We are homeschoolers that use many ideas from the Charlotte Mason style of teaching. This book was my daughter's assigned reading for literature during 2nd grade. She is a bit behind in her reading skills, so this would probably be more 1st grade reading level for most Charlotte Mason homeschoolers. She would read for 15 minutes each day and then narrate orally to me what she had read about. It took her about three weeks to complete this book.

This is an outstanding collection of eight of James Herriot's true stories about his life as a veterinarian in 1940's Yorkshire, adapted for children and beautifully illustrated. Adults who enjoy Herriot's memoirs (begun in All Creatures Great and Small) will love introducing their children to his life through this wonderful collection. The book stands well on its own, however, with a slightly higher reading level than most books of this genre. The stories really capture country life during t...more
Ryan received this for Christmas and I think it may be his favorite gift. We have read all of the stories several times already and he is completely enamored of the book. There are 8 long-ish (for a 4 y.o.) stories in the treasury. As the subtitle promises, the stories are warm and joyful, with wonderful illustrations and gentle, descriptive language. A great collection for an animal-loving kid.
4.5 stars. The kids and I listened to this on tape, narrated by Jim Dale who did a fabulous job. We enjoyed all these sweet tales of farm animals. I remember especially loving the story of Moses the Kitten when I was a child. I could picture the illustrations of the book that I read when I was young as we listened. It also reminded me how much I love cats. Beautiful stories!
This is a charming picture book. I bought this for Rebecca for Christmas but chickened out of giving it to her because of the lack of glitter and stickers. However, she found it on the shelf, and loves it. Last night she read all the stories and then requested that I read one to her before bed tonight. She loves that these stories are real. I enjoy these stories, too.
I'm not exactly an animal person, but these stories are great anyway. My kids most loved the story about the kitten found in the snow on Christmas Day. They are all really sweet true stories from James Herriot, a country vet. I read and enjoyed his All Creatures Great and Small series many years ago and was glad to find this introduction to him to share with my kids.
I checked this book out from the library about a year ago and returned it without reading it. About a month ago we got the audiobook from the library (read my Jim Dale) and IT IS SO GOOD. Lia wants to listen to them over and over again. The story about Debbie the little tabby cat got me all teary eyed. I'm not even an animal story sort of person!
This is a very nice book. The writing style is very similar to Herriot's adult books and not dumbed down for kids. That makes it a little hard for very small ones to follow, but there are illustrations on every page which help explain the story.
This is a book almost anyone can enjoy.

Clara and Ian both really enjoyed this read-aloud, even though it's above their reading levels. I loved the questions it prompted...everything from vocabulary to comprehension questions. The illustrations are fabulous. Obvious why it's on Sonlight's read-aloud list!
This collection has proven a favorite with both my youngest (6) and myself. Beautifully illustrated and lovingly told, we've read most of these more than once now and I never roll my eyes when he asks to read another one of these "one more time."
James Herriot in picture book format? Yes, please! This is a collection of all of Herriot's children's books, and it's great.
The first book is a little too word heavy for a picture book, but he learns his lesson quickly and book 2 is better.
The last book is written from the perspective of a lost lamb, detailing the lamb's adventures. It was my least favorite because it deviated from what Herriot is genius at: a vet telling his stories with love, compassion, and hum...more

I highly recommend this book. Gianna wants me to read it to her over and over again. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful. Your kids will love this book.
Between 4 and 5 stars. My 5-year-old thoroughly enjoyed every story in this book, and he LOVED the illustrations. Beautiful artwork and tender stories about animals.
I have always loved his stories, and this version has beautiful illustrations. Hannah particularly loved the story about the dog who only barked once in his whole life.
We just finished this today. The kids and I really enjoyed it. The stories are well-written and entertaining. And of course, they were all about animals which they loved.
Some of the stories were a little sad, all had a happy ending though. We laughed really loud with some and got teary-eyed with others.

This book is one of my favorites to read with Joseph. The pictures are beautiful and the stories are so endearing. I just love this book!
This book is practically perfect. The illustrations transport me and my children into the English countryside. I love this so much.
You must own this book if you read to your children. A good book for the years when children are transitioning from picture books to "chapter books." The water color art is fabulous and the stories will make you cry. "Bonnie's Big Day" is my favorite.
We'll need to check this one out again. Enjoyable true stories of animals. Lovely illustrations by Ruth Brown and Peter Barrett.
Simple, heartwarming stories that breath reality and are brought to life with beautiful, fullpage color illustrations.
Beautiful illustrations and interesting stories. My kids enjoyed each one and hope that we read more by James Herriot.
This was my first James Herriot book and it got me hooked at a very young age. Love it. All kids should read it.
Cute short stories that are very appropriate for children. Read by Jim Dale these animal stories come to life.
Just the sort of thing you hope will imprint on the memory screen of a young child; fresh, clear, pure, and good.
A collection of short stories with beautiful illustrations designed for children. A wonderful book.
So much fun! Jim Dale (Harry Potter narrator) reads the audio. It was a blissful two hours of listening.
Wonderful animal stories with charming illustrations. Any animal lovers will enjoy these stories.
Absolutely love this treasury... I think I cry at every story, everytime I read!
I read this book but it did not have the same cover.
What great describing book!
What great describing book!
I love James Herriot's writing. I once started reading a biography about him that stated the that his stories are embellished. I quit at once as I prefer to be spellbound by the stories.
