love of WWII. It's not a good audiobook, in...more

My Rating: 2.5

After reading some of Jude Deveraux's Edilean series and loving them, I decided to try Lavender Morning, the book that began it all. To my disbelief, I didn't love the book at all. Unlike Jude Deveraux's other books, Lavender Morning was draggy, long, and boring. The romance was a major disappointment too and the ending wasn't satisfying at all. To sum it all up, Lavender Morning was a bunch of fluff.

I loved the way Jocelyn and Luke had a rough start - Jocelyn because she thought...more

Jude Deveraux used to be a quite good author. Not anymore. In fact, reading this I had the disturbing feeling she was using a ghost writer, a really talentless one. The plot is supposed to convoluted, intriguing, romantic, suspenseful and surprising. None of those adjectives describe this book. What it actually is, is the rather bland story of Jocelyn, a smart, supposedly elegant girl(I have to say girl, she doesn't come off as a real woman) who grows up kind of the white sheep in a black sheep...more

Lavender Morning is the first in a series of three books set in the fictional town of Edilean, Virginia. As usual, Deveraux creates a realistic world with distinctive characters who help each other out and get in each other’s way. Our heroine, Jocelyn, is detached from the world before she arrives in Edilean to claim the house she’s inherited from an elderly friend from her childhood. The story gets off to a choppy start, though, because the prologue introduces characters that have little role...more

I loved this book and hated the ending. I decided to listen to the unabridged version on CD since I was super busy this week and I really got into the story line. It was distracting that the reader did not have much voice inflection change between characters so it was somewhat difficult to tell who was talking during the dialogue. I loved that there were 2 romantic interests in the book and it wasn't immediately obvious which one Joss would choose. I absolutely LOVED the secondary story of Eddie...more

Don't get put off by the slightly boring title or cover. This book is fun, poignant, and wonderful.

Joce is practically raised by lonely old Miss Edi in Florida and is left everything, including a house in a town Edi never mentioned. Turns out this town is Edilean and Miss Edi is the last of the family that founded it.

Edilean is a proud, small, quirky, historical town where everyone knows everything and news travels faster than light. Two residents are Ramsey and Luke, the super hot lawyer and ga...more

This was the first book in Deveraux's new Edilean series, and I am looking forward to reading the next one!
Romance type books are not usually my first pick, but this one contained enough of a mystery that it continued to hold my interest, and I didn't feel that the romance was too over the top.
Jocelyn didn't fit in with her family; her father, stepmother or 'wicked' stepsisters. Her mother had died when she was very young. An older neighbor named Edilean took Jocelyn under her wing and became m...more

As a young girl, Jocelyn Minton lives between two worlds. Her mother had attended private schools but yet she married the handyman. After her mother died, Joce lived with her father, step-mother and two beautiful step-sisters. Sounds a bit like Cinderella but that is where the stories become different.

The neighbor, Miss Eli, became Joce's best friend and showed her many of the good things in life. A strong bond was formed between them and Joce felt she knew everything about Miss Eli. When she d...more

I needed to take a break from my nerdy reads and found this one at just the right time. I've never read any of Jude Deveraux books, but I'm familiar with the genre she's in. After reading this one, I'm intrigued and will probably read the other books in her Edilean series.

In this story, Jocelyn has just lost her oldest and dearest friend, Edilean Harcourt. Miss Edi ends up leaving Jocelyn everything including an 18th century manor tucked in the backwoods of Virginia, a town called Edilean. Jocel...more

Jude Deveraux is a new find for me and a delightful addition to my growing list of favourite authors. She can write!

This book is the first in a series. It is the story of a modern day woman called Jocelyn whose elgant mother died when she was small leaving the child in the care of a loving, but clueless father his second trashy wife and the "steps". Twin girls who grow to become super models. The family thinks of a monster truck rally as high society. All except for Jocelyn. When she is befriende...more

I keep reading jude deveraux because I'm hoping that her passion for writing will come back. Legend, Black Lyon, Knight in Shinning Armor, even Twin of Ice/Fire--the passion and excitement made you never want to put the book down. Over the past few years--I've just been unimpressed. This book--sigh...was just "eh." **next bit contains possible spoilers***The best part of the book was the back story of Miss Edi and David. And even that was sub-par to her earlier love story writing skills. The sto...more

This is the first book in the Edilean series and it sets the stage for characters and stories that follow. I've read several of the books in this series, but I must say that I enjoyed this book most of all. The main character, Jocelyn, grew up in a family where she felt totally out of place. That is, until an older neighbor, Miss Edi, took her under her wing and brought the lonely girl out of her shell and showed her the world. The bond between Miss Edi and Jocelyn grew and when Miss Edi died, s...more

I enjoyed the mystery that surrounded the story line plot and that the author took us back to letters that the mysterious character miss Edi had written (I enjoyed the wartime stories). However, I still do not understand why the crazy headgames were played between all the characters, especially Ramsey and Luke. I also guessed the last final twist of the story way before the author revealed it at the end of the book.

There were too many characters and I sometimes became confused between who the au...more

Jocelyn's mother and father were from two different worlds. When her mother died, her father re-married to a woman who shares his world and Jocelyn feels left out. She meets Miss Edi, who fills the void and introduces her to the finer things in life. When Miss Edi died, she leaves her home in North Carolina to Jocelyn, with a letter telling her that when she meets the love of her life she'll know it. In North Carolina, Jocelyn meets two different men: one of them is an attorney, the other works...more

The first of the Edilean series is very enjoyable. Jocelyn moves to a small town of Edilean after inheriting a large historical house from her beloved friend and mentor, Miss Edi. Not knowing why she inherited a house in a town she has never heard of. Through the course of the book, Jocelyn uncovers some of Miss Edi’s secret family history and falls in love in the process of making Edilean her new home.

This book contains romance, mystery and historical information all in one. Although I read the...more

A cute story. Jocelyn inherits a stately historic home in Virginia from an older woman she was close to in her Florida neighborhood. After the surprise wears off, she heads off to her new hometown where everyone is related and everyone know each other’s business. Jocelyn is taken with the affections of two competing cousins Ramsey and Luke. Behind the inheritance there is a story that goes back to WWII and Jocelyn discovers many things about her friend Miss Eddi that surprises her! It’s hard to...more

Born to a blue collar father and upper crust mother, Jocelyn Minton is a duck out of water, especially after her mom and her parents die and her father reverts and remarries, saddling her with obnoxious twin step-sisters. Her savior, turns out to be elderly neighbor Miss Edilene Harcourt of Edilene, VA. who teaches her about the finer things in life. When Miss Edi dies, Jocelyn is amazed to learn she has inherited Edilean Manor and the town - a delightful small town where everyone knows everyone...more

Just finished this. Well, I tried. I started skipping pages within 30. The main plot, that of a kind of super-hero in colonial America, wasn't too bad. But I really HATED the main characters. The female character is a flake, and the male has identity and self-esteem issues. Really, the boy is gone for 4 years and comes back fat and effeminate, and no one questions this? If my son was gone for 4 years and came back so different in character, I'd have to sit him down and ask him what happened. And...more

This the first one in the Edilean series and I am very excited to read the rest of the series. As a young girl, Jocelyn Minton befriends an older neighbor, Miss Edi, because she has more in common with her than her biological father and obnoxious twin step sisters. After Miss Edi dies, Joce finds herself inheriting Miss Edi's fortune- a house in Edilean and loads of money. But when she arrives in Edilean, she discovers there is no money, but there is a whole town of endearing and aggravating peo...more

I'm one of those readers, when I see a cover I like I will usually read the book. This book was such a choice. The other draw, never before read a Jude Deveraux book. Getting to know the characters was not hard. The story line was interesting. There were times I had trouble following the conversation. After a few lines there was no indication who was speaking and I needed to go back to follow the line again. I liked the twists and turns. To understand the whole story one must finish to the end....more

Gave up after about 70 pages. This just isn't my favorite type of book. That's not to say it wasn't well written and perhaps I'm just not in the mood for this.

Too fluffy, too predictable, I actually skipped to the last page and confirmed my predictions. Then, quickly returned it to the library because there are tons of people waiting to read it.

I've never read Deveraux before. She obviously has a big following and is very prolific. It might just be me.

I'm not totally crossing this author off...more

“Miss Edi: My brother Bertrand is the laziest person in the world.
David: Oh yeah? And how lazy is that?
Miss Edi: When he was three and saw all his gifts under the Christmas tree, he said, 'Who's going to open them for me?'
David: I've heard worse.
Miss Edi: When he was six, my father bought him a bicycle and took him out to teach him to ride it.
David: And?
Miss Edi: Bertrand did very well. My father ran along behind him, holding on, and my brother balanced perfectly. But when my father let go and the bicycle stopped, Bertrand asked why. When my father said he had to push on the pedals, my brother left it lying there in the street, and he never got on a bicycle again.
David: Not bad, but I've heard worse.
Miss Edi: When he was twelve, my parents took us out to a restaurant, the first one we'd ever been to, and my father ordered steaks for each of us. When my brother's came, he looked at it and asked how he was to eat it. My father showed him how to cut the steak, then how to chew it. My brother called the waiter back and ordered a bowl of mashed potatoes.
David: Okay, that's getting up there, but I have heard a few worse.
Miss Edi: When he was sixteen, my mother arranged for her beloved son to go to a dance with a very nice young girl. He was to pick her up at six pm. At six-thirty Bertrand was sitting in the living room and my father asked him why he hadn't gone on his date. My brother said, 'Because she hasn't come to get me yet.”
