When it was good, it was very, very good, and when it was bad.... Well, let's just say reading the line, "You look like a nigger," made me really glad I'd weeded this from my media center. And what was up with the illustration of that little girl sitting at the feet of the naked Greek god? Maybe that was okay a hundred years ago, but let's face it, the gods better get themselves some fig leaves these days.

This story was first published by E. Nesbit in 1907 and the vocabulary and style of the story seemed dated. As a result, I think that most children would not enjoy it. The tale contains many interwoven elements of traditional fantasy, including the start of the enchanted Princess story (e.g. the Princess is asleep and must be awoken with a kiss from her Prince), that ends up having a twist in that the Princess is not really a Princess and is actually the housekeeper's niece playing a trick on th...more

This is by Edith Nesbit. Love her!! She wrote a series-- we read the first one aloud "5 Children and It" and then listened to the next two in the series (The Phoenix and the Carpet and another . . . i can't recall the name) and now we are hooked on her books. I don't think the children could read these alone. They are "classic" books and have difficult language, and sometimes take a bit of explaining of British customs and words. She does a great job of mixing things children...more

Why don't more people know about E. Nesbit? (Kids these days! cries the 23-year-old.) Her fantasies are rich and original, with an undercurrent of creepy that keeps me coming back even as a (semi-)adult(ish-type-person). The sequence with the statues in this book is especially shiver-worthy if you've read Nesbit's short horror story, "Man-Size in Marble," which I highly recommend. (It's in the Edward Gorey-edited...more

This book was great at times, and quite slow at others. We had to stop and explain what was going on quite often. Toward the end, I just ended up reading the last couple of chapters and telling her what happened, because the story had lost some of its appeal . .. we had been reading it for so long. I like the individual books to be compelling! I think it would be better to read with an older child (10 or so . . . it was just hard for her to understand what was going on at times.)

recommends it for:
anyone who loves innocent fantasy in all its beauty and aesthetics
Although thrillers are my favourite genre i am a sucker for fantasy...
Beautifully innocent and wonderfully potrayed...author brings to life all the fantasies we would have dreamt of experiencing as kids n trust me that this is not kids read...When the description says 6 and above it really meant 'AND ABOVE'... anyone can read it...
Its jus how one decides to interprete and imagine the story and i thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it...

Like her other books, a very sweet tale for kids. I wish my parents had introduced us to these when we were younger, I think we'd have LOVED them. This one reminded me a lot of Five Children and It in that you need to be careful what you wish for.
A charming book, and even though I'd guessed the ending at a very early stage, I still hugely enjoyed it.

E. Nesbit is one of the greatest authors of all time. You might not think so, but if you could only see the chain of minds that lead directly from children like me who read her books and grew up to be grown ups that believe in the power of both magic, and common sense, it would be a golden chain of the greatest stories of magic for the last 100 years.

Great read-aloud for parent and children 8+. Language is wonderful, though difficult and will require frequent explanations. I would probably not read this to my class - better with a small group of children whose interest would not wander with the constant stops to explain the language and situations (turn of the century England). A very fun book!

I love E. Nesbit! I love the way her books involve magic creeping into the real world and how 'magic' seems to have a personality of it's own. Just the kind of thing that set me wishing on rings, pennies and whatnot just to see if magic really did exist! Sometimes I still hope. :)

We listened to the Recorded Books CD version (unabridged) of this in the car with the kids. Virginia Leischman is fantastic - she brought this delightful tale to life and all the kids (ages 5-11) loved it. I'm looking for more audiobooks she has narrated...

The style is charming. I love E. Nesbit books.
It was good, but doesn't yet hold the same place in my heart as The Last of the Dragons and Some Others.

Audio re-read of a children's fantasy classic, read in print many times before. Virginia Leishman did a fine job narrating.

I cannot say enough how indebted I feel authors like J.K. Rowling are to an author like Edith Nesbit.
