When Montse and Santiago were just teenagers, they met…fell in love and Montse became pregnant. Many years later, Montse a doctor is treating a patient when she discovers that Santiago, the man who she believed had died was far from dead. In fact he was very much alive. Montse has still held a spark for Santiago, even after he left her. She decides to embark on a trip to locate Santiago.

I thought this was an alright book. The love story that was portrayed between Montse and Santiago,...more

This is one of the best books that I have read outside of the classroom.

The basic plot is that a doctor finds a photograph of her long lost lover among the personal items of a patient. The picture is dated 1976, even though she has been told that he died in the Sahara in 1975. Since her personal life is in shambles, she decides she has nothing to lose by going to North Africa to look for him.

The novel's structure does not follow the events in chronological order, but rat...more

The fragments of this novel switch between Barcelona and the Sahara, between the present and the past. The story is told from the perspectives of two people who fell in love during Franco's final days, when Spain still occupied the Sahara, and shared a brief moment of their lives together. I am getting a little tired of novels that are not chronological, that jump back and forth forcing the reader to arrange the pieces of the puzzle. (Maybe it's not overdone, maybe I've just read too many of the...more

This book was somehow different from books I ussually read. It was about everlasting, but unhappy love. There were many circumstances, that stood between the two young lovers, so they were allowed to spend only one short summer together and then the whole rest of life separately. A big attention is payed to the description of West Sahara - history, political background etc.
It's not an easy book to read, but it gives much to think about.

Winner of the Premio Alfaguara 2007. I really liked the way it moved between the two protagonists and different times in their lives. A great unexpected twist at the end that moves it beyond romance. I learned something new about Spanish imperialism as well: Spanish Sahara from 1884-1975.

So well written...and I'm always looking for good, smart books about women and how women think about things. This one goes in that category, as well as being a good adventure story

I REALLY wish this book was in English so that I could recommend it to more people! It's told partly in the 70s and partly in the present day. A couple is split in the 70s, and the woman goes searching for the man thirty years later in Northern Africa. The way that they find each other, and what happens when they meet is something that really surprised me, and I thought I'd read all of the possible old-flames-meet scenarios!

Mira Si Yo Te Querre/ See How Much I Love You

A love story of sorts set in two time periods against a backdrop of one of the Spanish colonial wars in Morocco. A 40 year old doctor from Barcelona chances upon an old photograph and travels to the Sahara in search of her first love. While not and extraordinary book it's a well written story with interesting characters.

I read it for my book club. It tells a very interesting story in a very unusual setting. It sparked my curiosity and I started reading about Spain's last colony in Africa. Some of the situations related in the book like the refugee crisis are still going on today.

I still don't know whether this was a bad transaltion or badly written but it's a bit of a mess though it's heart is in the right place.
